When I was a freshman in high school playing oblivion for the first time when you walk out of the sewer and see the world was that moment that gamers can understand my jaw dropped
As amazing as Skyrim was when you walk out into the open for the first time, Oblivion was GROUNDBREAKING. It was the first game where the whole "holy shit, you can actually go to the tippy tops of those mountains in the distance" moment happened for an open-world game. I know it's not the first open-world game ever obviously, but it was the first-one that really was a giant leap forward into the future.
I caught vampirism in the sewers on my very first playthrough and turned when I slept on the Bloated Float. Had no idea why the NPC's weren't too friendly with me. It was a tough first start to that game.
And now as you approach retirement, you have more re releases to look forward to instead of a new entry. Perhaps your grandkids will live long enough to play the next elder scrolls game.
This was after spending 30 minutes playing with the physics engine with all the objects laying around, where you could pick up and manipulate anything. So freaking cool for the time, especially after Half-Life 2 made all that standard.
I’d play the shit out of a remake of oblivion. My little brother and I played that game a TON when it was released. He’s no longer here so I’d have to play it alone and finally beat oblivion for the both of us.
Heyy, person that works that GameStop here. I work at a store in KY, where we have 2 stores in our city and both stores sales are great. I think the biggest thing here is that people are weary about getting the digital consoles here, and so we still get tons of game sales every single day. But that could be an indication of where we are located. People like to stick to their old ways here.😂
I feel like GTA 6 will be huge for GameStop, lots of people are waiting for it saving their money both for the console and the game its going to be absolutely crazy.
GS Manager here: in my area area we still haven’t been told if any specific store are closing, but we we told the company had a set profit goal for a store (it’s the same for every store and I’m not going to say the amount here), and essentially if you don’t hit that profit goal for your store or close to it there’s a high chance of closure. So, with December ending most managers have a good idea of if there store(s) will be closing or not. I think it’s a good thing, because in theory what should be left should be the stores that are actually making money, meaning GS will be more profitable. And a lot of stores are actually seeing very good profit increases right now too with the shift towards trading cards. It’s not ideal, but you need something else that makes money if people aren’t buying as many physical games. I manager 2 stores right now that it’s been great for and I know those stores are for sure not closing.
great to hear the shift to PSA trading cards is bringing in more revenue! I think GS wants to takeover the trading card market and expose their however many million pro reward members to it as well which would likely help the overall trading card market go up overtime which would increase the popularity even more around cards. They need a market and video games/NFTs were not doing it, but these trading cards may be the game changer

Probably not lol. Have you ever played oblivion on Xbox series x with which is enhanced to 4k auto hdr fps boost. The draw distance is insane. You know how rockstar rereleased rdr1 for ps4 and pc? They didn’t release it on Xbox series x, wanna know why? Because the base Xbox version is already enhanced for it. So you’re just thinking negatively to think negatively as if Bethesda which is owned by Microsoft would rerelease something they already did on Xbox, this means it wouldn’t be a remaster but a remake as the game is already remastered on Xbox technically.
As an ex GameStop employee (who actually had a somewhat good time working there), one of the main problems I feel is the amount of people in corporate who don’t.. seem to even like video games. They always seemed out of touch.
I worked there for 5 years back in 2015, the company was being ran by ceos who joined in after the president retired, then those ceos make the pro elite card and did a cash grab then left, then lower corporate ran us for a bit and they had no business experience, so they would pass it to the next fit person who did another cash grab lol and make store regional managers to attack their employees and accuse them of random stuff to get rid of them, after that I have no clue what happened lol

All I've gotta say is fuck digital media, physical cant be yanked away from you at any point just cause someone says they don't want you to have the license anymore, the only thing you need to worry about physical is keeping the physical thing safe, digital is bs and they hike the price even more when there's no physical production & distribution charges if anything it should be cheaper digitally and it's closing the doors on a big chunk of gamestop which like it or not it was pretty nice having a dedicated game store that wasn't small time and would close at the drop of a hat im just an old head who likes holding my games/media in my hands not just a digital thing and I think people who prefer digital are getting ripped off and it bugs me on both fronts
Not to mention the resaleability. Can't sell digital downloads second hand once you've finished the campaign. Or pick up games that you skipped a few years back that are outdated and worth next to nothing now. Blizzard store on PC for example, still want full RRP for near decade old games because they have a stranglehold on the market, I.e. you can't buy disks for pc anymore and until recently, their games were only available through their own online store

I grew up playing PS1 and PS2 and i had hundreds of CD's and DVD's. But after more than a decade or two, not a single one works anymore. They all got either scratched, or ruined by humidity, or started degrading and flaking, some of them even got moldy and green, some discs got stuck together, some of them just stopped working for no reason even if they look fine, maybe due to overplaying.. Some discs work fine until you reach a point where the game is stuck because some part is corrupted. And i used to take care of them, they were kept either in original boxes or zipped cases or stacked cases. But time and humidity does it's thing. In summer it gets over 70% humidity here in my area, i'm not gonna run a 400w dehumidifier in a separate room just to keep my discs safe. Also they took too much space in the house, if i placed all the discs on top of each other they would be the size of a fridge. I'm happy for digital copies, i don't have to worry about any of that. You only need to take care of your account. Also, if the disc reader gets broken you can't play any of physical copies. And i never had a digital game stripped away from me, the only game i know that got revoked was Silent Hills P.T, but as far as i know those who downloaded it on time still have the game.

