All very good information, thank you for the valuable share. I suggest to my MBA students for Directed Research to make parallels of the Problem Statement to a good business Vision statement.
Both have to be visceral and real. Research definitely means cutting the cords of extrinsic motivation and finding your own interests and purpose, set your own standards. The penultimate "Create" level of Bloom's Revised Taxonomy of Cognition, plus passion. The problem has to mean something to you.

My field is Public Administration (General). I am having a very difficult time in narrowing my topic. The problem statement here sounds like a purpose statement. A problem statement informs us about what the problem is, why is it a problem, what we know about it, what we don’t know, and what the researcher wants us to know. Thus the name "PROBLEM STATEMENT"
