Keep doing what you’re doing! I’ll be 37 years old in October and I grew up with the NES and super Nintendo. I have a very similar entertainment system in my office/game room. I love the nostalgia. If this makes you happy and you’re not hurting anyone, then keep it up. I love your channel! :-)

Tyler, great job always! Our community is why I collect as well. There is just something about everyone of us. The stories we get along the way. Getting to tell them, and hearing those of other's. Thank you for this.

In early 2000’s I started collecting retro games, everything was cheaper then. By 2012 I had a huge collection. And one day I decided I needed to grow up, after all I was not playing all these games. So I sold just about everything. I kept my modern consoles and games. But I felt empty a little because I enjoyed collecting so much. But in 2016 when the NES classic came out, it sparked my interest again. So I started collecting again starting with NES. But this time I started buying games I would actually play, plus games I had when I was a kid. Now I have no where near the games I had back then, but I seem to enjoy my collection more now. I’ll never sell these games again. Plus as time went on these games are a lot more money to buy now. So I’m going to keep what I have and buy games here and there that I’m going to play. I enjoy it much more now then buying games just to buy them and have them on a shelf.

I was born in 1980 so my fondest memories were playing Atari with my brothers and going to my cousins’ house to play C64. But I recently found Lost Ark Video Games in Greensboro, NC and bought a Sega console and NHL 94, Madden 95 and NBA Live 95. My brothers and cousins would have tournaments in the mid 90s playing these three games. So going back to play them, the gameplay still stands the test of time. You’re right, nostalgia is powerful. I wouldn’t say I’m trying to relive my past, but I do long for simpler times when we weren’t face down down in our phones and actually present when spending time with family and friends.

    I find it historically important.
My parents sold my entire collection off while I served in the Navy, now I'm getting those game titles back.

Interesting enough while serving, on my first deployment I used a Sega Nomad and played Might and Magic II. Also used the N64 with Conkers Bad Fur Day, and the Sega Dreamcast sport's edition Worms Armageddon. But my absolute favorite pastime was emulating the game's I owned on the Nintendo running lines of assembly code finding codes to improve the performance it was run on a Gateway Solo 1150cl still have it. Bought another PC with better emulation performance for my second deployment. Thankfully I had these game's so that the deployment wasn't such a burden.

Awesome rare find would be the Reality Quest The Glove N64, just recently had I found that there's a PlayStation version which I had to own. Since I'm a Disabled American Veteran of Foreign Wars, this controller holds new meaning, you can play N64 & PlayStation one handed, for those missing a limb this becomes paramount. I'm forever grateful that these were even made.

I am a big gamer as well and have NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Color, Nintendo DS, Nintendos 2DS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Nintendo GameCude and possibly other consoles. I play them whenever I need those great memories when I was a kid and they never get old, just limited edition.
I tell people I am half jock/half nerd because that is who I am.
Channels like this, Cinemassacre, NESAddict and so many others make me realize that being a gamer IS wonderful (I knew it in the beginning, I just wanted to know that I wasn't alone and I know that I am not alone).
This is a great video and thanks for sharing, man.

I’m an absolute fan of physical copies! I collect 80’s and 90s action movies which is my nostalgia. 80s & 90s movie posters and collectibles. NES is apart of my childhood too which is why I’m subbed to your channel. It’s nostalgia for me!
I don’t care what other people think cause it’s personal to me. It’s my art. I would absolutely have an NES nostalgia rec room with all physical copies of games if I didn’t have my 80s action movies.
All of our funnest memories are from playing games as kids. It was the simplest of times. You can’t replicate that feeling. We try our best with nostalgia. It works as best it can.
Thank you for the video! I totally felt your feelings. I get it, too. I get it too. Following you on Twitter now, man.

I agree, you don't really NEED any of it, I'm 42 & I'm having an absolute blast collecting now what I never could collect back in the day. I don't care what anyone says, I've been on this trip since 2001 and now in 2019 I'm seeing all this "retro culture". Went to Target store, saw hats and merch on the classic NES, LOTS of ppl are into this. I don't think it was worth a video. I had spent last 3 years studying electronic music production, every waking hour I wasn't working or sleeping but now I'm really on this trip. Go for it. It makes you happy. I thinking you get to wrapped up in emotions. I don't want to play modern gaming, nor do I. There's a big community nowadays & you're a part of it! Be proud!

