    I feel the biggest problem with Shonen Jump and the new series they put out there is just how impatient they are. I get that they want new, popular series that'll bring in more and more people, but it feels like they're incapable of letting the newbies develop at their own pace. Believe it or not, a lot of stories don't have the most exciting of beginnings. Most take a while to lay out the rules of the world, the characters, and the type of story they want to tell.

      no they've always been like that. you only say that now because of Jump + Being accessible and social media.
      TOC and sales are important being in the top 10 in the TOC for a series that is new is a huge deal and maintaining that spot is also huge.

      AoT, JJK, and MHA are no where near the likes of the Big 3. AoT held its own but MHA and JJK both suffered from burn out and are pretty mid. If they are indication of the future of manga/anime theeen we're in for a future of mid.

      @@jase276 I mean JJK has 90 million copies sold over 6 years with volume 26 releasing soon. For example Bleach at 26 volumes only had 39 million sold. I can't find numbers for Naruto which would be a better indicator though since it was way more popular than Bleach. One Piece averages 4.89 mil per volume so that would = 126 mil at 26 volumes and that's One Piece, the best selling manga ever. So idk I think the newer manga like JJK/MHA and the like are all fine and doing exceptionally well still. Manga sales in general have fallen in recent years so that also might explain it.
      I think you're just experiencing the online meme hate train that comes for every big series eventually. Because the numbers really say otherwise. Even if people say those series are "mid" it really seems like its just a vocal minority online stirring the pot and trying to be hipsters for hating on the current big series.

    After Dragon Ball ended Togashi was given a contract where he had to make a battle Shonen for the magazine but he had more creative freedom and was allowed more frequent hiatuses, that’s how HxH was born.
    With so many major titles ending in WSJ, I believe management is giving the author of Demon Slayer a similar deal and they’re making sure the series is extremely high quality which is why we haven’t heard anything yet.

      Hot take, Demon Slayer's manga was mid. It got some buzz, sure but no one really cared until ufotable did the anime. It's the ANIME that blew up not only in Japan but the entire world. And let me tell you, as we're getting down the wire in the anime, the shortcomings of the manga are surely easy to notice. So, banking on the author of Demon Slayer will not create another HxH effect. But, hey, i'd love to be proven wrong. I've been reading manga since the Big 3 and it looks like everyone, Shonen Jump included, wants their manga to be just as big and last just as long but a lot of these new mangaka obviously can't hang long enough and burn out.

      This is wrong. Togashi after Yu Yu Hakusho, and after Dragon Ball ending, wrote Level E. From ending of 1995 to 1997.
      Hunter x Hunter was done 1 year after Level E.
      About the magazine after Dragon Ball. The biggest series was a Sport anime, Slam Dunk. That unfortunately ended 1 year later.
      After that the best series was Rurouni Kenshin(Samurai X).
      The biggest battle shonen after Dragon Ball, and right when One Piece started were:
      Rurouni Kenshin(Samurai X)
      Hareluya Boys II
      Jojo's Bizarre Adventure(Yes at this time the series was still running in Weekly shonen Jump)
      Rokudenashi Blues
      Dragon Quest
      Hell Teacher Nube
      Ninku
      Hoshin Engin
      Yu-Gi-Oh
      Bastard!!!
      So it was still full of famous Battle Shonen, still nothing as popular as Dragon Ball.

    I’ll say this, even if One piece ends, there won’t be another long running series like One Piece for a very long time. One piece is a unique series that happens to be on going for years because of a one of a kind author dedication to keep giving more stories to tell about this world he created. It’s rare to find another author like Oda, like catching lighting in a bottle. We might never get another long running and amazing series like One piece in our life time but Shonen Jump will keep going forward with new series. When Fist of the North Star end, Shonen Jump kept moving forward. When Dragon Ball end, Shonen Jump kept going forward. When Bleach and Naruto end, Shonen jump kept moving forward. Shonen jump will always learn to move on from popular series and focus on the future to keep investing on new original series. Whether those series are here for a short time or a very long time.