Thank you, that segment pissed me off as well. They have nearly $5 Billion in cash reserves and were profitable for 2 quarters in a row now with the latest quarter being $17 Million Net Profit. So true. Love me from Skyrim, but I had realized on my first playthrough there were things missing. Not being able to create your own spells, like a gigantic, super weak fireball that would just agro a whole town, is a pretty big downgrade imo. So much fun could be had with oblivion's magic system alone.
It felt weird in Skyrim when you would talk to an NPC and it didn't zoom in as close as Oblivion during conversations. As much as I didn't really care for the Oblivion gates, it is still my favorite. Did Skyrim even have the speechcraft wheel thing? I have not played it in a decade and don't remember.
As someone who’s first elder scrolls game was Skyrim… I tried playing oblivion after and I couldn’t get into it because it was showing its age. I would LOVE a remake
If Oblivion remake comes out, watch Bethesda order a cease and desist on Skyblivion since it could steal players away. Then again maybe not since they're not Nintendo but I wouldn't be surprised since if Skyblivion didn't exist, players would be forced to buy the official remake even if it was awful.
I don't think Bethesda would do it. They're not as anti-consumer as everyone says they are. Their bosses, however, I could see doing it. Though they usually aren't too bad to consumers, either. I think both companies mean well for their consumers, they are just so out of touch.

Skyrim remasters should have stopped 30 remasters ago. Fallout story was awful. Horse armour was the start of the slide, and all the bugs, in EVERY game they ever released...
Morrowind was the absolute best story and best “loot based” Elder Scrolls game I’ve ever played. I got it from my buddy a few years after it came out and I played at least a half dozen, full playthroughs.i played it for at least 5-10 years, even after Xbox 360 came out. Being the Nerevarine was the best story of all of the “recent” Elder Scrolls releases. I remember reading the books (non skill books, just to understand the lore and the history. Imo, Vibec was the coolest town in any ES games. It had mark, recall and the index’s to travel easily to where you’d recently been. The Dwemer played a huge role in the game. It’s my favorite game of all time and that is saying ALOT!

Oblivion was the first game of it's kind that i ever played, and really opened me up to trying other games like it. I'd personally be happy with a remake of the game, because to this day I can go back to the original when there are more modern games that I'm not nearly as interested in

Gamestop truely screwed themselves over by only pushing preorder sales and subscriptions for the longest time and doing the worst trade in prices. They destroyed there reputation.
I don't want an all digital future. When I bought Indiana Jones for the Xbox last week, only half the game was on the disc and the rest i got to download. This wasn't the case a few years back! (for rdr2, rockstar provided 2 discs why can't Microsoft do the same!). Edit: I WANT TO OWN MY GAMES!
That has me wondering, how this new game will be released on a different platform. I don't own an Xbox Series X , nor plan to any time soon. When I heard that the game will be brought to the PS5, I am hyped. But now wondering: will it be physical or digital only?

Physical copies are like one of the chief attractions of still gaming on a console vs a PC. Very surprising that MS and even Sony are being dumb enough and helping to bring about the demise of Phyisical game copies!

I think one of my favorite parts of Gameranx’s development as a channel is that they have become more openly critical of the different practices of gaming companies. Specifically Nintendo and their suing everyone for everything.

I really want an Oblivion remake/remaster. This is my favorite Elder Scrolls game of all time and I am in complete agreement with you Jake on this. I actually love Oblivion way more than Skyrim and I will play it the rest of my life. 😊🎮
@justme87999 imo it's greedy when they've shown no support or acknowledgement to a small group of dedicated people that have been working on this for years just to release their own version they have more resources to make the same year riding on the hype skyblivion has obtained only to likely charge us 70 dollars and put creation club in it so they can charge us 10 more dollars for more horse armor mods.
The one time I've had a gaming console stolen was in college with my 360, and I'm still mainly salty that I lost my Oblivion save with who knows how many hours put into it. 😔
I work at a Gamestop and we're consistently busy for the most part. But, a lot of that is due to the 2 closest stores not being the greatest. We get calls all the time complaining about the other 2 stores. We're also one of the "retro" stores that can actually sell older games, which is great and all, but we constantly get shipments from other stores that can take retro games for trade and can't sell. So, they send it to stores like the one I work at. We have more drawers dedicated to Xbox 360 games than other platform we have games for. It's getting a bit much at this point haha
Used to work at GameStop Canada until recently. I belive they've closed a significant number of Canadian stores as well. Most of the corporate management have a "we're too big to fail" mentality. The overall marketing strategy seems to be to try selling different products (funko pops, manga, apparel etc) to the same audience, instead of focusing on core business. Only about 20% of floor space is allocated for gaming. In my experience it has been hurting business significantly. Long term regular customers stopped coming once the focus shifted away from gaming, and the expanded catalog of collectibles didn't bring in new customers. According to a regional manager, corporate also don't belive that social media is a viable platform to connect with potential customers, which is absolutely baffling. They rely solely on potential customers walking in the door in order to make a sale.
🤦i feel for everyone working in retail, especially with GameStop. But not utilizing social media? They are out of touch with their customers. That is the best way to advertise (holiday sale! Buy 2 get 1 free!) something, anything would be great The loss of stores. Ouch 🤕 with how many titles available. And sigh, it is a bummer how separate games have become from GameStop altogether. It feels so out of place, but it also effects so much more tenfold. Which the heads of the company would wake up, and realize what customers actually want. GameStop to be about games again
Yeah I'm not at all surprised to see them closing stores. Tried to stop by my local GameStop (hadn't been in years) to grab a copy of Metaphor ReFantazio about a week after it dropped, didn't even question that they might not have it. ........guy at the counter told me in so many words "yeah if you don't preorder it we won't order it, that's how it is with all new releases now". ..I drove across the street to Target and they had a plethora of copies. Like, why would they not even *try* to stock extra copies of the newest games? Clearly there was no supply shortage lol, I was truly baffled.

