Joanna sounds (quite) a bit like early Kate Bush in her “Wuthering Heights” era. They’re both highly ambitious, unique female artists who exemplify impeccable musicianship. But Joanna’s lyrics are on another level of brilliance. Her entire discography consists of songs that are of the same calibre as “Emily,” which is crazy when you think about how much work goes into that.

Ys is pronounced 'ees' - it refers to an island

I thought it would a bit challenging for me to listen to the entire piece, but when I stepped away from my desk, relaxed and let the music "in", I was hypnotized. I like this song, but don't have enough experience with this form of music to provide any meaningful comments. You know fellows, a playlist of all your reactions would be very intriguing. I'll get right on it!

Hi Mike, I’ve been doing a playlist, called “into the music” from tracks from this channel. Has to be new tracks and stuff I like. It’s got 24 tracks on it at the moment. I think that’s quite a good return for me, as I have heard a fair bit of music, but for a while the flow of new music coming my way was drying up.

I love this album and also Spout and the bean. I was lucky enough to behold her in 05ish when spout and the bean was released. I tell you she is next level. Played till she had blisters. This song was her encore. Amazing!!

The title of the record, Ys, is pronounced like the word “ease”, it’s the name of a mythical, sunken island off the coast of France. About it, Newsom says:
“I wanted a word that was like throwing a brick at the visual on the front cover; I liked that whenever someone looked at that cover they also had to encounter this short, weird word.”
“ [The title] was the last thing that I chose, after all the songs and the cover art were finished. So none of the songs directly allude to that myth. But the main themes that emerge out of that myth are really close to the themes on the record-- mortality, decadence, an excess of water, isolation, rebirth. The myth is also significant to me because of the way that I encountered it, which relates to one of the huge events the record is about.”

That was very interesting and worth another listen. It reminds me of two of my favourite tracks. To my mind it’s genealogy goes back to Mother of Pearl by Roxy Music, which itself goes back to Visions of Johanna by Dylan. To get to Mother of Pearl, you have the long track, with a hybrid of simple and complex music and rhythms. You have a track with no discernible structure, no verse or chorus, and you have vocals that are expressive in tone, pitch, sound and structure. You also have long form rambling lyrics that hold together as a whole, but allow you to drift off from a single line, and lose yourself in thought. A lot of that goes back to Visions of Johanna. The song structure, long and lack of verse/ chorus. The lyrical play, both long form and individual words and lines. For a new track to live up to these two masterpieces, would take time to know. A very high bar to reach. Simply trying to reach that high is credit worthy.

Ironically, Visions of Johanna is where her parents got her name

I admit I'm about 50% sold on Joanna Newsom's music. Her voice is an acquired taste (that some people never acquire), and I'm past that barrier (I like a lot of what she does with it.) I bought her 4-disc album Have One On Me, which has some tracks I could listen to on repeat (81, the title track), but there are definitely others that are slow and seem quite overbloated; a frequent feature of her songs is setting really lengthy lyrics to a repeating musical motif (which are often good, so that helps.)
Her lyrics have many brilliant individual lines that to me sometimes seem scattershot or extraneous to the song as a whole. (I for one could not tell you what Emily is actually about: it seems like a thrown together mix of an awful lot of European fantasy/folklore motifs; interesting to learn that about her sister and the chorus.) I agree that the arrangements are quite interesting; I've seen live versions of some of her and her band on UA-cam and I think they would be quite entertaining given how incredible they all seem to be with their instruments. (I'd be curious to explore other things Van Dyke Parks has been involved with over the decades on top of those classic Beach Boys albums.)
I guess the appeal for me is I'm glad *somebody* is making music that's baroque and loquacious and ambitious like this. (Interesting to hear about older artists who were working in a comparable vein.)

Emily is about her sister and what Emily taught her (I assume while growing up)

An interesting piece with an interesting Don McLean style story but was far too long for my taste. Sound wise was so like Melanie it was uncanny. All in all an interesting request.