Man, I'm in the same boat too. I love collecting physical copies of games that I love, either ones that I've newly stumbled across, or games I grew up with loving. To me, having things like that is just the equivalent of having sports memorabilia! Same with just stopping into my local retro gaming store; it's just nice knowing there are other like-minded people out in the world that share the same interests.

Amen, I think it brings you back to a simpler time in life where you didn't have the worries and stress that adult life comes with. And it's no different than someone who has a private library of books or a giant train set, gun collection, or a huge train set. I definitely think it's a hobby as well as a passion that you can share, talk about, or keep for yourself to take the edge and worry out of life, great vid and I think everyone starts out that way before you realize you're a collector and every collector has moments like that to where there's no answer to but to assess and recenter one's self😁

Yes mate!! For people like you and me we do need these games! They are memories, experiences, emotions and something that we can pass down to our kids!
Not many things people collect can be passed down to the next generation and be enjoyed the same way. Video games are the most advanced form of art in my opinion and it is still very much in its infancy. To be a part of this culture is something special!
Great video mate, I enjoyed seeing a different style of video!
Hope you have a great time at the con!!

Awesome video! Not too long after I started collecting I started to doubt why I was doing it, but then I realized I was chasing an experience that I could never have again, no matter how much I played these games and enjoyed them, it never quite felt like that first experience playing it as a kid, but once I began to look at them as physical trips down memory lane and the things that defined my childhood, I never looked back, and I have never felt anything buy joy looking at these shelves full of games.

You summed up exactly how I feel about the NEED vs. WANT, the more nostalgia and memories I have with something the more I am going to want to hold onto it. As per collecting, if you still enjoy doing it and still have nostalgia and/or building new memories and are not hurting anyone, continue doing it, why not?

Great video! I think for me, having and being able to still play retro games takes me back to a much simpler time in life. You're a kid, you have no major responsibility, no bills, no job, etc. Everything seemed so carefree back then. I'm 34 and I have a 7 year old son who has become a HUGE fan of Mario and new and retro Mario games. It's nice to play a retro game and kind of get lost for a little while remembering the simple times as a kid.

  • @Mparker394
    @Mparker394 5 років тому

It’s the nostalgia. I lost my mom two years ago, and playing old games often brings back memories of my childhood, which includes some really good memories of Christmas or birthdays, which naturally include memories of family. When the switch released the SNES online, turning it on took me immediately back to the Christmas that I got a SNES. I remember my mom standing at my bedroom door, while I was playing Mario World, and asking me if I was happy with my Christmas present. Then, while she had ZERO interest in video games, she sat down and watched me play for a bit. I said all of that to say this: I play old games because they help me connect to a time that is long gone. They’re almost a therapy. When life is tough (work, marriage, three small children) you can tap into a piece of your childhood , when the world was a much simpler place.
    That’s my $0.02.
On another topic, when can we expect a video on ALTTP?

  • @alexgrant1415

Such a well done video as usual, really hit home on alot of the things you were saying. I got out of retro collecting because once GameStop started up with it the market where I'm from got killed badly. But that being said I still love classics and play them on my retro pie. Definitely know the feeling of what you mean though Tyler , sometimes the music to a game or just seeing the artwork of a game can definitely bring you back to childhood days for sure. You've got something special with you channel and with how you pass on the knowledge of the old-school to your kids, nothing but respect and admiration for you for that. One day I hope to have kids to be able to share my nostalgia and hobbies with. 🤘🏼💯

Some of my fondest memories come from those pre internet days. Playing games that at the time seem so big and mysterious because you couldnt look up whatever you wanted to on you pc or phone. Multiplayer meant someone beside you playing along and not a stranger hollering over a mic nonsense. We were younger and the world seemed less complicated than it does now being an adult. Those games bring us back to a simpler time and place kind of like listening to an old song.

