Back in the early 1960s, our dad bought my younger brother and me each a brand new military surplus M1 carbines still covered in cosmiline. Dad was a Marine and taught us how to field strip and clean them the Marine Corp way.I wish I still had mine .Those were fun days.

That's cool! Marine Corps way, that has a very nice ring to it. They're the rifle masters, and for the M1 carbine? Like damn son.. those Marines back then could cover ground in a hurry, and with such a light & maneuverable rifle like this, you could imagine what their capabilities were at medium ranges with cover.. welding these things.
When loading those 7.62x39 stripper clips, it's much easier when you lift the front of the cartridge up and push with your thumb down at the same time to load the cartridges. You will load it much smoother and faster that way.

Ditto. I love the sks and it’s modularity with newer chassis but the m1 is so slick and smooth. The m1 cartridge is no joke at close range. The action on that puppy is so smooth for a gun that old.
@@skeetermartini m1 is very similar to Ruger mini 14s also. That’s what I like . Funny thing is I grew up shooting Dads Vietnam Chinese SKS and thought it was a great tight action gun. But eventual purchased a reproduction auto ordnance m1 carbine in 2008 or so and really took to it . I have since tricked it out with aluminum hand guard rails and pistol grip stock etc plus have a USGI carbine for backup. I also have two mini 14 . I just love the action on those guns. Only thing I prefer is a pistol grip . Sold my AR to Dad so in fam!
The SKS had to be compared with the M1 Garand not the M1 Carbine.
my Dad carried an M2 Carbine in the early Vietnam war, always said the quieter report of it compared to the other weapons being used was an advantage in the jungle. when I bought myself an SKS back in '89 he was first shocked to see one after over 20yrs - and then totally approved of getting it. said he'd been shot at by them, and would not recommend that
he never say anything bad about the sks? Did he see a lot of them in the war?
Grandpa didn't have anything bad to say about them except there heavy.he ditched the m16 for an ak47

I have shot both. I love the SKS for what it is but the Carbine always put a smile on my face. Would say it is less reliable but the M1 is just a treat to shoot and a perfect PDW ahead of its time.
My dad was WW2 USMC on Okinawa and was howitzer fire control man. He was issued the M1 carbine. He was not a fan.
I still have an M1 Carbine I inherited from an uncle, who served in WW-II and had it many, many years before me. Love it for nostalgic reasons.
One of the greatest engineering stories in American history is that of the Carbine program. Amazing. I own and shoot several M1 Carbines and all are enjoyable.

With M1 carbine or ar 15 and ak47 you lose your magazine another is damaged You are down to a single shot rifle SLS magazine is permanent Plus you can load 10 rounds faster into a SKS magazine than a M1 Pop open bottom of mag and drop a hand full in and pop back shut Not stripper clips required SKS wins over M1
I don't know what kind.of stripper clips you all were using but me being a SKS owner I used yugoslavian surplus stripper clips with my SKS and never have to push as hard as you two looked to be pushing.
The proper way to use that stripper clip it to push down with your thumb and lift the nose of the bullet up with your index finger while you push the rounds down and you'll notice a huge difference in how the rounds load into the magazine. Hope this helps you guys out.
Of course, as mentioned in principle, they are made for different aspects and each one shines in its default function.
2 fine weapons of history sadly i don't own an M1 carbine because of the dam price but however i have a Chinese SKS and love that rifle shit probably my favorite rifle for some odd reason
I have no issue using my m1 carbine or sks for home defense. The sks will run very smoothly with stripper clips depending on the brand you use that I’ve realized. And the m1 carbine as long as you use new production mags like kci and your springs are up to date it’ll run like a sewing machine. Both have put a lot of people in the dirt. But by using either one, I don’t have to worry about my AR or AK being held up in a police station for a year during the homicide investigation

The proper way to load a SKS from stripper clips is, pull up on the nose of the top cartridge an push down on the back of the upper cartridge with your thumb, an they fly right in the fixed magazine, yank stripper clip out an gtg.

Both are great for ban states. Sks just isn’t as easy to load. Also buying new and used stripper clips the quality is hit or miss all over the place. Both fun and collector value with a history but there’s better modern options.

