    My son and I are both fairly new to riding -- less than a year. He has an '86 EX500, and I have an '09 Ninja 500. We also bought some dirt bikes we bought. We both want to learn how to maintain our bikes on our own. Especially since my son blew an engine gasket :-)
    It has taken me a few months, but I've watched this entire series from Episode 1 up to this latest video. Your videos are terrific for a number of reasons: You aren't skipping any steps, you do a great job explaining the details, you don't use $800 tools, you don't half-ass any steps, I'm learning how to swear like a Brit... I could go on.
    I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. I know it takes a lot of time and effort, and I'm sure every now and then someone asks you "Why the heck are you making these videos?" There are more than a few of us that are learning a great deal about this specific bike, and bike maintenance in general. We really appreciate what you are doing here with the backyard project and the videos.

      Thanks dude (s) lol Sometimes I get messages like this and it makes it all worth it (holding back the tears) but seriously it really does, and its great to hear you and your son and doing this sort of stuff together. It seems to be a less and less frequent accurance these days.
      There is this exclusion which you find in alot of fields, and biking etc is one of them. Not so much the riding, but more of the fixing. There's alot of - well if you don't understand it then you must be a dumbass! - kinda thing.
      These things are hard to understand, you just have to find a common link that makes it easier.
      Fixing bikes and engines is something that takes years of practice and fuck-ups to truely get your head around, and passing that on is the only way it will live on.
      I'm waffeling now, but you get the point. Thanks for the awesome comment - matt

    Your videos are really cool, love them! I have the same bike, older though and since I'm new to riding and quiet ignorant about maintenance it really helps me to understand a bit about this machine! Oh... a question, how on earth can you remove the tail panel?... :)

      Do you mean the plastic hugger, where a mud guard would live? otherwise known as the undertray?

      The Workshop :) There are two panels on each side and one behind the seat where the bar for passengers sticks out. That is the one...

      I found that video with the mud guard, I'm sooooo far from doing something like that... I'm just doing little cleaning and don't wanna break anything.

      There are two main bolts under where the seats lives. You also have to take off those 2 side fairings before removing it, and the grab handle also has to come off - matt