The only true magic in the world is childhood... You are justified in preserving it in any way you can. The sadness you feel is simply what you feel when you tap into it and there is nothing wrong with that. It's a beautiful feeling that turns into Joy when you can share it with a like mind. Also your kids will inherit it all and there is enormous value in that.

Thanks for sharing your perspective, it's nice to hear you ,as cheesy as it may sound; speak from the heart. I dug out my childhood nes about 6 years ago, hooked it up, and played with my kids. I started collecting then, unapologetically ( I've always had a sense of guilt before). Now I've amassed a reasonable collection and I've learned to not just buy everything. But there's still a struggle or pressure from others I guess. I loved how you mentioned that it's not much different than collecting stamps or baseball cards. This is a statement that I often make to people who don't think collecting retro games is a valid pursuit . Quite often I feel judged for my passion, even by family members. Some people can't accept that, although my interests don't align with theirs, they are still just as relevant. Again, thanks for the upload, sorry for the rant, lol

Great video! I got into retro gaming 10 years ago. I bought a ton of NES and SNES games. I think not only was it apart of my childhood, but it takes me back to a simpler time. A time when I didn’t have bills, a job, worries. A time where I could spend all day playing video games without a careen the world. The collecting didn’t last long though. With a full time job and other adult responsibilities, the games got put in a box and never touched again.

Loved watching your channel with you and involving your kids as i have two boys, 8 and 6 and really enjoyed seeing you involve your family in to your hobby, much like i try to do. I also grew up with a Gensis/CD/32x and 3DO after we had moved on from the NES. Just many parallels that i shared with you. Hoping we could start seeing some new videos come out again and if you feel like you've hit a lot of what you wanted to with the NES, maybe talk about your time or games with the Genesis/CD/32x or 3DO. Either way, hoping all is well with you and your family.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings on nostalgia :).
I used to collect complete copies of the video games that I played over the years and even went so far as acquiring the Japanese and European versions of them in the same form. However, I have traded the majority of those titles at this stage of my life and chose to keep the ones that are closest to my heart.
It has been quite a process to sort out what to keep and what to give or trade away, but I am glad with what I still have :).
Memories alone can ultimately be good enough, especially if the video games in question won't see any playing time after all.
That being said, I will ALWAYS be a video gamer!

I got all teary eyed watching this video. Not ashamed to admit it. This has been a question i have been asking myself for a few years now. I'm 40 years old. I'm apart of that millennial generation the baby boomers like to knock. Over the years i have experienced political and social setbacks, financial issues, loss of jobs, and relationship failures. Regardless gaming has always been there for me. Even back in the 80s when my parents argued and my home was hostile gaming was my escape and still is to this day.
A lot of us Millennial's fall back on Nostalgia to remind us of better times. It's a trait we all suffer from i guess. 2 years ago i attended Pax West in Seattle. I remember seeing a woman tear up and get emotional because she saw a vendor had a copy of Duck Tales in Box for the NES. Long story short her Dad had past a few years ago from cancer and her childhood memory was playing Ducktales while sitting on her daddy lap.
From the collection aspect i only collect what i like and what I can. Space is a issue for me. But i don't knock anyone who collects on a Grand Scale Level. It can be a hobby for some. Therapy for others.
Great Vid and Channel. I look forward to more of your videos.

Hey, just wanted to put my two cents in. When I was a kid, me and my grandpa would play all kinds of games together. After he retired and started playing video games. We would call each other just to share tips to super Mario world and super punch out. Then he passed away in 1995. When you he died I remember being a crushed little kid. I ended up with his Super Nintendo games and super scope, which I did not use very much lol. I got older and stopped playing video games, then in 2010 my grandmother was cleaning her attic out and found his nes and genesis. The nes has castlevania in it, and there was a couple genesis games to boot. Next my aunt found her old nes and snes stuff and gave them to me. It was an embarrassment of riches of memories and connecting to my childhood. It became a new hobby that was really great with helping my depression when those times come up. I don’t know, sometimes I do feel silly, but really I’m happy to have these things and I plan on passing them down in my family when I’m gone. Whatever happens, retro gaming is symbolizes something positive in my life and in my family.