I wish the M1 carbine would become more popular, so maybe Magpul could make some decent mags for it. It's such a light handy little rifle.
I have multiple M1 Carbines and love them all . I sure wish we could all petition PSA to add it to their AAC Line of ammunition as we are starving for reasonably priced ammo for these sweet rifles . If they could get the price around their 300 BLK offering they would sell millions upon millions because a lot of the online suppliers have no stock and if they do the price is astronomical !
I own a Yugo M59 SKS, more as a collector's item/plinker than anything else. I think I paid $125 for it about 25 years ago. For that price, and, the fact that it would happily run the cheapest, steel cased, garbage 7.62x39 ammo you could give it, it was definitely good value for money.
Have a 1944 M1- had a 1954 SKS Russian made and all numbers match! Damn I miss her!
I owe both rifles. My SKS is set up more as a Sniper platform (just for fun). I own and like both. My M1 Carbine would be the first pick for PDW.
SKS great on hogs, coyotes or the enemy. Very accurate. Like AK's they run where you want to use them. Especially high desert or brush.

You can't expect the m1 carbine round which is a pistol round, to compete at long range with the sks rifle round. it wasn't designed for that. I've never had the pleasure to shoot an m1 carbine but I have done alot of reading and watched videos on them and my take is that the m1 carbine round is somewhat similar to a good 357 handgun round. add to that the longer barrel of the carbine and you essentially triple-quadruple the effective range of the round. the m1 carbine did well for it's intended purposes and I can't fathom why some would think it not affective for self - home defense
M1 is perfect for home defense! Especially in city! If I lived in city and didn’t hunt it’d probably be only auto rifle I’d own!!
Owning a M1 Carbine I never felt outgunned to 200 yards. The SKS can be good if not battered, beaten and shot out. My dad a Vietnam Vet knew guys as late as '69 that still used M1 Carbines with great effect. Of course then the M16 was not looked well upon by GI's in combat for a plethora of reasons..
M1 carbine is the best !! I feel just like you at 200 yds or less it’s perfect. Unless you’re in the country with greater distances a m1 is probably all you need for shtf rifle in urban suburban areas ! Love mine .

As someone with two SKSs (Russian and Yugo) and a 1944 Inland carbine, if I had to use one Id currently pick my Russian. It’s the most accurate of the bunch, and while I love my carbine I don’t quite trust it’s reliability as much and ammo is much harder to find. Plus 7.62x39 is a better combat round as a whole.
The 30 Carbine is old and in may cases used quite a bit. It's a minimalist design and everything needs to be checked for spec and springs replaced and ALL late WWII updates done. My 2 carbines are as reliable as my 2 AR15s, I have a Colt A2 and a n Aero Precision M4E, my carbines are an Inland and quality Hardware.

Revisiting my previous comment, I have since discovered that my issues with the carbine were due to the magazine springs being backwards. So my opinion may be changing

In Canada, our Commie government has made pretty well anything fun prohibited (ARs, AKs, M1a, FAL, M14 etc). We can still own M1 carbines and SKS, but both pinned at 5 round capacity. The M1 is ridiculously expensive as are Tavors, so if you want a fighting rifle here the SKS is pretty well all there is for semi autos. I enjoy shooting my SKS and I agree that the stripper clips can be a pain. With practice, you can get quite good with them. Another thing to consider is that the quality of the clips vary wildly between the former communist bloc manufacturers. Generally I found the Chinese ones pretty bad for binding, whereas the Czech and Soviet ones the best.