I guess in another 5 to 10 years, physical game media will be a thing of the past. Digital downloads and game publishers have been chipping away at retailers for years now. Most disks serve only to provide the access key to the download these days, and I don't think a single game is published on disk for PC anymore. It's a shame as most of my early gaming experiences were thanks to the second-hand market, which is no longer possible with digital downloads.
@@green_beard_87 that's simply not true (yet) that most discs are just an access code. Every single PS5 game I own is perfectly playable from the disc with no internet required.
I was an assistant manager at a GameStop up until the start of 2020 when I left to pursue better opportunities. The manager there is one of my best friends to this day, and I have tried many times convincing him to walk away and get paid what he's worth but he's good at what he does and he loves doing it. It makes me sad every time they announce the company is failing because I worry about him. His store is thriving, but the stress of the company overall weighs on him heavily.

The engine the mod is being developed on is the same out of date game engine that was responsible for Fallout 4 and an even lesser version of the same game engine Bethesda used to make Starfield. The same game engine that everyone in the gaming world has been pointing too since Fallout 4 launched in 2015 and calling it dated, because it is. This is the entire issue with this mod, because if Skyrim never released in 2011 and instead released in 2024, it wouldn't have even sold 5m copies and it wouldn't be anywhere near the top of any lists. It would probably be in a similar situation to what Starfield is at now. This is the problem with this mod, it's 10 years too late 😂..
Just don’t pull a Skyrim and strip out 90% of the depth. I never actually realize how bad it was until I recently did a vanilla playthrough. How and why Skyrim can be labeled as an “RPG” is beyond me
@@bronzin1445 You're the dragonborn.. it's an action roleplay at best. You can do things that just feel counter productive to the forced narrative. Nothing feels natural in Skyrim. It got way too much praise. And then they too k it even further the wrong direction with Fallout 4 but that got gobbled up by casuals too. I'm pretty sure Bethesda are done for me.
@@thenunbus It’s not a bad game by any means. Hell, I have over 300 hours on Skyrim alone but there’s a reason why I have nearly 2000 hours on Oblivion. I might be looking too deep into it but but as far as I’m concerned, a Mage shouldn’t be nearly as skilled as a Barbarian when it comes to wielding a battle axe; assuming they even possess the ability to even do so
@@thenunbus What? You mean being the ultimate Savior of mankind doesn't align with also being a Thief? Oblivion to me was a far better game in terms of story. If they fixed up the visuals, controller support etc I'd go back and replay that. I spent countless hours even in 2024 MODDING Oblivion for fun but I just couldn't get back into it.
Fromsoft games are by *far* my favorite games to put this into context. I would rather Fromsoft be fully self reliant but if any big corporation were to ever control them I would feel safest if Sony were the ones with the keys. I understand that many would disagree because of how they are handling the Bloodborne IP (my favorite game of all time), I think they showed their love and respect towards the series by how they handled the Demon’s Souls remake. Besides, having more ownership over Fromsoft might incentivize Sony to do something with the Bloodborne IP bc as of right now I feel they are saving it the same way all gamers save their potions and never use them throughout the game 😊
Absolutely no one outside of Sony, and probably not even most people at Sony, know how they're handling the Bloodborne IP. Demon's Souls lay dormant for about 10 years before work was started on a remake. My money is on a BB remaster being a launch title for PS6, if Sony are smart. The original is still a console seller to this day. I have friends that were strictly PC who still bought a PS4 to play it.
@@jsullivan2112 I’m glad you agree, and I think that’s exactly what Sony will do. They will wait for the launch of their next console which tbf isn’t that far out of sight. But the bright side is they will remake it most likely with the highest quality they can as they’ve done with the rest of their IPs. Love or hate the games, they do make them high quality. And I would rather wait as long as I need for someone to do Bloodborne justice rather than rush something out. Imagine if Microsoft bought out Fromsoft…

If Microsoft bought From we might actually get proper PC ports lol, I gotta be honest. Or at least PC and Xbox owners could still play them. I'm concerned now that future games will be Sony exclusives. That's only a minor inconvenience right now because I wanted to sell my PS5, but down the road it seems like I'm tied to Playstation whether I like it or not.
My friend was a manager at Gamestop and they screwed him over. They told him he was getting paid too much so they slashed his pay in half and took away his overtime. It happened to the other managers in the region too so they all left out. Thankfully my friend got a job at Huntington and worked his way up to another manager's position.