Don't be afraid to be who you are. I am big into retro gaming as well. My father has told me that ever since I was 3 years old I would reach for arcade machines even though I had no idea what I was doing at the time.
As such my first game system came before the Atari. It was a Magnavox Odyssey 2. I'm dating myself here. So, I'll go ahead and say it. I'm 37 years old.
After the Odyssey I was given an Atari 2600, from there it went to the Sega Master System (yes I said Master System), the NES, the Super Nintendo, Genesis, and so on. Now I own both the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
Part of my love for gaming stems from the fact that even for a little while, when I'm on the console, I can forget about my troubles while I'm immersed in the game. This is especially true with older games as they bring back a bit of nostalgia. Even with the power and glitz of the new consoles, I had a buddy who would come over once a week and play retro games as we wanted to remember a time when games were about challenge and not overly reliant on graphics.
Since those days, I have acquired a Sega CD that was given to me by a gentleman at the flea market who had a ton of overstock from his pawnshop. I also got the 32x when retailers were having fire sales trying to get rid of stock. The new games are great, but they lack the challenge and memories of retro games.

I love collecting, and a big part of it is playing with family and all the memories from the past. Some games are very special to me. One christmas I got a game and years later I learned that my Grandmother skipped meals to be able to afford the game. I will never sell it.

So much truth in this video! Part of it for me is similar to my view of “old” music that I grew up with: the young adult in me balks at the idea that my beloved memories will be replaced with the new fangled stuff! Seems like when the obsolete games and consoles are dismissed, it’s a dismissal of my personal experience with them!
I guess every generation pushes back against the new one as it loathes the feeling of being replaced or dismissed!
The best we can do is share the memories with our kids and hope they feel the attachment as we did! I’ve bonded with my niece over the old Mario games and hope it’s something she’ll always remember!
However I’m adamant about the popular music these days -they don’t do it like they used to ! 😏

I think with nostalgia we tend to remember the good times so playing an old game or buying an old toy or even reading an old magazine takes us back in time. Usually to when things were more simple and we didn't have to worry about adult responsibilities. As human beings we tend to hate change and we want things to stay the same as we remember them but unfortunately life doesn't work that way. People die, friends move to another state, we start new jobs, and sometimes even a family.
I think the reason we collect is again due to nostalgia and to fill a void. We tend to buy games we had as a child and buy games we always wanted as a birthday or Christmas gift but our parents always said that dreaded word. "No". Now that we are adults and have our own money, we can buy whatever game or toy we wanted. Unfortunately because we have our own money means it's very easy for us to become addicted to buying stuff we don't need. Again filling in that void whether we realize it our not.
While I collect a little bit of everything, I have a true passion for NES. It was my first and only console that I had all the way up until Christmas 1994 when I finally got a SNES bundled with Super Mario All-Stars. Since I was only allowed to have one system, I had to get rid of the NES. It was sad but at the time everyone had moved on to 16-bit consoles so I guess it was the right thing to do. Then around 2001 I got hit hard with the nostalgia bug so I decided to buy a NES complete in the box on ebay for I want to say less than $50 and some CIB NES games from my local games store for $5 each. That's pretty much how retro collecting started for me.
So do I need all of these old games? No, but they keep me company like an old friend from the past.

As kids we are in such a hurry to grow up and then once we get older and time seems to be speeding by, it causes us to reflect back on our childhood and hopefully it was a good one like mine was. Now that I am 40 I think back to my youth and I wonder "where the hell did the time go?" Time sees to go by so slowly when we are kids and then all of a sudden it's gone.

Well I’m glad I’m not the only one experiencing this roller coaster! I have the same exact feelings, I got a family of my own and have a lil girl. A lot of times I feel like I’m wasting my money but it makes it worth it when I hear my daughter humming lost woods from ocarina of time or watching her beat her cousins in Wii bowling, something she would never had experienced if I never got into retro game collecting. I’ll also have a memory of us beating or first game together… power rangers samurai on the Wii!

