  • This video, shot in 4K using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone, was filmed in Bryan Wyoming in early December 2017. During the 3 day trip to Green River and Bryan I had fairly high winds the whole time which made getting good quality audio really difficult.
The Union Pacific Railroad reached the Green River Wyoming area in the late 1880’s and had planned to make Green River the Division Point (rail yard, refueling, etc) and local headquarters but found the land had already been bought up by speculators and rather than pay more for the land they would need they decided to move another dozen miles west and start their own town, called Bryan, and make that the local headquarters and division point. That decision spelled doom for Green River and its population declined markedly.
A few years later the water source they needed to supply the steam trains, the Black Forks River, dried up after a prolonged drought so UP had no choice but to pack up and move back to Green River in 1872. The move turned Bryan into a ghost town and put Green River on the path to become a significant city in the region and one of the busiest train yards in the west.
There are a few remnants of the town of Bryan, once home to about 3000 people, but very little of it remains today - just some stone foundation outlines and little else.
In the early 1920’s the US Postal Service began their air mail service and needed some way to help the pilots navigate the vast distances of the American west. At the time there were no electronic navigation aids and many pilots were killed as they flew in bad weather and at night without navigation aids. Pilots were flying by recognizing prominent land features, but, particularly in the desert west, there were few features to be found. The solution the US Postal Service came up with was to install a series of large concrete arrows spaced about 10 miles apart and featuring a bright yellow or orange arrow and about 70 feet or about 22m in length with many also including a tower with rotating beacon often powered by a generator. By the early 30’s electronic navigation aids made the arrows obsolete and they were abandoned. You can see the arrow at these coordinates: 41.562092, -109.678056.

Yes, that correct -- not much of a town/city today but about 150 years ago it was a town of about 3000. There were a lot of short lived towns in the wild west days with mining booms and the railroad. Here's another video of a town that lived for a short time but had a storied history in that blink of an eye.

For some strange reason UA-cam informs me that this video has been demonitized as it's not suitable for advertisers -- say what? I can't think of a single thing in this video or my notes about it that could be flagged as unsuitable. Very strange.

They fixed the monitization problem in one day so that's a good thing. Still not sure why it was flagged to begin with and no word fro them as to why.
