Vintage Cessna 172 - The Skyhawk - Windshear on Landing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- We meet Gary and his 1956 Cessna 172 and then take it up in the air for a flight. We have to deal with some pretty bad wind shear on landing.

The world needs more guys like Gary -- what a good-hearted guy sharing aviation. Cheers to Gary!
Thank you!

Totally agree. Not many like him.
love the eyes gives your plane real personality
Probably always flies IFR.
A little wind shear, some crosswind is no match for a capable pilot and the safety of a solid 172. Well done
Thank you!
@@TechnoMayor Awesome job on a rough day!
I enjoyed the video but, I wish you had given us a tour of the panel. I like to see how owners have outfitted their planes.
cbrnews I owned a 1966 Cessna 172. . . The first thing I did was renew the panel to a “six pack”.
I know there is concern about shotgun panels. But, I have airspeed, horizon, DG, electric T&B left to right top row, I am a VFR pilot, have been under the hood for flight review, and I am not sure I do not prefer the way it is, certainly not worth the hassle of changing to 6 pack, believe me on the low cowl early 172. The pull start is as noted cool. The drive I understand is $500 if it goes bad, which as a practical matter goes a long way to a new $1000 key start. The plunger was leaking oil on mine, but a new garter seal made it better.
1:30 'I begged my wife, pleaded and made my case'. People don't believe me when I tell them you need wife's approval first when buying a plane.
"People don't believe me when I tell them you need wife's approval first when buying a plane" those would be divorced people!
Love your channel man!
Pilot: I want to buy a 172.
Wife: You choose, its either me or that plane!
Pilot: I'll miss you terribly...
You only need her approval if she is allocated control of family funds or works and pays into them.
@@ellenorbjornsdottir1166 None of those are the case with my wife but I still wouldn't DREAM of buying an airplane without her approval because we're MARRIED and we make major decisions TOGETHER. Peace in the home is worth far more than any airplane or any other dang thing. And since I am that way, if I am responsible and we can afford it, it's not that difficult to get approval for things. She probably would let me get an airplane if we could afford it, if only I could see well enough to fly it.
The graphic overlay really brings the windshear into focus. Gary handled that like a pro!
Thank you!
I love the venturies.. such a simple and effective way of making things work and less risk of failure too..
Until a spider crawls in there and ruins your day.....
@@christopherleveck6835 thats why you do your preflight..
@@swarajsandhu I know, I just really don't like spiders.... In the summer the gliders were FULL of them. MONSTERS.
That's why I liked flying in October.
That and great thermals in October.
Beautiful Cessna you got there Gary.
Thank You!
Glad I watched this. I'm 60 and working on my private so I needed a little inspiration. Thanks Bobby - Hi to Laura!
Hope you finish up soon!
Me too John, 2021 so I am 60 and in Mumbai India on business and will use the time here to do my PPL
Obtained my PPL, spending most time in a 1958 Cessna 172. Shes a very beautiful bird Gary. Kudos to the Wife!🙏🇺🇸👍
Thank you x2!
TechnoMayor My pleasure. If you're ever around Abilene, please let me know.
What a cute little airplane!
OMG, yeah! The pull start! My uncle co-owned an old 150 and I remember pulling the handle to start the engine! What a great flashback!
Love those early 172s. The straight tail is so beautiful
Very nice looking airplane. Nice paint.
Great video as always! My kids (and I) think the colors and eyes are the best part! Thank you!
I am sure encountering wind sheer on final in a Cessna 172 doesn't make your day but Gary handled it beautifully! I couldn't believe how rapidly the altitude indicator dropped as a result. I think for landing aircraft aircraft, wind sheer is probably the hardest thing to deal with on final. Crosswinds you can crab your way in but wind sheer is another story. It must be even harder in a 172 where you don't have many options at your disposal. Gary was right on the money! Love your channel because of the variety of episodes you post!
I am not sure why a Cessna 172 is a special problem in a crosswind. They go around as well as any plane. The slow landing speed is a big plus. The tricycle gear is relatively stable.
I own a 57" C-172, love the video , need more videos like these!
That is a beautiful plane.
Owned a 1960 172. I loved that airplane.
I was in the young eagles program and I loved it ! I’m hoping to fly again soon! There’s no other feeling like it!