Not a retro gamer in particular, but a PC gamer (including emulation).
I look at every game I buy as an investment, not a purchase. I see hoarding games as a good value of my money because every game has the potential to pull me in and capture 100 hours of my time, if it's really good. Some of those games are so good that even if they only last a dozen or so hours, they will pull you back for repeated playthroughs due to the sheer quality of the product -- maybe the gameplay mechanics are really fun or its got a story that rivals some Hollywood movies (or even novels if they're really wordy games). Any one of those 500 games you have bought that you haven't played can change your life just as well as they could turn out to be duds, and that's the beauty of having all that choice of what to play. You have a selection of entertainment that can last you a lifetime.
I think the 'buyer's remorse' sets in when you grow up and realize that there's nothing inherently magical about owning a lot of games. That part will never come back, because games have simply never been less elusive and easier to get than they are now. Think back to when you were a kid, how often did you get a new game? If your parents weren't gamers (like most people), odds are you were probably lucky to get a new game every few months. Having to wait so long to buy a new game built up anticipation and excitement that was unique to that time and place, which is where your nostalgia is coming from. It's a lot easier to feel more 'empty' with games when you can buy games sometimes as cheap as a pack of gum with no effort at all -- you don't even have to leave your room. Gaming suddenly doesn't feel so special anymore. But that doesn't make the ownership of all these games less valuable, it just means the enjoyment you get out of the hobby is stifled a little bit because the mystique of video games are now gone. Gaming can't feel 'magical' when the games are so easily attainable as they are today.
Anyway, just my two cents. I don't plan on giving up gaming any time soon (nor do my friends), and I'm now reaching the age where people are starting to insinuate that I'm now too 'grown up' to play video games.

    • @GenerationGapGaming

I dont spent much tho, cant afford it, but i do buy some, I thought I was doing it because I don't have kids or wife & hadn't grown up but guess is just nostalgia because thanks to you & all the other cool retro game channels I know im not alone. I feel ya man. I love game hunting, it's a positive thing for me. I collect all of them j can get my hands on. It started for me to be a kindergarten kid and his mother staying up all night on weekends with a rental console. It soon became ownership. Nostalgia is why I do it. To pass those feelings on to my kids that I had. I now have 4 other younger collectors that are always on the hunt also. We dont have retro stores here. Only garage sales and yard sales are the best to get em. Besides facebook marketplace now which is a new adventure. Gamestop sells retro if you ask for it way over priced and not worth the time. So we stick to the basics in montana. I have a collection of 137 new titles and hundreds more of other consoles also. It has taken me almost 15 years to get where I'm at and I'm still going strong with my boys. It wont end anytime soon. Retro gamer for life and after mine also!

My 2 cents to old folks (44) like me. As an adult theres nothing wrong with having old retro games, comics and toys we grew up with but when those things actually have you it becomes a problem. When it's an obsession at the expense of family and life it's time to re-evaluate. That said, go enjoy it. Bring your childhood into your adult life and find the sweetspot.

It's part of who we are, I agree with you 100% the feeling you got when you saw where it all began for you, the TV, the setup, the systems, I bet it looked a lot smaller to you then when you were a kid! These memories identify a time period, a culture, a imagination where we can escape, like reading a good book or watching a movie from that time period. It identifies our childhood our friends and family memories, nothing wrong to recapture those moments🤘

I started out retro gaming with emulation in 2010. Slowly I started getting more stuff; consoles, crts, flashcarts. I didn't want to collect but it kind of turned into that. I got in the mindset where I wanted to buy something with each paycheck. But really, I had enough equipment for a lifetime of gaming and then some. I stopped this cycle about 2 years ago. I was ready to buy an rgb modded neo geo aes and a flashcart. It was going to cost $1,000.00 and I stopped myself. There is only a handful of games I want to play on the neo geo and a thousand bucks is a lot of money in my family. I didn't buy it and I iv'e only bought a couple controllers since then. I still retro-game all the time. If your a collector it's different but if your a gamer It's good to know when to stop and to have self control.