I worked at Gamestop for around 7 years back in the late 00s and up to 2014. I spent the last two years at a store manager. Gamestop's problem now, as it was back then, is the same problem with every single corporate business - pushing shareholder profits over the welfare of employees and the desires of the customers. I had to work through hurricanes. I had to work on national holidays where the store made $125 for an 8-hour period. Gamestop tried to essentially turn the store into a microtransaction paradise - Apple-produce repairs; magazine subscriptions; cell phone plans... I hated nothing more than answering the phone and spending 30 seconds trying to recite the 13 offerings that corporate wanted us to push down customers' throats before we even allowed them to ask us if we had that particular used $2 PS3 game that they wanted to buy... if I'm not painting the picture clearly enough, the problem with Gamestop corporate is the same as Hollywood corporate: complete disconnect from what people actually want. And that's why their stocks have gone in the toilet the past decade. A complete disconnect from what customers want to shop for. And all the "diamond hands" morons buying up the meme stock? Those fuzzy memories they have of their favorite store memories are from a time that hasn't existed in well over a decade.
Here is something that gaming journalists should learn about games. Now I don't know if this is the case with STALKER 2 but a lot of games are binarized in a way that makes it impossible to make tiny changes in their worlds. Like, you want to change the location of a tiny rock? Deal, you just have to rebinarize the entire game again and ship it as a patch. Code changes are different, they usually result in tiny patches. That's how some companies make small patches when doing world fixes. The game loads the world and a hard coded script tells the engine to move the rock to a new place, before it's ever visualized.
Sony owning anything is a big L for gamers imo except the sony fanboys ofc.. as a pc gamer i don't want Sony to own anything lol mainly cuz they will take years to port a game when they do port it it will be a garbage port this is why i guess its the end of souls games for most gamers except PlayStation players

If you run a UA-cam channel, in order to get more Eyes on the content you need burner accounts. Multiple ones that comment and like your videos to get it out there helps the algorithm. People do it on Twitter all the time
A remaster of Oblivion would be absolutely stupid of them to do.. considering mods can make Oblivion way better than any remaster... A remake however would be phenomenal
I always appreciate that jake re-films the sponsors. They'll use the same one for a while but most media will recycle old film or worse. Man I've been watching these guys since high school.
Sadly people are dumb for buying digital games . Once they own the digital market they will have ultimate control of the prices and will do what ever they want . Thinking you will keep getting cheap games once they control the market . Good luck !
It’s been confirmed as of or three days ago. They aren’t sure if it’s remake or remaster as far as the news goes. The question posed was if they were going to release a cease and desist on skyblivion mods.
Can't believe Skyblivion was announced 12 years ago already, I keep forgetting about it for years. Can't believe we might get an official remake before the mod.
I’ll always support my GameStop I always buy physical games, especially with all these big companies saying buying digital my isnt owning the game why would I buy it then when I could physically hold onto it for ever and pass it on
I hope the oblivion remake at least fixes the broken level scaling and isn't just a lazy remaster. I would also personally appreciate a bit of a combat update. Otherwise, much more excited for the oblivion mod.
As someone who has played Oblivion and the DLCs for it, I don't know if I'll get it if they're doing a Master Chief collection type of remaster. I'd prefer an actual remake where they overhaul some of the systems such as magic and archery, but more than likely it'll be a reskin with some slightly better lighting. Some people who have only played Skyrim would be disappointed to find out you can't cast with both hands and archery being useless. Even sneaking was an abomination when guards would teleport to you when lockpicking a house.
We still have a few local GameStops here in Portland, OR. I do go buy games there when I want a physical disc, which is fairly often. And we also have a few small independent shops that sell older games, consoles and peripherals, and those are really cool. (Shout out to Flip Flop Games on N. Lombard!) I know the clock is ticking, but I’m enjoying it while I can.
I think the Switch dock having fan vents is probably for when you’re playing it for longer than a couple hours, since it’s plugged in, not that the dock gives it more power. The Steam Deck as an example, I use a third party dock to play on the tv, and whenever I play it docked it can get pretty hot after a couple hours. I also don’t think it’d make sense to make it “better” with the dock when the whole point of the Switch is that its handheld.
I feel like GameStop could possibly survive a bit longer if they kept track of their inventory better on their website. Trying to find a game instock online is nearly impossible. Just now I checked my local store's "In Stock" inventory and it says they only have 12 used PS4 games right now. Wildly inaccurate number and its like that at the other locations in my area. Is it just me? Just my city? It can't be... Right? I would be spending a good bit more there but I'm not calling multiple stores to try to find a specific game. For the past few years I have found small businesses on eBay to have very similar prices, a way larger selection of games and super quick shipping.
I still remember midnight releases at GS the line wrapped around the block especially for the latest COD whenever it would drop in the 2010s. Man how things have changed as time flies.
My local GameStop was closed way back, it made me sad because I really enjoyed hitting the store on release day to pick up a new game. The trade-in system was great too.
What I think would be really cool is a Daggerfall remake. Maybe not with a world map as big as Daggerfall's, but still huge. The social mechanics in the game could be really interesting in a modern game.
I'm glad you mentioned skyblivion. I've been waiting for this for years and it doesn't make any sense for Bethesda to Remake it. The guys behind it took their approval before starting the project. I expected you to mention Exodus and its gameplay since it's the closest thing we could get to a new Mass effect. Maybe next week ?