Nice and articulate gentleman! Really enjoyed this, thanks.
Thank You!
one of the most interesting interviews of the beautiful 172
Grandpa had 1967 like that flew with him all the time growing up as a kid i miss flying so so much theres nothing like it. I get very emotional everytime i see a old cessna skyhawk
Awesome landing during crosswind & wind shear conditions!!!
Thank you!
That's a fun one. Terrific idea to add the eyes! It's neat as an adult, I can't imagine how amazing that must be for the kids he takes up. Another great pilot too. I love his story, and clearly he knows what he's doing handling that wind.
I love vintage 172s, and this one's a real beauty! Great job keeping her alive and flying, Gary!
Manual flaps are awesome! As a young kid first learning to fly they gave me a totally different view on how using flaps affected the plane, as I could feel the changes in flight characteristics between my right hand (flaps lever), left hand (yoke), feet (rudder pedals), and butt (seat).
Very nice plane. Great video of course. I love the vintage venturi tubes. I would love to buy a 172. Thanks for sharing.
Great Looking Plane With A Pilot Who Seems Like A Great Guy. Another Fun Video To Watch.
Gary, Sharp looking airplane. We need to make a $100 barbecue run down to Stephenville.
My plane seems to know the way to SEP without much input from me. ;-)
I used to make trips over to Catalina Island (AVX) for the most expensive Buffalo Burger(s). Or Flow's Restaurant at Chino Airport for Biscuits and Gravy.
gorgeous plane . love the old ones. love the folks who keep them flying. these will outlive the new hawks.
Awesome Landing Gary. Way to handle it
The prettiest 172 I’ve seen. Well done sir and even though not great horsepower I think the continental has a nicer sound than the lycoming
Beautiful vintage 172 , very cool! Awesome landing with crosswinds and wind shear . Awesome skills ! Well done . Great video!
This channel is awesome! I especially like the older planes you show like these, stuff the average man can afford.
I commend you sir. Your videos are amazing. Please keep doing what you do 👍🏼👍🏼
Great landing.. From a sailors point of view.. I could almost feel my stomach lurching when Bobby explained the 80ft drop in one sec.
That’s is one well taken care 172 😎 thanks for the video
The challenges of a bit of wind sheer and cross wind make flying interesting and fun. Handling them builds skill and confidence.
Once again Bobby, a very nice fellow to take us all flying in East Texas sunshine. Loved the windshield shade too. Hard to believe that an aircraft of this vintage is still a viable means of transportation. Not fast, not slow and easy on the fuel. Perfect little private aircraft!
Nice man and a safe fun flight. Good show, Flying Doodles.
Cool old plane sir. You seem like a great guy.
Thank you for those kind words.
Awesome format, and nice people. Interesting history of the 172 as well. I'd heard the story about the duration flight with car to plane refueling, but never gets old to hear it again. Subscribed!!
My family owns one of these beauties and I am currently an ERAU Prescott student and I can say with extreme confidence that it flys better than a brand new 2020 Skyhawk SP.
Brings back fond memories , I learned at Santa Susana in Simi Valley Ca, typical crosswinds @ 15-20 mph on a 1980ft runway, but you gotta learn somewhere !! That little FBO closed forever in around 1986.
Beautiful vintage 172. Love the colors as well as the eye's. Nice flying!
I always watch from beginning to end...
cool landing
Cool Bobby! Flew over my neighborhood!
That's a cool plane. And what a landing 🔥
I did my Commerical Instrument and Multi at Fort Worth Meacham Field back in 1976, Acme School of Aeronautics. They use to publish the Blue Book FAA Test guides, before the Freedom of Information Act. You do ground school and get the written passed first before you would fly- The FAA had a GADO (General Aviation District Office) in the same building. Once a week Olive Beech would show up in a brand new King Air 200 to go shopping or what have you in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. 43 years come Sept to Dec this year. Oh and an Instrument 172 was 24 dollars an hour with the instructor. Mine was a German fellow, the guys that ran the school was all retired USAF colonels.
I learned to fly and took my practical test in my dad's '56 172, 6030A.
Thanks for doing this. It's a neat story. Beautiful camera work and editing. Very entertaining.
