    My daughter has been waiting all year for the leaves to fall and to be able to play in them, since it is the first year she is old enough to fully understand that it is fun, not just work, lol. She loved watching your littles play. She still has to wait for her leaf pile because we got SNOW! What's with that weird weather! And with the leaves still on the trees.

    I had a young cow but that time I did not have much experience, she was so thin, nearly lost one of its dimensions and was about to turn into a picture, she was not weak, on the contrary, she was so vital. when she came into heat, I took her to the bull, when he was mounting her, she was folding like if you are folding a towel, I had to sell it because some animals are not meant to breed. What I think about Dolly The Great, it is not the same case. I would keep her even if she will not breed, and I will not stop trying. All the best for u guys.

    Usually if a cow is pregnant they sometimes fill up between the hip and rib but older cows and goats don't always show there. I have an older goat who can have two or three and won't show. Its a great guessing game sometimes.

    This (the is she/isn't she with Dolly) is interesting for me. I don't know much about cows, but we want a mini zebu or maybe a zebu/Jersey cross when we finally get going. I don't wish the struggle on you, but it's good for me to see that having a cow isn't all cream and butter and happy calves! I wish we had that many leaves. I have make do with my pear tree and little mulberry bushes for our sandpit of a yard. By the time we move maybe it'll turn into something that could support life...

    • @Brifromscratch
      @Brifromscratch 7 років тому

      Clever Kim's Curios We could've easily solved all this guessing by just doing a blood test. But we really thought having her palpated was enough to tell if she was bred or not. In the future, we will avoid all this guessing by just giving our animals pregnancy test. For us, it has been kind of funny to be on a bit of a bumpy ride with her. The frustrating at times, we have learned a lot.

    Dolly has been with you how long? 6 months? Cow gestation is roughly 283 days -- so i guess it is possible if she was in a field with a bull prior to coming to you. Have you asked the previous owners?

    • @cbwmama8461
      @cbwmama8461 7 років тому +1

      OK, I am confused. Who said she was open? Where I come from -- we had Galloways -- open means NOT pregnant. You were given this cow believing she was pregnant but either she aborted early and the fetus was absorbed -- or she was never pregnant that time. Now 5 months later, you send her out to be covered by a bull -- she returns to you and those people say they believe she is pregnant and due at any time because she never came into heat, they did not see the bull mount her, and she has a big belly. Yet someone preg checked her via rectal palpation -- and said she was open. When??? It is very possible people are using terms they do not actually understand!
      Urine pregnancy tests on cows can give false negatives. Also remember Petara's cow did not deliver when expected and they called the Vet who found the cow was very ill. I recommend you contact Patara and then the Vet -- bite the bullet and pay for the cost of an ultra sound. Your husband is an RN -- RN's make good money (I should know -- I am a retired Director of Nurses). If you cull this animal and then find out during the butchering that she is pregnant -- you will be kicking yourselves for years! If she is not pregnant -- the Vet might determine that she is ill with something that is fixable. When one of our cows aborted -- we gave them 2 yrs to get back on their feet before we set them in the pasture with the bull. We also had them checked out by the Vet to insure there were no complications -- infections -- from the abortion. Now -- we had no problems maintaining a cow for 2 yrs because we raised our own hay and in close to 20 yrs never had to supplement from expensive outside sources.
      You are learning -- as we did. You cannot become an expert in the blink of an eye. Also realize -- in this day and age -- being a farmer on a small plot of land -- under 50 acres -- is difficult and expensive. My Dad always worked a well paying outside job -- as did my Mom (RN Nurse Midwife) due to the mortgage on our farm. Heck -- my Uncle was gifted his ranch in Wyoming by his father-in-law and still had to work part time to make ends meet! You are luckier than most of these young farmers on You Tube because you have an infrastructure already in place (your barns). I get very frustrated when these young farmers buy animals without proper shelter for them and think pallet and straw and tarps will do the trick. And then complain about the cost of a Vet -- yet buy this and that expensive camera to make a killing on You Tube grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Be smart -- spend money where it needs to be spent -- and learn.

    • @GetToTheFarm
      @GetToTheFarm 7 років тому

      sellers said she was AI'd then with bull four months- im sure the expected due date in AUG was from the AI. She was preg checked in Aug. I was saying if she still had 4-5 months left - preg check may have missed tiny baby and she could still be due in DEC -

    • @Brifromscratch
      @Brifromscratch 7 років тому +4

      It's a confusing story. When they say open they definitely mean not pregnant. The long and short of it is this. She came to us supposed to of been pregnant through artificial insemination. She never calved. Before she came to us but after she had AI. She was in a pasture with a bull for four months. After she never calved we had her palpated. We were told she was open. We sent her off to be bred. She never came into heat. The people whose farm she was at really believe she is pregnant and due to calf in about about A month. Seeing as that Dolly is acting perfectly healthy we will not be calling a vet. If she doesn't calf by February, then we will call the vet to find out what is going on with her.

  • @OldesouthFarm
    @OldesouthFarm 7 років тому

    That big egg maybe a double yolk egg. Usually one gets them from the new baby hens. I love double yolked eggs and consider them special. Once the hens get laying they go away. Enjoy the abundance of the young hens. Piles of leaves are so much fun to play in and so enrich your garden! Just draw blood and get poor Dolly pregnancy tested. Then all the drama will be over. I blood pregnancy my goats through Biopyrn out of Florida. BioBYRN is the pregnancy testing and cheap. For cattle $2.50! For goats, more expensive and have a $10 set up fee if under 4 goats and $6.50/test! When I get my CAE and Johnes blood draws I put in for pregnancy testing on certain does. Not all, just the ones I have reservations on and want to make sure they are pregnant. The young does get pregnant easy. The old Champions, sometimes not so.www.centralfloridalargeanimal.com/ This is the lab I use for my goat pregnancy testing. They are quick and email results. They do cattle more then goats. A resource to keep in mind. There is a mobil Vet in your area of NC, but no web site but can check out locations by going to Biopryn and looking up your area.

    Uncertainties like this is why vets always ask very carefully if you want to use a hormone shot to bring your girls into heat for breeding out of cycle. Many a owner found out the open girl they thought to bring into heat for rebreeding slips a dead baby from the hormones. There by losing the breeding they thought they had not secured in the first place.

    • @bearvalleyfibres
      @bearvalleyfibres 7 років тому

      CZhorses most vets will do a pregnancy check before giving them a hormone shot through.

      Had a mare at the studs to be brought into heat for breeding.... the vet said you SURE shes not pregnant.. ( i have no stallions anywhere around) then said you would not believe the number of people that happens to. give shot and then theres a dead baby in the stall....

      CZhorses that is crazy. I've been working with vets all my life and never met one that would not check before giving a hormone shot.