Being a Canadian i have more experiance on the SKS. its a fine rifle. some are accurit enuff to hit a man sized target at 800m probubly 6 out of 10 shots. bayonet can be staked into the ground as an improvised monopod too. that being said the M1 carbine is a much handyer and well thaught out rifle. max practical range is about 300m and thats plenty for what it was desined to be for. my choice would be the M1 carbine.
I had glass bedding done on my sk omfg it shoots as good as any other rifle I constantly scare coyotes running at 300m I think I may have hit one at 500m
M1 is the best for 200 yds or less no doubt. Very rapid fire and ease of use. Too bad in Canada no high capacity I hear.
People keep saying that the .30 Carbine is weak but it actually isn't. It's not weak but just lack velocity.
The problem it has was that it's firing with powder loads of a charged up pistol thus it's obviously lacking in velocity and that's the problem in Korea where the UN forces mostly fought in winter and due to that, both the Chinese and North Korean forces are often in thick winter clothing which the .30 Carbine had a hard time penetrating beyond 200m but once it was a street fight, the .30 Carbine often do well enough for what it was.
Then it was in Vietnam where it really shines. Due to it being smaller, troopers can pack alot of them on treks thru the dense jungle and not be weighed down by it and with the lack of thick clothings due to the humid climate, the round is perfect for the area and better yet, with combat ranges mostly below 300m, the .30 Carbine is more than enough for the job.
That's why even before the US even stepped foot into Vietnam, the French were actually using alot of the M1 Carbines that they got from US surplus and post-war assistance which they loved as it gave them more range than their MAT-49 submachine gun by at least another 150m and the M1 Carbine is way lighter than the MAS-36 and 49 that the French had and shorter so its easier to take it into the jungles and fight with with less fatigue.
When the French left, Vietnam was split into two and suddenly the NVA captured tons of French weaponry and the M1 Carbine also became the Viet Minh's weapon of choice. Not only that, when Diem established the South, America pour aid into South Vietnam and to arm the South Vietnamese Army, the Americans dumped huge old stockpiles of WWII arms to them and ironically, the M1 Carbine reappeared and then the M2 Carbine.
So in Vietnam, the NVA got the better Soviet and China new arms whereas the insurgency department of North Vietnam, the Viet Cong, got all the leftover French and American weapons and they actually loved the M1 Carbines for a reason. It's lighter than the SKS or any French weapon that they're using sans the MAT-49, it shares rounds with the typical weapons their dead adversary is using and with it being shorter than any long-range small arms they had, it made them nearly undetectable and extremely quick and agile in small areas like the tunnel system that they had or infiltrating key South Vietnamese installments.
For the South, same thing. When they got the M2 Carbine, that effectively became their standard arm and also the US unironically built their 1st "assault rifle" without knowing. The South loved the M2 Carbine soo much is that it was controllable under full auto which the M14 struggled, it was lighter than any weapons the US had given to the ARVN forces and with it being that short, it's easier for them to take the M2/M1 Carbine for S&D missions rather than the longer and cumbersome M1 Garand thus they clamoured for more of the M2 Carbine and the ARVN forces did indeed take the M2 Carbine as their standard arm till around 1973 when the US reequipped them with the M16 and was preparing to withdraw from Vietnam while dumping all their new rifles to them.
The SKS on the other hand wasn't a bad rifle and in Vietnam, it was a good rifle but like mentioned above, it was long and hard to use if in confined spaces thus the SKS wasn't used like the M1 Carbine but was given to the marksman teams within the Viet Congs to snipe and target key important South Vietnamese and US officials and scurry away while the forward teams were using AKs and M1 Carbines.
To load the Sks faster flip it upside down so the factory box mag is up, open the trap door and drop ammo into it then close the door , rack the slide and get after it
Love my Chinese and Yugoslavian SKSs and my M2 Carbine. I love my M2 because it has the fun switch on it.

If you're ONLY talking about the gun, sure... but the ammunition is a problem. 7.62x39 is just a vastly superior round by every measure.

The SKS is more reliable and accurate and it’s an actual rifle too
They do make conversions for the SKS to use AK47 magazines. I feel that they are less desirable because you have less ground clearance when in the prone position. Still, a 30 round mag exchange is far less time consuming.

On SKS stripper clips, stick stripper clip in guide. lift the top round slightly and push down with thumb toward its base simultaneously. The rounds will feed easily.

im torn have a sks sporter and a m1 carbine. classic m1 carb. soft and sweet. sks a bit more nads. still easy compared to my m14, clone.

Not to be pedantic or anything but everything I've read the SKS actually saw a limited service in world war II. It was produced and distributed as much as possible at the tail end of world war II. The Russians finally understood that the mosin nagant although a good rifle and some aspects especially as a sniper rifle was problematic especially in urban combat like what they saw in Berlin. Getting a smaller carbine like The SKS and the service was very important to The Soviets.

The better way to load the sks is to flip the rifle upside down with a closed bolt. Reach in pocket and grab a handful of loose rounds toss them in the magazine from the bottom and then slam the magazine shut with the same hand. Flip the rifle back over and charge it if necessary

Every time I watch a WW2 movie, I'm always trying to decide what I would have run, given the option. The massive difference between engagements and weapons makes it pretty damn interesting. .22lr to .30-06 and so much in between.
My Chinese SKS has the worst trigger of any firearm I have ever fired. Would love to own a nice 30 M1 Carbine. My Gunner let me fire his on occasion, great rifle.

That sucks, mine was definitely used in combat. My SKS has a very easy, predictable trigger. The quality of SKS were all over the place. I'm certain mine was in Albania. The M1 has the better clean mfg qc for sure.

Back in the late 80’s through ‘90s gunshops used to just throw sks’s at you.
Got my first one for about 80 something bucks along with 500 rds of PRC
ammo I had some fun with that thing.
Quick tip…avoid the lighter gauge strippers…go with the almost steel like clips,they’re harder to find now but if you hold them side by side you can tell the difference. They work a whole lot better. Not for nothing, just saying is all…

Three things I don't like about the SKS.
1) It's awkward to reload. I would imagine soldiers dropped a lot of live rounds on the ground while removing the loaded stripper clips from their pouches and/or loading them into the rifle.
2) The open sights aren't very good, especially in low-light conditions.
3) It gets hot very quickly.
That said, I've found it to be very reliable.
There are after market sights for the SKS. And there are aftermarket SKS mags. But yes, these are faults of the SKS.