      I don't think there will ever be another shonen like One Piece again. One Piece has been around for so long that other shonen that it inspired have started and ended or are wrapping up soon, the industry is changing. The large majority of recent manga and anime are more short form or don't have the same scope that Oda does with his series. It's not realistic to expect another series like One Piece because Oda is simply not human. I'm not saying series of the same quality will never come out again, but something with the same scope and lifespan as One Piece is something that only comes around once in a blue moon

    I don't like betting on Shonen Jump dying, but I think it's just in a creative drought stage. Shonen Jump needs longform series more than anything else, and there's not a lot of people out there as dedicated as the likes of Eichiro Oda. Look at how many series have come and gone since One Piece started, it's their golden goose and nobody is coming close to the level of love and dedication he has for his work. Either Jump needs to change or another prodigy comes along, since I'm pretty sure the Japanese manga industry is gruelling. I'm never going to pretend that we're in a creative drought, people will always come out with great ideas that sell well. But the concepts people come up with might not be suited for longform series like the average Shonen manga anymore

Idk much about the magazine itself but Perhaps if shonen jump will add a foreign section of their magazine, they can market creators from other countries bc I’ve seen a lot of non Japanese people that are making really good looking manga and I think it would be really cool to see the cultures collide and work together to spread their love for manga

    • @kikorushii
      @kikorushii 3 місяці тому

      That’s interesting! I actually prefer that only Japanese manga are featured. I like that it’s their own thing, I don’t think I’d be nice if they added a foreign section. That’s weird, you can make a comic and if they like it they might adapt it like solo leveling which is originally a manhwa (Korean). Also, I suggest learning Japanese and you can then enter awards for manga and stuff and you might get recognized by shonen jump + you’ll get an editor and Tada! And it doesn’t have to be shonen jump, there are many other publishers!

  • @MAYUTHEUNDEAD
    @MAYUTHEUNDEAD 6 місяців тому +10

    people really shouldn't talk on topics they're not very informed on, Jump always goes through phases like this where really popular series end, and a majority of remaining series in the magazine aren't as well known simply because they don't have an anime yet. (Sakamoto Days, Witch Watch, Akanebanashi, etc) not to mention Kagurabachi which is already popular.
    Jump isn't "dying", and I'm tired of this same recycled debate. If there is one thing Shonen Jump is good at, it's producing megahits. That's why it's one of the most competitive manga magazines out there, they always axe series as a path for those mangaka to grow, try again with something better in the future, and to make room for another potential hit. Jump wasn't "dying" when megahits like Slam Dunk or Yu Yu Hakusho ended. Or when Naruto and Bleach ended.
    They've been doing this for decades. Nothing has changed, the only difference is that now the whole magazine is easily accessible to the western audience, making more people aware of all the lesser known titles that have always been in the magazine alongside the popular ones (this has always been the case)
    The only difference here is general awareness. Now more people actually know about all of these other smaller titles in the lineup, so you feel like the roster is lackluster.
    But there lies the main problem, you are placing too much value in popularity. If everyone waited for a series to get established as a popular hit first before jumping in to read it, then none of the manga would ever get the chance to become popular, because no one would be reading them. Just read the manga if it interests you. Being scared of getting attached to a series that might end prematurely is silly because there are tons of axed series that are still worth reading despite having shorter runs. Some axed manga are worth reading for the art alone or witnessing the growth of the mangaka when they return with another work. Everything in the magazine has potential for growth. Witch Watch for example has had extremely subtle long-term growth, has reached over a hundred chapters, and I can see it easily being the spiritual successor to Gintama.
    Just trust the process. Weekly Shonen Jump is the most popular manga magazine in the world for a reason.

