  • What is best: fixed solar panel on 4x4 or carrying a solar blanket ? Solar panel vs solar blanket for overlanding and going offgrid with a 4x4 camper. Power efficency isn't the question here. What is the more pratical solar setup for a 4wd camper ?

I have a foldable 100w panel for my leisure battery in Defender 90 mainly running compressor fridge when not driving as I don’t have space on top of the roof tent. It works perfectly well
    Thanks for another great video

My aux battery is charged by a Victron DC2DC charger mounted in my Defender. In Southern Africa a lot of remote places have no campsite grid power and we rely on solar panels to keep batteries charged. For me the only benefit of portable panels is space. I use a rigid glass 200W panel that’s a beast to store securely and awkward to move around.

I'm going to do both. A fixed system for the secondary batteries and a portable battery generator that can be charged in the car, at home or via solar. This way I should have enough power but also a flexible system that is a bit more portable around a campsite. I'm going to fit a Lensun bonnet (hood) solar panel on my new Defender with solar on the top of the roof tent.

I went for the Allpowers SP012 which folds down to about 30x20x8cms so it’s really compact. It keeps my 100ah leisure battery topped up even when it’s a bit cloudy.

I prefer to use both. The fixed panels are of a wattage that will keep the on-board batteries charged up (under normal sun conditions) with typical use/demands of my equipment. i use suitcase and very efficient portable solar panels for additional power/charging supply if needed. I also use the portable panels to charge up my Bluetti 200 Max and home built 100 Ah power box (with various 12 volt/USB and 120 volt inverter). I like the flexibility of portable suitcase panels and lithium battery power units. i do not worry about the engine battery and do not draw power from it other than to start them motor. If that battery fails I have a compact booster to start the Jeep.

Thanks for sharing. Like you, we don’t draw any power from starter battery except for engine start and have a compact booster in case.

I have never used any solar any thing that stuff is all new to me but I’m thinking your going to have a lot of fun traveling in warmer climates. Those insects are pretty big.

You don't need either one. I have a solar blanket and I've never used it, except once to demonstrate it. Now if you have permanent solar hooked directly to your engine battery it can reduce the cycling of the alternator and save you a bit of fuel. My battery will fully charge in 15 minutes of idling.

In this case we wouldn’t be able to use our induction hob neither use my computer while stopped so not a solution for our setup and use

    Thankyou Emeline ,
I have both . The fixed panel acts as a 2nd roof over the cab and also charges thru the dc/dc charger when parked in the sun ( which is certainly not all the time when camping ) if I am in one place for more than a day , then I must use the 180w folding panels to keep the Lithium Aux battery charged . I have used this setup for many years of overland travel and find that it works very efficiently for my situation .

Great to know your setup works well for you and that you found the right way to keep it all charged when you stop for more than 1 day 👍🏼
