There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

Condolences to Robert. I lost my dad when I was still a young man. There was an odd adjustment period as I suddenly had to fill his shoes. I didn't have time to mourn until 16yrs later.
A few reruns won't hurt us. Take your time, sir.

Sorry to hear it Robert. My dad's health is in fairly-certainly-terminal decline in the last couple of weeks so I kind of feel your pain (but stuff like running through BTB is a fun distraction lately, thankyou!), absolutely take all the time you need.

Fun Fact: Morton Koopa Jr. from the Super Mario games was named after Morton Downey Jr. because as Dayvv Brooks, the person who named all seven of the Koopalings in Super Mario Bros. 3, put it, he "looked like a loudmouth".

    • @portmantologist
      @portmantologist 4 місяці тому +7

And the context of him attempting a singing career makes sense because all the other Koopalings were named after musicians like Iggy Pop, Wendy O. Williams and Beethoven.

@@portmantologist Everyone except for Larry. According to Dayvv Brooks, Larry wasn't named after a musician or anyone in particular, he just decided to call him that because he simply thought he looked like a Larry.
Super Mario World also features the mini-boss, Reznor, who is named after Trent Reznor, continuing the music theme from Super Mario Bros. 3.

@@cjtherou4427 Let's be honest with ourselves, 99 times out of 100, when this guy is being brought up, it's because of my dearest "little" brother, Morton Koopa Jr.

A friend of mine replaced Morton Downey Jr. on the air in Cleveland after his final shot at broadacsting on AM talk radio failed. He told me he really was a prick in real life.

I lost my dad almost a year ago to the day that this came out, three days before my brother's 20th birthday. Its an impossible thing to describe losing a parent when you're young. That foreword hit me like a truck this morning on my drive, but being able to share that vulnerable position you're in is something that I struggle with every day so I applaud you for that. Cheers all o7

I vaguely remember this guy. His show used to air after Tom Snyder at like 2am. I'd be up working on a project for school & leave the tv on. His logo was literally a mouth. Pretty much says it all. Always wondered what happened to him.

To clarify: Morton Downy Jr. was not in "Tales from the crypt" but a spin off show of Tales from the dark side called "Monsters". He gets turned into a gross little wet puppet monster

Morton was my first exposure to right wing media, encountered during late-night channel flipping when I was in middle school.
I remembered the fake Nazi attack as part of his downfall but was not aware of how the Tawana Brawley case had played a part.
It's kind of hilarious that having tanked his show by fixating on a case about a fake attack where the alleged victim scrawled provocative symbols on themselves, he tries to do the same thing. All that time spent on the Brawley case and his take away seems to be that he should try to do it himself!

I remember watching the Morton Downey Jr Show and it was a riot back then. The two most notable incidents were that fight between Al Sharpton and Roy Innis and the time he made Seka so upset that she walked off the stage before the show ended. I hadn't thought about this guy in a while and it's so odd how there always seems to be one guy out there who can rally young, lost white guys and steer them down the wrong path. [Downey, Andrew Tate, Joe Rogan, Rush Limbaugh, Trump, etc...]

We got Wally George through cable TV syndication in Cleveland at the same time that Georgia wrestling promotion was ending and the WWF was just getting started. I always thought it was scripted just like wrestling, and I thought the same thing about MDJ later on. I was a smarter than average adolescent I suppose, but I immediately recognized their clear contradictions. I guess that's also why Marx' critique of capitalism appealed to me.
Springer didn't flow from the Pyne/George/Downey river, he was much more of the Phil Donahue stream. There was never any ideology behind him, just raw exploitation.

Listening to this episode in June 2024, and being reminded of Lyndon Larouche running for president from a prison cell hits alittle differently.