    Regarding bringing back older artist with successful older series: They already did, they just got axed like the others with no special treatment. Example in no particular order:
    Naruto -> Samurai 8 (axed)
    To-Love-Ru -> Ayakashi Triangle (Ended)
    Assasination Classroom -> Elusive Samurai (ongoing)
    Hell's Paradise -> Ayashimon (axed)
    Toriko -> Build King (axed)
    Hinomaru Sumo -> Martial Master Asumi (axed)
    Samon the Summoner (arguable if its successful but returning author)-> Super Psychic Policeman Chojo (ongoing)
    Beelzebub -> Hungry Marie (axed)
    Shokugeki no Soma -> Tenmaku Cinema (axed)
    Takopi Original Sin -> Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins (Ended)
    Sket Dance -> Witch Watch (ongoing)
    Nurarihyon -> Yui Kamiyo Let Loose (axed)
    There's also successful/failed author from Weekly Shonen Jump finding themselves on Jump+, so they aren't exactly squandering them. I'd imagine past long running author would rather pass off they work to the next illustrator like Dragon Ball and Naruto since I'd imagine their time with the job isn't exactly to be envied for with how much injury they got. It has since been better with author taking breaks and posting when they want. I'd say that the fix Shonen Jump is going for is with Jump+.
    They can serialize more series without taking printing spaces, authors have more leniency, they can experiment with weird ideas, and more importantly they are dipping their toes in international audience. There's even initiative with Manga Plus Creators where people worldwide can get a chance to post their work and get serialized in the magazine.

    I wanna recommend that they work with Viz Media(since Shueisha owns them) to get American authors, fans of their manga & magazine, to make manga for them that can be licensed for Shonen Jump, so they have that front page look.

Akane-banashi blowing up especially. Nue’s Exorcist & Kagurabachi being brand new and selling well looking good for Those two. Blue Box another big series always being at the top of TOC.
    And ultimately the bigger fact to debunk your whole video “and all like this by similar UA-camrs ”. Jumps biggest competition, weekly shounen magazine’s series sales pale in comparison and not even hitting half of the sales numbers of jump. Jump is in no way in any trouble.

Also they need to pick stories that a fresh, and have main characters that aren’t the same stereotypes. The promise never land is a incredible example as the manga did a unique spin on a story that’s been already told.

    One thing I wanna note shonen isn’t a genre it’s a demographic. And while WSJ is know for their battle manga. I think if they allow new manga with different genres to actually thrive and not be axe than they should be fine and keep on thriving. Also I believe they shouldn’t do weekly for one chapter since that’s so bad for the manga artist mental health. Two weeks or even a month wouldn’t be a bad idea especially since people are making shorter series now and not 300+ chapters long running stories.

    [To any noobs reading this]
    You know, as someone who writes and draws fiction (not sure what kind yet, but I do) the best way to start a story is with narration. Regardless of what CinemaBin tells you, weaving an explanation into the story seamlessly with just dialogue, and without it becoming bloated exposition, takes serious creativity, so simple narration here and there allows for explanation of points that can't be shown properly with visuals. Of course, (and I don't have to tell you this if you write manga instead of novels) narration should be used in moderation. Over-explanation is boring. Just because some things are hard to convey without words, doesn't mean that _everything_ should be conveyed with words. If someone feels sad or angry, and they're not some emotionless robot, then show it on their face, or have them express it with body language. Don't tell us someone's mad unless they can't show it in any way. Imagination and free interpretation leads to readers making theories and discussion when done right, while forcefeeding your audience with a giant wall of text will scare them off. Attack names are actually exempt from this rule since giving similar or confusing attacks names helps to give the readers some idea of what the attacker is doing to the attackee(s), while differentiating between the moves that are different in execution or effect. A perfect example is the difference between Monkey D Luffy's various attacks, which at first glance are just him punching really fast and hard. To differentiate between different speeds and sizes of punches, kicks and such, Luffy uses specific tags for when he puts a twist or boost to his normal moveset. (Gear second attacks have the "Jet" tag added as they are significantly faster than his normal ones.) Note that you don't necessarily need attack names if your character isn't the type to yell their attacks with every swing. Having them move smoothly and silently through strings of attacks can still be enough if done right. It can also allow dialogue during battle without interruption if you want your characters to do that.
    Romance writers this section is for you. If you plan of them meeting first, then have the relationship build up and reach a satisfying conclusion. None of that cliffhanger bullshit. No sane person wants to read a 100+ chapter teasefest which ends exactly where it started. If you don't feel like MC and FeMC should get together at the end, then at least have them grow as characters so that the readers feel like something was accomplished instead of like they wasted their time on you.
    Now before I go, one more thing.
    😊GANBARE! DO YOUR BEST!😊

