Eric, I've seen a lot of videos but I don't think I've ever seen one talking about the knees. Now I know why my early hip extension has been giving me erractic golf shots. Thanks for giving us rank amateurs a better perspective on playing golf. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks. I had knee surgery on my trail leg 6 months ago. Been able to play again for 6 weeks but went from a 7 cap to a 19 in addition to losing 50 yards. This is a big help. I’ve been focusing on getting more depth vs twisting the knee. Trying different “cheats” with right foot turned and widths of the feet. It appears that the answer is the opposite of what I’ve been trying. Closer together, quieter legs and more relaxed arms. Oh and new clubs. New clubs are always the answer.
Absolutely a swing killer and a reason many people shank the ball. Starting with the ball addressed at the center of the clubface many people take their arms back and don’t move their trail hip back. What happens inevitably on the way down you do fire your hips which now moves your low point further away from you and you are now delivering the hosel to the ball from that once centered position. Sometimes you can correct at impact by pulling your arms back which then causes the chicken wing, an out to in path among other flaws. Many videos on how to “cure” the shanks never address the role of the hips. Great video.
(Larry San Diego) This drill has vaulted to the top of my ten plus other early extension drills and I used it for the first time today. Cant wait for your Monday question and instruction session next month.
:) Thanks, Larry! Unfortunately we are not planning on doing the Rapid Fire live this year as of now....but glad you enjoy this video and will let you know if anything changes!
Nice drill and definitely helps! I think this is exactly the reason I always hell strike on my driver. I also found that if I shift my hip a little toward target (weight shifting ?), it will help me turn easier without early extend my rear leg...Thanks
@@CogornoGolf One more comment: I incorporated this into my swing and it's made a huge improvement! I played 9 holes yesterday at 3200 yards par 36. Shot a 38. Drives weren't great. Only hit one fairway. But my GIRs were better!
Yes it’s very much like a thing that I do just with a different swing thought. Lead foot oriented single plane (sort of) swing which corrects a lot of things like sway back, early extension or right foot spinning out, not to mention a good shaft lean which is much easier to implement. Your swing here looks very much like it. It’s excellent for left eye dominated closed players like myself. Thanks!
nice video. I enjoy when the instruction is mixed in with sort of funny anecdotes. And the funniest anecdotes are ones with an element of truth. Real #1 swing fault....open club face. :) Then Eric asking Eric why he doesn't just do this drill always? Cause the next video will be the best. Keep up the good work. Some of the most inciteful golf instruction on UA-cam.
Some days I go to the range and everything feels so crisp and pure. I have total control and am hitting my shots about 90% of the time. Other times I go to the range and it's like I've never hit a golf ball before. Nothing is solid, too many swing thoughts, and I just lose all confidence in my swing. Is this just golf? How do I go about combatting these bad swing days?
Confidence and finding a routine helps but I know what you mean ... once you loose what you practise it’s back to square one just keep a record of what feels good and take notes 📝👌
I think thats just life. Some days I wake up ready to conquer the world and everything goes my way. Other days I can't seem to get my underwear on correctly. Enjoy the good. Move on from the bad.
Eric, tour instruction is great. I bought the 15 shots program to eliminate slice in my driver. It took me more than 15 shots anyway but very helpful. This video should be part of the program since I found that I hit in the heel because of early extension. It seems that hitting in the heel also Generate slice?
This video kinda got me sentimental because you took me back to my old swing coach Jerry and he use to talk about this a lot and it’s something I forgot to do it’s been 7 years or so since he passed he was like a father figure to me he never charged me either he just wanted me to do Rodney Dangerfield impersonation caddie shack quotes for him thank you for bringing this video out and thanks for bringing old wonderful memories back to me this one hit home
It's like this video was made because of my swing video in the Facebook group 😂🤣 I have the stick in front of my lead leg to stop slide but I see my trail leg popping out from DTL on video. I'm gonna add another stick like this video and learn how to turn inside both sticks. The only issue I had reducing the slide is I hang back on trail foot. The stick in front of tail knee should help me turn and push of my trail leg instead of it just bending and popping out toward the ball/target line right?
Eric, have you ever encountered a case where someone who hits their irons consistently all of a sudden starts slicing poorly to the right because they claim the feel of the club all of a sudden feels weird? Fast forward the next day, hitting normally again, then swing thought leads to that terrible right slice? This happened to me a month or so back, disappeared and then recently came back again. Have you heard of this and the potential cause?
Hey Allan! Over the past 15 years there is not much I haven't heard....but you never know! Some players are able to have the knee outside toe line and still turn and side bend enough to make it work. They are NOT the norm, rather the anomaly. Check out the top 100 ball strikers. Keep the right heel down, until impact...rolling on the instep. Right hip, thigh, knee, cannot move toward the ball if that right(trail) heel is kept down. It is virtually impossible. Added bonus is you will start using the ground forces better... and you will feel it is easier to get your arms and the club back in front of you, because you have more space, because your hips are kept back (deep). All This from just keeping the right heel down until impact, and then coming up onto your toe into finish, as normal.
Wow... at last got back to the range after lockdown and was struggling with all the info I’d absorbed from Eric’s awesome videos. So I ended up just concentrated on this feel and I was smashing it. Thank you Eric.
Any videos and keeping yours eyes on the ball during the backswing. I’ve all ways had trouble with this and pretty sure it causes me to shank it and hit all over the face.
Hey! I do not believe we have a video specifically on that....maybe in the future. Keep your face pointed toward the ball with left ear slightly lower than right
These drills won't solve the issue because it's not a downswing issue. It's a backswiing issue. The root cause is locking the right hip straight in backswiing. You have to get people to feel the hip slightly flexed and straight but not locked. Once you feel the difference you can't unfeel it but you have to always be aware of it or you'll get back into locking the hip.
@@CogornoGolf locking the hip causes the center of gravity to shift weight to the outside of the right foot and forward to the ball of the foot. This causes early hip extension during downswing. To correct ask golfer if they can raise their right heel at the top of backswiing. If they can their hip is too straight and probably locked with weight on the ball of foot. Have them slightly flex hip but keep it straight unlocking the hip. This moves the weight to the inside and back to the heel. They SHOULD NOT be able to raise the heel at that point in the swing. That comes later after the weight has shifted to the left side and the hips bring the heel up naturally.during rotation.