Hi, this a keyholder, lower management at GameStop, yes, things have been really rough for all of us that work at our location, we did start offering PSA grading for pokemon cards which has surprisingly gone really well, it may help in the long run but as a location in a shopping center and well placed around other stores, it has been pretty slow for us and been used pretty much to save on ps5 consoles for the holidays... Digital editions that dont help our store in the long run at all... Do video games a favor and your wallet a favor too and buy disc editions so that you actually own your games, not only that, but physical will always save you money. I know its coming from an employee, but for real, letting your entire library of games come down to a password that may be hacked in the future should not become the norm. I know im just waiting to see my favorite store close down soon, but at least i can give some advice...
It has been many years since I have played Oblivion, but I remember the MQ and faction quest lines being much better than Skyrim. I made my first mods for Oblivion. I tend to play a stealth character, and stealthing was nearly impossible for Oblivion gates. My solution became "run like hell". I would sneak as far as I could. Once I was discovered I would just sprint, avoiding all combat, until I could find another place to hide. Do that all the way to the gate and then hope so survive whatever abuse awaited me long enough for the gate to close. It seems like a cheat but it was very much in line with what my character would do.
My only issue with this GameStop segment is it talks about a decline in revenue, which sounds bad but not when you mention profits are up. In fact they have trimmed the fat (bad performing stores) and have had their most profitable last 3 quarters in a long time.. I see it as continuing to trim fat, which likely won’t reduce sales. I have 3 stores near me in a pretty tight radius. They could drop one store and likely not reduce store visits.
Often these large file size updates are so big because a single file in a pack of files has to be overwritten, not because they had to add 100gb to the game.
GameStop needs to pivot hard into a more MicroCenter like model. Large central locations with steep enough discounts and tight enough crews to outlast market shifts.
Thanks for mentioning that: I also immediately thought of and actually worried for Skyblivion. Also, if Bethesda had any shred of common sense they would just licence that project and pay the team behind it. On an unrelated note, Game Spot can surely thank tech journalists and PC makers for telling everyone that blueray players are pointless and physical media belong in the past. Try buying a game these days: all you can do is pay for a licence to play and own nothing. Such a great plan!

As amazing as Skyrim was when you walk out into the open for the first time, Oblivion was GROUNDBREAKING. It was the first game where the whole "holy shit, you can actually go to the tippy tops of those mountains in the distance" moment happened for an open-world game. I know it's not the first open-world game ever obviously, but it was the first-one that really was a giant leap forward into the future.
I caught vampirism in the sewers on my very first playthrough and turned when I slept on the Bloated Float. Had no idea why the NPC's weren't too friendly with me. It was a tough first start to that game.
And now as you approach retirement, you have more re releases to look forward to instead of a new entry. Perhaps your grandkids will live long enough to play the next elder scrolls game.
It's only second to Fallout 3 when you exit the vault and the sun blasts you in the eyes the first time.
This was after spending 30 minutes playing with the physics engine with all the objects laying around, where you could pick up and manipulate anything. So freaking cool for the time, especially after Half-Life 2 made all that standard.

Heyy, person that works that GameStop here. I work at a store in KY, where we have 2 stores in our city and both stores sales are great. I think the biggest thing here is that people are weary about getting the digital consoles here, and so we still get tons of game sales every single day. But that could be an indication of where we are located. People like to stick to their old ways here.😂

I feel like GTA 6 will be huge for GameStop, lots of people are waiting for it saving their money both for the console and the game its going to be absolutely crazy.
GS Manager here: in my area area we still haven’t been told if any specific store are closing, but we we told the company had a set profit goal for a store (it’s the same for every store and I’m not going to say the amount here), and essentially if you don’t hit that profit goal for your store or close to it there’s a high chance of closure. So, with December ending most managers have a good idea of if there store(s) will be closing or not. I think it’s a good thing, because in theory what should be left should be the stores that are actually making money, meaning GS will be more profitable. And a lot of stores are actually seeing very good profit increases right now too with the shift towards trading cards. It’s not ideal, but you need something else that makes money if people aren’t buying as many physical games. I manager 2 stores right now that it’s been great for and I know those stores are for sure not closing.
great to hear the shift to PSA trading cards is bringing in more revenue! I think GS wants to takeover the trading card market and expose their however many million pro reward members to it as well which would likely help the overall trading card market go up overtime which would increase the popularity even more around cards. They need a market and video games/NFTs were not doing it, but these trading cards may be the game changer

Probably not lol. Have you ever played oblivion on Xbox series x with which is enhanced to 4k auto hdr fps boost. The draw distance is insane. You know how rockstar rereleased rdr1 for ps4 and pc? They didn’t release it on Xbox series x, wanna know why? Because the base Xbox version is already enhanced for it. So you’re just thinking negatively to think negatively as if Bethesda which is owned by Microsoft would rerelease something they already did on Xbox, this means it wouldn’t be a remaster but a remake as the game is already remastered on Xbox technically.