      Jjk is ending this year
      Black clover ending this year
      That only leaves one piece, sakamoto days & kagura bachi
      Sakamoto days isn’t that popular, and the anime won’t dramatically change that
      Kagurabachi has a chance,
      Dandadan is trash
      Csm fell off
      For the sake of it let’s say kagurabachi & sakamoto days takes off
      That leaves op, KB & SD
      Those 2 series(KB & SD) cannot take up the hype/income of Only JJK, let alone adding in mha
      Shonen jump is 1000% going to lose money, and there’s nothing they can do about it, they honestly did this to themselves by trying to keep up that same bs formula (underdog mc with mid powers who relies on asspull power ups & power of friendship) also the antagonists having super op powers, and having them be defeated essentially the same way by the protagonists, that has bit shonen jump in the butt, why do you think the newer shonen titles have changed to be more like seinen(darker, more maturity, etc etc)

      @@Joshua_N-A I’ve heard conflicting things about whether he came back or not. If he’s really writing for the series or only over-seeing Boruto. A lot of fans have noted how different Boruto even in its current form is different to when Kishimoto was writing. I’ve also heard the book cover credits haven’t changed to reflect Kishimoto is writing again (supposedly). How much involvement does Kishimoto have and is this just a case of slapping his name on Boruto because the series was struggling without Kishimoto and apparently Kishimoto’s new works weren’t doing well either. So his plan to move on didn’t go as well. There are cases where a creator of a franchise or series will be credited, but have little to no involvement in a project. Sometimes creators will like a fanfic so much they’ll allow it to be published and then add their name because, technically, it is their franchise still, even if the work got to be officially published, but is written by someone else. There’s all sorts of ways for a creator to be credited, but have suspect involvement in a project. I do know Kishimoto wasn’t interested in continuing Naruto. That’s why Kodochi was writing Boruto in the beginning. I also read Kishimoto’s supposed return was more recent than that. Only since a year ago. Sometime in ‘22. At best, I’ve heard Kishimoto is in a supervisory role in Boruto currently. It also sounds like Kishimoto is more interested in a live action Naruto than anything related to Boruto.

    I'm not too concerned about the wsj after One Piece, JJK, and MHA ending. A lot of long running series in the mag have ended, even ones we never heard of in the west and they kept on going. I think Kagurabachi has a high chance of being wsj's next big thing but we're gonna need to wait and see. It could also be Sakamoto Days, but i feel like its nearing its end. I thought Mashle would be it, but it ended last year. And Kaiju No. 8 is on in Jump+ so i dont know if it counts.

    Have you seen what those weekly serials do to those poor mangaka? Pure stress, weekly performance reviews, contracted staff, limited artistic control, poor working conditions, all based on popularity and the ability for your fans to buy merchandise and individual volumes to boost your brand and significance worldwide.

    Egghead island started in the last QTR of 2022 if I’m recalling correctly & it’s still not done 😅 tbh I don’t think One Piece is going to hit that 5 year prediction Oda previously mentioned

    There is no problem. This is how jump has always been. One Piece, Naruto DBZ, Saiki K (yes he counts too) are all crazy exceptions that are able to run longer than 5 years.
    If you run longer than 5 years youre basically part of the hall of fame. And I think theres like less than 30mangas that achieved that in Weekly sjonen jump

    Idk about Shonen Jump ending just cause one piece ends and there not being any long term series out. There’s still plenty of shorter series. I guarantee Frieren is going to start selling a lot more with how popular the show has been. It might last a long time, too. There’s so much they can do with that world. Chainsaw man is still going strong with being the 5th best selling manga series last year. Blue lock was the best selling last year and that’s still going. Shonen jump won’t end. It’s just the long series. And who knows, maybe someone will come out with a series soon that stays a long time.

    The magazine has always axed stories. That's nothing new. I don't think anything will happen to the magazine. They'll find other series. Will they be as long as the big 3 or DB? Probably not, but those types of hits don't happen every day. Most battle franchises only go for about 100 episodes or however many chapters that is in manga form. Most franchises aren't going to go for as long as those heavy hitters did. 15 years of a franchise is a big ask. Most of them aren't going to be One Piece which I'm almost certain will still be running even when I'm an old lady. And if it does happen to end. I'm sure The One Piece will still be continuing the story.
