    Such a beautiful woman with a lovely heart. So very shocking what she endured during her young life. I hope that she had a happy life thereafter, she deserved nothing less. I hope that the other young woman survived, how lovely it would be if they were reunited. Big hugs for you Diane. Your goodness shines through! xx

    One (of the many things) that makes me so angry about the laundries is how the 'church' conveniently viewed women as 'lesser and inferior and wicked' which made it easier for them to shit on them for a profit. The very SAME thing the English did to the Irish for years. This is one of the reasons I walked away from the catholic church and never looked back. This woman is one of the many incredibly brave women that were enslaved at the laundries. Thank you for this story.

      Exactly AND for centuries span the line oh we were looking after them families sent them to us as if they were kind , educating & compassionate. The reality was they used any excuse for slave labour working them all hours & not letting them have any hope . The children were sold or adopted away or died 😢

    Winnie Wallace... Bless you Diane...And the gentleman who helped you find somewhere to stay and gave you that blessed halfcrown. My mother was from Ireland and had a life long hatered of Nuns. I realise now that what she also carried through life was a fear of them..Dealing out cruelty in the name of God, it's hard to believe.What monsters.

    What’s brilliant on this series they show a elderly nun saying “ oh we took these girls in no one payed us “ hiding the fact that the girls worked ludicrous hours & the beatings for nothing eg as she said one mistake . So they had Slave Labour & took away there identity

    I would run too. Great women., she like many had to fight for their freedom but many were left broken. I am so glad that girls and boys get better education today and parents work hard for this. Don't forget the children who have no parents or are in trouble. The power that adults have over child is tremendous. Money talked then and still does. I think the whole Catholic Church should be charged for what they did, They are evil.

    This brought tears to my eyes. The catholic church has committed so many crimes against humanity it is truly mind boggling. It is a wonder to me that anyone goes anywhere near them. My father spent 2 years in one of their orphanages in the early 1930s. I'm glad he didn't remember much of it. He left the church to marry my mother. Best thing he ever did for himself and especially for his kids. We can not forget what was done to these poor women and children. I am Canadian and we are all trying to come to terms with the residential schools that treated our First Nation's people the same way. It is an absolute disgrace. It truly breaks my heart.

      Some of those places had day pupils also , quiet possible that your Mum lived close by or something , the belts , long rulers and canes were common in my time at school , 60s, and 70s , the belts were mainly used in Boy's schools , Waterford Library might be your first port of call for direction to find information about the schools there in your Mum's time , some children were treated ok but others had terrible lives and in particular if they came from poorer , less prominent families, an open mind is necessary when researching because a lot of NGOs have jumped on the band wagon to deamonise that period of our history. Some women educated in Ireland in the past made very good respectable lives for themselves both here and in the UK. Best Wishes on your fact finding mission.

    It still boggles my mind when I think of the Catholic organization as a body for good. There is so much evil tied to it under the guise of goodness. I would like to know who said priest should not marry. ‘It is not good for man to be alone.’ So they go after children. Ha! My mama wanted for me to be a nun!

  • @roberthaworth8991
    @roberthaworth8991 2 місяці тому

    The Church ran these places for profit, not just to defer the expenses of “feeding” and “educating” the young women. In fact the Irish state provided a per capital subsidy sufficient to keep them adequately, but the nuns skimmed so much that they lived like paupers. Every month a priest from the diocese arrived to collect the Church’s cut of revenue from the skim and the laundry contracts; he was typically entertained overnight in the Mother Superior upstairs.

    • @roberthaworth8991
      @roberthaworth8991 2 місяці тому

      They also profited greatly from the mother-and-baby homes they ran, which fed the laundries their human capital. The babies birthed there - and not all survived - were essentially sold to American Catholic couples in Boston and other eastern cities, the Church collecting a hefty “adoption fee” per head. In many cases the new moms were told their baby had died a-borning and had already been buried!

    So I believe in the days that this lady was in the magdalena laundries they frowned upon people who used or write with their left hand. My Aunt who wasn't in the laundries but in school she would have to sit with her left hand tied to her plait all day which was very long. Something to do with thev"Devil", what a load of rubbish. Thankfully this doesn't happen or at least I hope it doesn't.