He handled that like a boss! I have never seen so many hangars for such a small field.
excelent 172
I love the old cessnas. I wish they were still built like that
A REAL 172!. The "Razorback" 172 still used the 170 main gear, thusly a 6 footer can stand upright underneath the wing. A truly honest airplane, and a really tough bird. Oh yeah... fun to fly and instruct in.
Thank you!
Looks brand new!
What a great plane. It's what I learned on and it was so much fun to fly
That's why I love my floats no wind sheer problem nose to the wind easy on the flaps
Cool airplane great video, would've liked to see more of that vintage instrument panel.
Good catch Gary!
What a pretty aircraft! Great pilot, too!
Love the sun visor.
Thank you, the best $15 I've spent on the plane.
Got my license in 66 in that!!! Memories!! Thanks!!
In this plane or one like it?
Cessna 172 beautiful ,great👍👍
Thank you!!
@@TechnoMayor You're Welcome 🙏🙏
Awesome guy!
Thank you!
I´m so glad I discovered this UA-cam channel. Great work Flying Doodles!
Agree a bit and maybe the interior. It looks like just a beautiful plane.
I like Gary. Also knows his oats.
I trained in a 1973 C172. It had a 180 HP power plant with tuned exhaust. It also had 40 degrees of flaps. I swear my CFII could make that plane hover. The thing is, you could power on and do a go around with those barn doors down. I loved that plane. Another awesome video! Will we see Laura appear in any Flying Doodles, Hmm? Thanks for sharing your great plane. Love the eye sun shade!
👍✅ Tks Bobby & Gary
Don't become overdependent on ADS-B, but do get it. Its making flight a lot safer. You can pick up a wingtip mounted ADS-B/light for $1849 (uses power from the light) and supplement that with a cheap cockpit display for $200 or so.
HA! My first airplane was a 1959 C172, it had a lot of work done on the panel so it was nice! I loved those Jbar flaps!
Beautiful airplane
Nice video!
nice landing
man talk about a landing uhh I have been there excellent job Gary; another great episode thumbs up
Thank you for your kind words.
Great landing, good job...
These Flying Doodles videos are your best work, please keep it up.
I love that plane!
Thank You!
As someone who desperately loves aviation and flying, but has struggled for his entire life with the Time/Money issue and is currently not in a position to be flying because of that exact issue - I love hearing these stories from people who did not get to accomplish this dream until later in life.
Great job on the wind shear and crosswind. I like the challenge of crosswind landings but I'd rather skip the windshear event lol. I love the aircraft. It's gorgeous and I can relate to putting the eyes in for your grandson. Grandkids are a gift.
I didn't know they made them with pull start back in the day. Cool!
That's a lot of hangars at his little airport.
Love this plane, congratulations.
A great oldtimer. Thanks for the video. Shalom
Hello Gary.....you are also a fan of the "Planes" movies? Your plane with the big blue (sun protector) eyes must looking so funny on the Apron! Thumbs up. I know now......planes have faces.......and definitely a own character !!! You own a very beautiful vintage 172.
Yes, a group of us local pilots when to the fist showing of "Planes" at the local theatre. My 2 1/2 year old grandson loved it as well. Thank you for your kind words.
Great looking plane
Thank You!
Who doesn't love a 172?
Thank you!
this man knew what he was doing calm down young buck
Bobby - love you flying videos (and the boat too...)!! Would love to have seen that unique pull start in action. In the future, if you have a plane that has something unique please consider showing it. I'm sure the aviation fans would love it! Cheers
great flying thank you
Did Hicks and Arlington Muni....many many times also Pecan Plantation fun easy
Very cool. Didn't know you were about an hour away from me by car. Maybe you can fly over to McKinney. I'll take you to Hutchins for BBQ just for the chance to fly in this plane for a bit.
Wow, at first I looked and I was thinking why the hell is there a train going down the runway. LOL
2:30 It's not as fast as a new 172 but if it takes 10 minutes longer to get somewhere that's 10 more minutes of flying. Those are words to live by right there, he's a very wise man.
That was amazing
Just GREAT
Love your 172 and the paint job, same color as the new BMW R1250 GS motorcycle! Thanks, for turning me on to your new channel, used to have a Bonanza, need to get back in the saddle!
I had to google the motorcycle... I wonder if I can convince my wife to let me buy one since it matches the plane. ;-)
Beautiful plane!
