For the record, the most prominent thing that was wrong with Riko when she was dying is that her airway was obstructed by blood. That's why Reg breathing into her fixed that issue, and why she was turning gray, because she literally couldn't breath
A “Hollow” is just what the translators decided to use as a convenient term, IMO. In Japanese, Nanachi says “narehate” 成れ果て which means something like, “the dregs,” or “a shadow /remains of what was,” etc. It’s hard to define, but just think of it as a survivor of the harshness of the Abyss. It doesn’t mean it’s a specific race or anything, if that is what you were thinking.
Someone (can’t remember who) explained it was a play on the phrase “nare no hate” which means a shadow of one’s former self. I don’t think “narehate” is an actual word in Japanese. Perhaps we both heard the same thing at one point but you forgot…
@@Vulpolox I speak Japanese, so I was interpreting the phrase. It’s most likely a made up word, but I don’t read manga, so I didn’t know what the author specifically meant. Now that I’ve seen the second season, I have a better idea of what the narehate/Hollows are.
I never get tired of watching people reacting to this episode (and of watching this episode myself). Even after watching the anime twice and watching multiple reactions, that scene always shocks me. Such a good show
I guess one good thing to come out of this is that because reg hesitated to cut off the arm by the time nanachi showed up it was still attached thus can still be fixed.
Since I watched Episode 10, I just realized that this anime is not for children. Even for those who just know, they will get mentally. Because in this episode I was almost scared to death when I saw Riko's near state ****, TONIKAKU I CAN'T BELIEVE CLAUSE THIS EPISODE almost made my heart drop 🫀
Great reaction! This episode was when this anime went from cute adventure anime to Lovecraftian horror. Just wait until the finale. I'll be looking forward to it.
The series was Lovecraftian from the start. People inexplicably drawn to a large, mysterious pit that's extremely deadly, has a curse, and has an unknown depth? Forces way outside of our understanding? That's textbook Lovecraft.
I didn't cry tears, but I almost cried blood. Seriously though, my reaction to this episode was nearly the same as the one I had when I almost sliced my finger off with a knife by mistake. I also had the same reaction when stepping on LEGO, that might be more relatable.
Fu -fu -fu... get the tissues ready... FINALLY Nanachi shows up after seeing her for the longest time in the OP. I probably cried when Riko was losing it and Reg couldn't function. I won't go into what I think a Hollow is because it's just explained later. I still don't know where we will be able to watch Season 2 in America (legally). Wish Amazon would post the third movie just to let us know they still have it. The next three episodes and movie are amazing.
10:33 Oh I thought she meant the UMBRELLA was made to recoil against anything larger than itself, so if the creature had lunged at them head on it would've been knocked back? But the creature instead attacked using its spines, which were smaller than the umbrella and thus the umbrella didn't activate to protect them.
"Aren't his feet also metal?" Yeah. He has full tactile senses on all his metallic parts. Why does everyone just blank out on absolutely everything we've seen and just assume Reg simply has prosthetic limbs? He's knifeproof and fireproof, he has incredibly heightened senses, he was _energized_ by being shocked in _an electric chair_ and drained enough power from it to knock out the power grid to the entire district, and when Riko first found him _he wasn't breathing and she could tell just from the consistency of his skin that he wasn't human._ "Nobody has ever mentioned what a Hollow is." Lyza's notes mentioned that the Human-Looking Silhouette didn't appear to be one. But "Hollow" is just what the localizers call them and it gives the wrong impression. They're called Narehate in Japanese, a contraction of the phrase "nare no hate" which has the approximate meaning of "what remains after a lot of changes" (the literal translation of it is "end of becoming"). Never ask anyone what they think of Nanachi. Nanachi simps are _actually_ delusional, convincing themselves of fake reasons to like the other characters less.
In her notes, Liza mentions that Reg does not look like a hollow. I hope I remember that correctly. Are you going to watch the movie, Dawn of the deep soul? It's the direct continuation of the story and it is very good. You need to watch it first if you decide to watch season two.

I can respect that decision. It's a lot better than the people who can't handle the dark stuff like the gore or the emotional trauma, keep watching, and then bitch about it.
Personally I liked that Riko suffered the consequences of her actions but when it got serious with her on the brink of death I straight up enjoyed so much and said "That's what you get you stupid kid" :V
Call me fucked up, Riko is super annoying imo and laughed when she got hit. What happens when you keep running too far ahead or touching things you're not supposed to lol

A hollow was actually mentioned before I think in lyza notes. She said the humanoid figure she saw didn't seem to be a hollow.