As an ex GameStop employee (who actually had a somewhat good time working there), one of the main problems I feel is the amount of people in corporate who don’t.. seem to even like video games. They always seemed out of touch.
I worked there for 5 years back in 2015, the company was being ran by ceos who joined in after the president retired, then those ceos make the pro elite card and did a cash grab then left, then lower corporate ran us for a bit and they had no business experience, so they would pass it to the next fit person who did another cash grab lol and make store regional managers to attack their employees and accuse them of random stuff to get rid of them, after that I have no clue what happened lol

All I've gotta say is fuck digital media, physical cant be yanked away from you at any point just cause someone says they don't want you to have the license anymore, the only thing you need to worry about physical is keeping the physical thing safe, digital is bs and they hike the price even more when there's no physical production & distribution charges if anything it should be cheaper digitally and it's closing the doors on a big chunk of gamestop which like it or not it was pretty nice having a dedicated game store that wasn't small time and would close at the drop of a hat im just an old head who likes holding my games/media in my hands not just a digital thing and I think people who prefer digital are getting ripped off and it bugs me on both fronts
Not to mention the resaleability. Can't sell digital downloads second hand once you've finished the campaign. Or pick up games that you skipped a few years back that are outdated and worth next to nothing now. Blizzard store on PC for example, still want full RRP for near decade old games because they have a stranglehold on the market, I.e. you can't buy disks for pc anymore and until recently, their games were only available through their own online store

I grew up playing PS1 and PS2 and i had hundreds of CD's and DVD's. But after more than a decade or two, not a single one works anymore. They all got either scratched, or ruined by humidity, or started degrading and flaking, some of them even got moldy and green, some discs got stuck together, some of them just stopped working for no reason even if they look fine, maybe due to overplaying.. Some discs work fine until you reach a point where the game is stuck because some part is corrupted.
And i used to take care of them, they were kept either in original boxes or zipped cases or stacked cases. But time and humidity does it's thing. In summer it gets over 70% humidity here in my area, i'm not gonna run a 400w dehumidifier in a separate room just to keep my discs safe. Also they took too much space in the house, if i placed all the discs on top of each other they would be the size of a fridge. I'm happy for digital copies, i don't have to worry about any of that. You only need to take care of your account. Also, if the disc reader gets broken you can't play any of physical copies. And i never had a digital game stripped away from me, the only game i know that got revoked was Silent Hills P.T, but as far as i know those who downloaded it on time still have the game.

Usually companies hold onto that much cash to pay out dividends if they tank though. Don't read too much into this, it can go either way.

So true. Love me from Skyrim, but I had realized on my first playthrough there were things missing. Not being able to create your own spells, like a gigantic, super weak fireball that would just agro a whole town, is a pretty big downgrade imo. So much fun could be had with oblivion's magic system alone.
It felt weird in Skyrim when you would talk to an NPC and it didn't zoom in as close as Oblivion during conversations. As much as I didn't really care for the Oblivion gates, it is still my favorite. Did Skyrim even have the speechcraft wheel thing? I have not played it in a decade and don't remember.

If Oblivion remake comes out, watch Bethesda order a cease and desist on Skyblivion since it could steal players away. Then again maybe not since they're not Nintendo but I wouldn't be surprised since if Skyblivion didn't exist, players would be forced to buy the official remake even if it was awful.
I don't think Bethesda would do it. They're not as anti-consumer as everyone says they are. Their bosses, however, I could see doing it. Though they usually aren't too bad to consumers, either. I think both companies mean well for their consumers, they are just so out of touch.
They know most people love to mod their games, so they might just leave it. Who knows, if the remakes good, the mod might build more hype.

Morrowind was the absolute best story and best “loot based” Elder Scrolls game I’ve ever played. I got it from my buddy a few years after it came out and I played at least a half dozen, full playthroughs.i played it for at least 5-10 years, even after Xbox 360 came out. Being the Nerevarine was the best story of all of the “recent” Elder Scrolls releases. I remember reading the books (non skill books, just to understand the lore and the history. Imo, Vibec was the coolest town in any ES games. It had mark, recall and the index’s to travel easily to where you’d recently been. The Dwemer played a huge role in the game. It’s my favorite game of all time and that is saying ALOT!
GameStop also has nearly $5 Billion in cash reserves with nearly no debt and has been profitable for the second straight quarter in a row. They may be looking to be an online only business soon but definitely not in any danger anytime soon.

Oblivion was the first game of it's kind that i ever played, and really opened me up to trying other games like it. I'd personally be happy with a remake of the game, because to this day I can go back to the original when there are more modern games that I'm not nearly as interested in

I don't want an all digital future. When I bought Indiana Jones for the Xbox last week, only half the game was on the disc and the rest i got to download. This wasn't the case a few years back! (for rdr2, rockstar provided 2 discs why can't Microsoft do the same!).

I think one of my favorite parts of Gameranx’s development as a channel is that they have become more openly critical of the different practices of gaming companies. Specifically Nintendo and their suing everyone for everything.

The one time I've had a gaming console stolen was in college with my 360, and I'm still mainly salty that I lost my Oblivion save with who knows how many hours put into it. 😔
I work at a Gamestop and we're consistently busy for the most part. But, a lot of that is due to the 2 closest stores not being the greatest. We get calls all the time complaining about the other 2 stores. We're also one of the "retro" stores that can actually sell older games, which is great and all, but we constantly get shipments from other stores that can take retro games for trade and can't sell. So, they send it to stores like the one I work at. We have more drawers dedicated to Xbox 360 games than other platform we have games for. It's getting a bit much at this point haha
Used to work at GameStop Canada until recently. I belive they've closed a significant number of Canadian stores as well.
Most of the corporate management have a "we're too big to fail" mentality. The overall marketing strategy seems to be to try selling different products (funko pops, manga, apparel etc) to the same audience, instead of focusing on core business. Only about 20% of floor space is allocated for gaming.
In my experience it has been hurting business significantly. Long term regular customers stopped coming once the focus shifted away from gaming, and the expanded catalog of collectibles didn't bring in new customers.
According to a regional manager, corporate also don't belive that social media is a viable platform to connect with potential customers, which is absolutely baffling. They rely solely on potential customers walking in the door in order to make a sale.

