Does the Rapala Scatterrap Suck? Rapala Original Floating vs Rapala Scatter Rap

  • The scatter rap seems like it is one of Rapala's greatest ideas, but it has some cons. I still think the lure is something that everyone should try out; however, the original floating Rapala still prevails in my opinion.
Comment below which lure you think I should do next in my lure review series. I will not make a video on the lure unless I have used it enough to know whether or not I like it.

Although I can appreciate your "opinion" on the performance of the scatter rap, I find it necessary to chime in and critique your overall assessment as the parameters to which your judging and/or comparing to is fundamentally flawed. If you were comparing apples to apples then that would be one thing, but the fact of the matter is that, quite simply... you're not. One of the baits being a slow rising/floating lure and the other a hunting/search lure. Apples and oranges.
Both have a specific style of presentation and are designed for different conditions/mood the fish are in and hence, each has their place for when they're more productive than the other. There's gonna be days whereas the floating Rapala out performs the scatter rap and then there are gonna be days whereas the scatter rap decisively will outfish the floating rapala, or any other etc. So many variables come into play that determine a baits overall effectiveness besides the size of the lip on the lure or if it tracks just in a straight line. What does all this mean? It means that you're missin out on some killer fishin. You're gonna have to learn the purpose of each lure and use them accordingly in order to get the most effectiveness out of them... before you write them off. Just think of them as tools. Each has a different function/purpose for different jobs.

On a constant retrieve it's fine does what it should, when trying to twitch it like a jerkbait it just wouldn't do what I was used to would spin and flip upside down. Was using a scatter rap 7 cd ayu.
Basically worked fine as long as I used a constant retrieve.

You really need to try the jointed version of the scatter rap and of the prime baitfish of that particular lake. Let me tell you, fish can’t lay off it.

I think they borh have their respective places. The scatter rap is great in warmer water when tbe more erratic retrieve is much more productive to excite following fish and get their instincts to take over just for example. A couple other key points is when trolling so it works and hunts way out and will get noticed especially in a school of bait looking injured and trying to flee. The other main one is new anglers or on days you just want to show em something different. New anglers will love the do nothing but straight retrieve alot and it definitely covers a bit more area . And its just an unusual bait compaired to most . I should add a slow retrieve has the normal swimming action . However your correct that the original floater is far more versatile as a cold water bait , for a very subtle, natural presentation , your far more in control of the bait and exactly what happens or to fish it and steer it near fish or structure as you mentioned . I also really like the original floater and the like for pressured fish . Such a life lime action without any rattles or anything fancy. Even dull colors in situations where its best to look as natural as possible. That subtle roll works all year long , but i find early in the year in colder water its a killer along with the countdown and shad rap . Of course sll summer long , but it really comes back in sped up a bit in fall where it will roll a bit and shimmy . So if i was going to puck one id go original, but but have their time and place. I like the scatter in more open areas and definitely good you pointed out those hooks right away. I will be sure to upgrade mine asap

good vid, everyone's opinion is equal... I think your take on it is a bit focused on some limited scenarios. Rapala never marketed the Scatter Rap as "better" than the original floating minnow, just different. Two are instantly apparent- fishing as a twitch bait on the surface and trolling. I'm a huge fan of the original floating minnow and it was one of the first lures my dad had me using when I was old enough to cast a lure, so well over 40 years ago. I've caught loads of fish on them from size 3 up to size 18 and wouldn't go fishing without a box full of them.... however the scatter rap minnow size 11 is just different than the original minnow. Not better, not worse. As a twitch bait on the surface it can be made to dodge and turn way past 90 degrees in ways the original can't. Whether that matters or not I don't know. I've caught fish doing it with both. Trolling is, in my opinion, where it really shines. Again, not Better, just different. I've caught a LOT of fish trolling in my kayak on the original minnows and also a lot trolling the scatter raps. On a long line on my usual tackle the size 11 scatter rap trolls 9 to 10 feet down, the original 11 gets 6 to 7 feet, that can make a huge difference. The side to side "hunting" action of the scatter rap is different than the original as you explained- in open water or along break lines (weeds, depth, current, etc) it can make a difference. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It has made enough of a difference to me in enough locations with enough species of fish that I always have some in my kit if I think I will do any trolling. In the last couple years I have caught steelhead, lake trout, walleye, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, brown trout, northern pike and musky on the scatter rap minnow... not better than the original, just different. I realize the vid is a couple years old, wonder if your opinion has changed.

I love the scatter rap, but I have problems with the bill breaking off. Does anyone know a good alternative lure like the scatter rap with the same type of bill, but doesn't break as easily? Thank you!

Scatter comes in handy when trolling, the odd sway off track the scatter does helps trigger strikes.

It would make sense if you compared the same lip on different companies. But its two different lures and two different styles. Its likr comparing a big lip to a small lip. Of course one is going to go deeper and move differently, the lip is different. And judging the hooks was pointless, it sounds like you snagged a rock and didn't properly retrieve your lure.