Yes very true! I don’t know why except low volume maybe . That being said the price mostly matters if you are going to be a shooter aka shoot it a lot! I have m1 for home defense and even hunting coyotes but don’t shoot it much at all just have many rounds stored up that I got 7 years ago much cheaper! I shoot pistol 9mm so that beats most everything
I own both I modified both I still don't want to carry one in to battle but they are both fun to shoot
Had a "Universal" brand m-1.... as seen in some A-team episodes, was a little bit picky about mags and function.
Not my first choice but either one would do in a pinch.
New production SKS stripper clips are garbage usually. Try finding surplus ones you will have a much smoother time loading them. Or alternatively you could break in the new clips by running a bullet casing up and down at a bunch of times
Boil the new clips in water, then rub steel wool on them, and heat them up with a blow dryer or heat gun, then while hot, run militech oil on them. You'll never have a more smooth sks clip in the world.
I like the SKS that has been modified by a gunsmith to accept a 30 round duck bill magazine.
SKS and STG44 are way better than M1 and M2 carbine at mid and long distances, but M2 carbine is as good or maybe even better at short distances because of its lower recoil and therefore more controlable bursts.
My personal preference SKS in 7.62x39 all day even over the 7.62x51!!... Widowmaker a man of God

Lol. I have a modified SKS in my safe. Has a Tapco polymer pistol grip stock w/adjustable LOP, a pic rail receiver cover for optics, and I've replaced the original fixed mag w/removable 20 round Tapco SKS mags....still not exactly an ideal "fighting" rifle in modern terms, but it will be good in a pinch to equip an unarmed neighbor for fending off the invading Chinese or Ruskies. Maybe fixed site security detail or something. Lol. Afterall, it functions well as a hunting rifle, it's still fun to shoot now and then, and ammo is still plentiful albeit over priced right now.

There’s some videos on here of some really fast reloads. With some good clips (Czech ones seem to be the best) and practice people can reload them faster than some detachable mags.
At 300 yards the carbine is deadly.

M1 car were the ar when i was growning up everone had one. In my 20s the ars started becoming avaiable still own a carbine everone who shoots it wants to buy it lol

Not sure what the comment about the M1 carbine round making less sound on steel target means; the important factor is whether the round will incapacitate your assailant, and the carbine is effective at that. You might just as well note that the M1 Garand made a louder sound on steel than the 7.62X39; true, but of questionable relevance. As you said, the M1 carbine was designed as a PDW.
Your stripper clip loading technique was flawed, as another commenter explained. The advantage of the internal magazine is that it eliminated the need to manufacture and supply a large number of "disposable" magazines, as well as avoiding magazine-related malfunctions. Admittedly, this is less of an issue today than it was in late WWII.
Get the right clips for the SKS and learn how to do it the way the Russians and Chinese did. They load smooth when you're not using cheap junk.
The best Chinese military sks's were manufactured between 1945 and 1950 the years they melted down war 1 German krump cannons for gun production

One major problem with SKS is that the way the firing pin is designed it’s possible for the gun to go off when dropped, or even when just sending the bolt home.
Same with m1 garand and even the first m16s

I’ve never heard of an SKS going off from dropping it, and if you keep your firing pin clear and oiled then slam fires shouldn’t be much of an issue either

I think m1 carbine vs sks was the wrong comparison from actual tactical use. Should have been sks, ak vs m1 garand and m14. Then m1 carbine m2 carbine Thompson m3 smg vs ppsh41 and pps43. This would have matched actual usage and tactical niches.
@StayMad Losers M14 vs the AK would be better. There's no way you're getting off 30 plus rounds in most gun fight situations, before you have to go into cover and possibly reload. The M1 still holds it's own, if you are good as reloads.
You probably have the bad stripper clips for the SKS, the old surplus ones I have (Yugo?) are FAR easier to load than the normal chinese shitty ones you find all over. I barely press down on the top round and they all go in immediately.

M1 carbine
You should not be hitting the dirt at 300 yards if your M1 sights are set correctly. There are plenty of videos showing solid hits at 250, 300, and even 330 yards, and with enough retained energy to be lethal (around 200 ft/lbs). This is one of the better ones.

Detachable magazines are a force multiplier imo. M1 carbine for me. Stripper clips will get you killed.

Disagree ! M1 is very fast shooting and reliable and quickly reloadable so how is it awful!! I’ve heard of modern police say they keep an m1 in patrol car trunk !! There’s a UA-cam video showing a guy speed shooting a m1 vs an AR! The m1 was faster and more accurate !!