Yeah I'm not at all surprised to see them closing stores. Tried to stop by my local GameStop (hadn't been in years) to grab a copy of Metaphor ReFantazio about a week after it dropped, didn't even question that they might not have it. ........guy at the counter told me in so many words "yeah if you don't preorder it we won't order it, that's how it is with all new releases now".
..I drove across the street to Target and they had a plethora of copies. Like, why would they not even *try* to stock extra copies of the newest games? Clearly there was no supply shortage lol, I was truly baffled.
How is selling different products not focusing on the core business? Do you have any idea what core business means? Also they're very active on socials this is blatantly false.
I guess in another 5 to 10 years, physical game media will be a thing of the past. Digital downloads and game publishers have been chipping away at retailers for years now. Most disks serve only to provide the access key to the download these days, and I don't think a single game is published on disk for PC anymore. It's a shame as most of my early gaming experiences were thanks to the second-hand market, which is no longer possible with digital downloads.

I was an assistant manager at a GameStop up until the start of 2020 when I left to pursue better opportunities. The manager there is one of my best friends to this day, and I have tried many times convincing him to walk away and get paid what he's worth but he's good at what he does and he loves doing it. It makes me sad every time they announce the company is failing because I worry about him. His store is thriving, but the stress of the company overall weighs on him heavily.

The same game engine that everyone in the gaming world has been pointing too since Fallout 4 launched in 2015 and calling it dated, because it is.
This is the entire issue with this mod, because if Skyrim never released in 2011 and instead released in 2024, it wouldn't have even sold 5m copies and it wouldn't be anywhere near the top of any lists. It would probably be in a similar situation to what Starfield is at now.

Just don’t pull a Skyrim and strip out 90% of the depth. I never actually realize how bad it was until I recently did a vanilla playthrough.

@@bronzin1445 You're the dragonborn.. it's an action roleplay at best. You can do things that just feel counter productive to the forced narrative. Nothing feels natural in Skyrim. It got way too much praise. And then they too k it even further the wrong direction with Fallout 4 but that got gobbled up by casuals too.

Oblivion to me was a far better game in terms of story. If they fixed up the visuals, controller support etc I'd go back and replay that. I spent countless hours even in 2024 MODDING Oblivion for fun but I just couldn't get back into it.
Fromsoft games are by *far* my favorite games to put this into context. I would rather Fromsoft be fully self reliant but if any big corporation were to ever control them I would feel safest if Sony were the ones with the keys. I understand that many would disagree because of how they are handling the Bloodborne IP (my favorite game of all time), I think they showed their love and respect towards the series by how they handled the Demon’s Souls remake. Besides, having more ownership over Fromsoft might incentivize Sony to do something with the Bloodborne IP bc as of right now I feel they are saving it the same way all gamers save their potions and never use them throughout the game 😊
Absolutely no one outside of Sony, and probably not even most people at Sony, know how they're handling the Bloodborne IP. Demon's Souls lay dormant for about 10 years before work was started on a remake. My money is on a BB remaster being a launch title for PS6, if Sony are smart. The original is still a console seller to this day. I have friends that were strictly PC who still bought a PS4 to play it.

But the bright side is they will remake it most likely with the highest quality they can as they’ve done with the rest of their IPs. Love or hate the games, they do make them high quality. And I would rather wait as long as I need for someone to do Bloodborne justice rather than rush something out. Imagine if Microsoft bought out Fromsoft…

I'm concerned now that future games will be Sony exclusives. That's only a minor inconvenience right now because I wanted to sell my PS5, but down the road it seems like I'm tied to Playstation whether I like it or not.
My friend was a manager at Gamestop and they screwed him over. They told him he was getting paid too much so they slashed his pay in half and took away his overtime. It happened to the other managers in the region too so they all left out. Thankfully my friend got a job at Huntington and worked his way up to another manager's position.

They can't do FO3 because they lost the source code years ago. That's why they can't fix the compatibility issues.

I worked at Gamestop for around 7 years back in the late 00s and up to 2014. I spent the last two years at a store manager. Gamestop's problem now, as it was back then, is the same problem with every single corporate business - pushing shareholder profits over the welfare of employees and the desires of the customers. I had to work through hurricanes. I had to work on national holidays where the store made $125 for an 8-hour period. Gamestop tried to essentially turn the store into a microtransaction paradise - Apple-produce repairs; magazine subscriptions; cell phone plans... I hated nothing more than answering the phone and spending 30 seconds trying to recite the 13 offerings that corporate wanted us to push down customers' throats before we even allowed them to ask us if we had that particular used $2 PS3 game that they wanted to buy... if I'm not painting the picture clearly enough, the problem with Gamestop corporate is the same as Hollywood corporate: complete disconnect from what people actually want. And that's why their stocks have gone in the toilet the past decade. A complete disconnect from what customers want to shop for. And all the "diamond hands" morons buying up the meme stock? Those fuzzy memories they have of their favorite store memories are from a time that hasn't existed in well over a decade.
Here is something that gaming journalists should learn about games. Now I don't know if this is the case with STALKER 2 but a lot of games are binarized in a way that makes it impossible to make tiny changes in their worlds. Like, you want to change the location of a tiny rock? Deal, you just have to rebinarize the entire game again and ship it as a patch.
Code changes are different, they usually result in tiny patches. That's how some companies make small patches when doing world fixes. The game loads the world and a hard coded script tells the engine to move the rock to a new place, before it's ever visualized.
I'd love to see a Morrowind remake on Unreal Engine 5.

