    Wow.. S3R..did a great job. That was a massive face plant and shin bar stood in its place. Great video comparison WITH PROOF...LOL.. 🤙

      While it did it's job, the chin bar was broken and the upper lid was pretty well dented. But, that's what it's supposed to do. Thanks Bud!

    I've been riding with the Super DH for about a year now. Absolutely love this helmet. The versatility of traveling with one helmet that is DH (ASMT F1952) certified where I can climb with no chin bar and bomb down in a full face, or spend a whole day at the park with the full face is amazing. I had kept away from the super 3r because of the lack of certification. If I lived in a place where I did regular bike park days, I'd definitely get a second dedicated full face.

      I was just telling someone i think i'll be taking the Super DH to Whistler this year over the POC. Clearly i have ulterior motives, but i will be riding some trail there to and if not filming, the half lid is super comfy and fits really well.

      I know this is a really old comment, but I just want to ask: Is the 477 g without the chin bar noticeable? I have a 250 g helmet, and have been looking at the super dh for the occasional bike park visit with singletrack as the daily use.

      Of course with the other to you can actually remove the whole chin bar. Just like a football helmet that the guard can be removed and helmet left in place for CPR or ventilations.... god forbid.

    Good helmet buying guide.. I use the bell super 2r and the mips was wreaking my head with the squeeky sounds so I rubbed some normal candle wax between the mips and the helmet and no more noise, I only applied it once and that was 3 years ago!

      You should get one before you crash, I also bike in Colorado, at Snowmass, and I crashed and went to the ER and got stitches inside my mouth, if I would’ve had a full face I wouldn’t have gotten hurt, I have the magnetic one, with a detachable chin bar, which makes it better because I just detach it to take it off.

    I love my Sweet Protection Arbitrator. It fits me perfectly and feels comfy in both configurations. It looks very stylish, is amazingly solid and confidence inspiring. I use it for bike parks and other rides where I used to use my old DH helmet and it's worked beautifully. In half lid config it's just a bit top heavy but not so much that I would notice it in any way when riding. It takes a bit longer to convert from half lid to full face but don't give a toss about that as I usually do it once a ride. I use half lid when I cycle to a place where i need full face, convert it and when I'm done I convert it back to a half lid (that's as quick as in any other convertible helmet). Highly recommended!

  • @MissingLinkMTB
    @MissingLinkMTB 5 років тому +2

    Very good point in your summary. It's better to have "a" helmet than no helmet at all (or even one you've crashed in before). Walmart has CPSC helmets for $25 and companies like SixSixOne and Demon have MIPS full face lids available for $150 even. Head injuries are no joke.

    Fit is important for sure, but being a little uncomfortable is worth it for the most protection. So I don’t agree with you but always love your videos. Keep em coming Tonka.

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  5 років тому

      Jack Adler I think we’re on the same page Jack. When I say fit is most important I mean that proper figment provides the best protection because the helmet stays put in a crash. While a full face is more uncomfortable it does offer superior protection. But proper fitment of a full face offers the highest level of protection. 👍

      I am skeptical about going convertible. I had a fixed full face helmet and just recently had an otb crash landed on my face with nothing broken, thanksfully. My Podium Demon saved me. So from your experience, it sounds like convertibles are as safe as fixed full face helmets??

    I have the Giro with the removable chin bar, I only use it when I am in a bike park, it is too hot otherwise. The chin feature is nice but if I had to do it all over again, i would have just bought a normal downhill helmet with the best fit and ventilation. for every day riding, I have a Scott helmet, it is the one that fit best. I tried POC but they did not fit me correctly. Most of my riding I never leave the ground. I dont know how that kid survived that crash, his neck must be made of neoprene.

    I am not so sure about those magnetic buckles.
    especially after seeing a pic of a dh racer crashing and helmet coming off, but it was a Leatt helmet. I saw it on instagram, but can't find that pic.
    also I ma concerned about how secure the straps would be, if they go out of adjustment often or stay secure, this is why I love double D ring buckle, it's the strap adjustment, locking mechanism and a buckle, making it easy to open and close and secure, as long as the wet straps don't freeze, yes I ride in subzero temps, I have experienced very stiff straps cus they got wet and then froze, but I managed to open it anyway, but a min with my warm fingers would warm it up anyway.

    Funny, I literally just purchased a Fox Proframe last night. I have been using the Giro Switchblade, but just feel that in a serious wreck that face guard may fail. Better to be safe than sorry especially at this stage of the game for me!

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  5 років тому +1

      As far as i can tell, the removable chin bars do their jobs, once. But in reality, any helmet is a one time crash helmet. So if the chin bar breaks, but protects your face in the process, it's all the same as crashing in a dedicated full face, even if the chin bar of the dedicated full face doesn't break. But it's hard to beat the Proframe for ventilation. Good choice!

    • @FlowFinderUSA
      @FlowFinderUSA 5 років тому

      @@MrTonka Yeah I agree. I happened to watch a video of a guy who had the Switchblade and the chin bar did in fact protect his face, but actually snapped off and hit him in the neck afterwards. To me there seems like a bit to much "play" in the bar itself. The more you remove the chin bar the more it loosens up. No bueno. That Bell helmet you have really locks in which IMO is a better/more reliable removable option. Thanks! Seems to get some great reviews all around.

    QUESTION FOR MR. TONKA: Great video! Thanks so much for the review. Thanks to your other review, I purchased my POC Tectal Race in size M/L and its a perfect fit on my 58cm melon. Now I'm interested in the POC Coron Air, but in several reviews by fellow UA-camrs with 57-58cm head circumference they had to pick the Coron Air in XL/XXL (59-62) size, even when they ride the Tectal Race in M/L (55-58). I understand you picked both the POC Tectal Race AND the Coron Air in M/L. My questions are:
    1) What is your head circumference in cm?
    2) Is the Coron Air in M/L the right fit or if you could do it again would you go to the larger size?
    I would appreciate your reply, as where I live my only option is to order online and I can't try the helmet. Many thanks!

    When your parents put a price on your head.
    expect them to be gifts, $350can FOX PROFRAME, its so light and so much air passes through, I only take it off if im walking. its expensive, but I can learn more, knowing i am safe and comfortable. the more you can concentrate on the bike, and not your gear holding you back is way better. aswell if you dont crash for a year it was a dollar a day to not pick up your teeth. the only thing you should be scared of is your metal pedals flying around, they can do some damage.

      @@MrTonka my point is, you may buy it as it is marketed towards the gravity side of things. You may receive it, try it on and be perfectly happy with it. It may only be when the moment you suffer a big one that you comentomrealise nothing about it is rated for gravity usage finding that the front of your face becomes mangled as the chin guard caves in.
      Not everyone will take the time to understand the safety ratings. They'll see a semi respected manufacturers product, see that it's full face, see the lower price, and assume they'll be all good to head out for a round of enduro riding.