It’s been confirmed as of or three days ago. They aren’t sure if it’s remake or remaster as far as the news goes. The question posed was if they were going to release a cease and desist on skyblivion mods.

I’ll always support my GameStop I always buy physical games, especially with all these big companies saying buying digital my isnt owning the game why would I buy it then when I could physically hold onto it for ever and pass it on
I hope the oblivion remake at least fixes the broken level scaling and isn't just a lazy remaster. I would also personally appreciate a bit of a combat update. Otherwise, much more excited for the oblivion mod.
As someone who has played Oblivion and the DLCs for it, I don't know if I'll get it if they're doing a Master Chief collection type of remaster. I'd prefer an actual remake where they overhaul some of the systems such as magic and archery, but more than likely it'll be a reskin with some slightly better lighting. Some people who have only played Skyrim would be disappointed to find out you can't cast with both hands and archery being useless. Even sneaking was an abomination when guards would teleport to you when lockpicking a house.
We still have a few local GameStops here in Portland, OR. I do go buy games there when I want a physical disc, which is fairly often. And we also have a few small independent shops that sell older games, consoles and peripherals, and those are really cool. (Shout out to Flip Flop Games on N. Lombard!) I know the clock is ticking, but I’m enjoying it while I can.
I think the Switch dock having fan vents is probably for when you’re playing it for longer than a couple hours, since it’s plugged in, not that the dock gives it more power. The Steam Deck as an example, I use a third party dock to play on the tv, and whenever I play it docked it can get pretty hot after a couple hours. I also don’t think it’d make sense to make it “better” with the dock when the whole point of the Switch is that its handheld.

I feel like GameStop could possibly survive a bit longer if they kept track of their inventory better on their website. Trying to find a game instock online is nearly impossible. Just now I checked my local store's "In Stock" inventory and it says they only have 12 used PS4 games right now. Wildly inaccurate number and its like that at the other locations in my area. Is it just me? Just my city? It can't be... Right? I would be spending a good bit more there but I'm not calling multiple stores to try to find a specific game. For the past few years I have found small businesses on eBay to have very similar prices, a way larger selection of games and super quick shipping.

I still remember midnight releases at GS the line wrapped around the block especially for the latest COD whenever it would drop in the 2010s. Man how things have changed as time flies.
My local GameStop was closed way back, it made me sad because I really enjoyed hitting the store on release day to pick up a new game. The trade-in system was great too.
What I think would be really cool is a Daggerfall remake. Maybe not with a world map as big as Daggerfall's, but still huge. The social mechanics in the game could be really interesting in a modern game.
I'm glad you mentioned skyblivion. I've been waiting for this for years and it doesn't make any sense for Bethesda to Remake it. The guys behind it took their approval before starting the project.

Hi, this a keyholder, lower management at GameStop, yes, things have been really rough for all of us that work at our location, we did start offering PSA grading for pokemon cards which has surprisingly gone really well, it may help in the long run but as a location in a shopping center and well placed around other stores, it has been pretty slow for us and been used pretty much to save on ps5 consoles for the holidays... Digital editions that dont help our store in the long run at all... Do video games a favor and your wallet a favor too and buy disc editions so that you actually own your games, not only that, but physical will always save you money. I know its coming from an employee, but for real, letting your entire library of games come down to a password that may be hacked in the future should not become the norm. I know im just waiting to see my favorite store close down soon, but at least i can give some advice...

It has been many years since I have played Oblivion, but I remember the MQ and faction quest lines being much better than Skyrim. I made my first mods for Oblivion.
I tend to play a stealth character, and stealthing was nearly impossible for Oblivion gates. My solution became "run like hell". I would sneak as far as I could. Once I was discovered I would just sprint, avoiding all combat, until I could find another place to hide. Do that all the way to the gate and then hope so survive whatever abuse awaited me long enough for the gate to close. It seems like a cheat but it was very much in line with what my character would do.
My only issue with this GameStop segment is it talks about a decline in revenue, which sounds bad but not when you mention profits are up.
In fact they have trimmed the fat (bad performing stores) and have had their most profitable last 3 quarters in a long time..
I see it as continuing to trim fat, which likely won’t reduce sales.
I have 3 stores near me in a pretty tight radius. They could drop one store and likely not reduce store visits.
Often these large file size updates are so big because a single file in a pack of files has to be overwritten, not because they had to add 100gb to the game.
GameStop needs to pivot hard into a more MicroCenter like model.
Large central locations with steep enough discounts and tight enough crews to outlast market shifts.
Thanks for mentioning that: I also immediately thought of and actually worried for Skyblivion. Also, if Bethesda had any shred of common sense they would just licence that project and pay the team behind it.
On an unrelated note, Game Spot can surely thank tech journalists and PC makers for telling everyone that blueray players are pointless and physical media belong in the past. Try buying a game these days: all you can do is pay for a licence to play and own nothing. Such a great plan!
