Honestly, I don’t blame Julia Michaels for the failure of “This Wish”. I mostly blame the executives who gave her nothing but 3 weeks and a barebones summary without letting her rework the song overtime
I agree with this. The executives did not give artists and the writers the time to breathe, them along with Bob Iger really need to resign as they are killing the reputation of the company.
It's no exaggeration to say, that this song pretty mutch saved disney's ass for years to come. I never really bought into the Disney renaissance mockery! Until Wish came Out!
Jodi Benson has an amazing voice, and she's an underrated voice actress. I'd be interested in a ranking of Disney princess' voice actors' performances (original movies only; sequels not included).
“Out There” is a beautiful ballad about how selfless Quasimodo is. He just wants one day to live among the people, and he got it. The animation is stellar, Tom Hulce kills the tone of the song perfectly, and it’s just so well contrasted with Frollo’s part at the beginning. Absolutely incredible.
I was honored to be asked to sing the part of Frollo for "Out There" for my dear friend's junior recital, and the performance went super well--he killed the super high tenor notes!!
My fav is probably “Waiting on a Miracle” because it just feels so genuine. Mirabel just spits out all her emotions. Not to mention how smoothly it transitions into her song. It comes at a moment when she is emotionally isolated
I also feel it very genuinely, because it's been a long time since I heard a Disney song this penetrating that makes me feel many emotions exploring within Mirabel.
I heard Mirabel's VA recorded that song while in labor, and if that's true, mad props to her. You could really feel Mirabel's repressed pain and desperation just exploding out in that song, and the visuals are beautiful!
it feels like a diary entry. Like this character is just admitting all her bottled up feelings for the first time and is completely unapologetic about it. The 3/4 waltz time, the beginning acting as a reprise of the opening song, the foreshadowing it’s so underrated!
Although not technically a “true” I want song, I think Esmeralda’s song: God Help the Outcasts should’ve been ranked. It’s a good example of what Disney tried (and failed) to do with the song “This Wish”. Unlike Asha’s song, Esmeralda’s song is a true example of a selfless protagonist. The lyrics are poignant and reflect the very purity of Esmeralda’s soul: “I ask for nothing, I can get by. But I know so many less lucky than I. Please help my people” She’s calling out for divine help but not even for herself (keep in mind at this point in the film Esmeralda is being persecuted by Frollo and prohibited form leaving the church) Yet despite this, she still sings for the outcasts of the society. Strength and selflessness at its finest 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
FUN FACT: Jeffrey Katzenberg almost cut the Part of Your World song from the final cut because he believed children would get bored of it after a kid dropped his box of popcorn during a test screening. Thankfully, Ariel's lead animator: Glen Keane convinced him not to remove it by giving it another chance, but in color. And the rest is history.
Even Howard Ashman convinced Jeffrey to keep the song in the movie because it can make us feel sympathy for Ariel. Disney will never be the same without him.
My favorite "I want" song is definitely reflection. It's the first time as I child that I felt such an emotional connection to a song and it really stuck with me

My fav songs "I want" are: I'm almost there (I like to remember it to like Tiana, encourage me for my goals), Waiting on a miracle (It's so genuinely and penetrating that makes me feel many emotions exploring within Mirabel and her wish of belong), Reflection (Mulan's wish was bring honor to her family, not specific how: since Mulan does not know what awaits her or what she is looking for, at no time did she want to go to war) and Into the Unknow (I love it because of the tone of mystery that surrounds it about who is calling to Elsa, she doesn't know, nor if she wants to follow that calling or where it will lead her)
Even though it’s so short, I’ve always loved One Jump Ahead (Reprise). Aladdin’s voice is what sold it for me. The facetious kid we just watched outrun the authorities sort of breaking down at the end of the day, wishing to just be seen as somebody worth giving a damn about enough to get the chance to be seen for more than a destitute “street rat” just melted my heart. And I come from a family that isn’t very well off, so it deeply resonates with me. I’ve always wished it was longer, even if only to get more vocals of longing because the voice and sentiment are just beautiful to me.

My favorite I want song is actually Anastasia’s “Once Upon a December”. I know, not Disney (or is it? Disney technically owns it now). For Disney it’s The Little Mermaid’s “Part of your World” both because it’s a beautiful song and because I’ve always been a reverse Mermaid who is a human who wishes she could become a mermaid and swim under the sea without unfortunate consequences such as drowning. I think Aladdin’s “One Step Ahead” song suits him well because it expresses that he’s so downtrodden his “want” is simply making sure he has his next meal and not getting caught by the guards. He has so little prospects in life until he finds the Genie that he can’t even dream of a better life the way most Disney protagonists can. Honestly though Genie’s “Friend Like Me” is the standout “I want” song in that movie, even though it’s more about Genie’s desire to grant Aladdin’s wishes out of gratitude for finally being let out of the lamp than Genie’s own wish to be free. Anyway “Friend Like Me” is probably my favorite song in the movie just because of the chaotic randomness Genie brings to everything he does.

I absolutely adore "How far I'll go", the "What is wrong with me?" hit so hard. I love, that Moana is a protagonist, who doesn't really WANT to rebel against what she has, but still feels like she have to, because it is in her heart. She wants to be satisfied with the island life, but just can't. And that feels personal to me.
Is A Whole New World or See the Light an I want song? Aladdin wants to show Jasmine the world which she also wants. While Rapunzel always wanted to see the lights and Flynn gives her what she wants.
@@reannagordon One Jump Def considered one! Makes sense! I See the Lights & Whole New World aren't I want songs though in answer but are good songs! Most known one in soundtrack!

Not to self promote, but if you love the songs in this video and wish you could analyze them forever, the multilanguage Disney community is absolutely the place for you. With every film, about 40 different countries pick the perfect actors and singers to redub the whole film and it's fascinating to see which vocalists manage to create the same - or different, or BETTER - sense of nuance and longing. When Will My Life Begin: Rapunzel wants to go out into the world & discover her purpose which ultimately was her being the princess of Corona.
Reflection Go the distance I just can't wait to be king and part of youre world easily one of the best I want songs.
Rapunzel and tangled are goated
Part of Your World, A Whole New World, I Just Can't Wait To Be King, Out There & If I Can Go The Distance are the best "I Want" songs
A Whole New World isn't a I Want song though. It's a love song. It's Aladdin giving want Jasmine wants (and he wants), freedom.
Solid list and fun to hear you draw from your personal experiences.
Is A Whole New World or See the Light an I want song? Aladdin wants to show Jasmine the world which she also wants. While Rapunzel always wanted to see the lights and Flynn gives her what she wants.
When Will My Life Begin is Rapunzel I Want Song! I'm not sure if Aladdin has one!
@@Joell351 I was thinking maybe One Jump Ahead, based on the lyrics and the scenes in the movie? Maybe not?
@@reannagordon One Jump Def considered one! Makes sense!
I See the Lights & Whole New World aren't I want songs though in answer but are good songs! Most known one in soundtrack!
@@Joell351 yep those are the only ones I listen too on repeat from their soundtracks on Spotify. And yes I love the live action version of A Whole New World. Just as good as the original one, mainly cause Naomi Scott is an actual singer and carried the song.
I think that the villains' songs are more like "I'm gonna do" songs rather than "I want" songs.
(If you're curious about some of my takes - POTW is best in Hebrew and Japanese, Waiting on a Miracle in Lithuanian and Georgian, How Far I'll Go is best in Maori, and Someday My Prince Will Come touches my heart in Swedish 1938)
Anyone else mad that Jasmine doesn’t have an “I Want” song
Me!!
No.
We all know the best best "I want Song" is Bufford's from Phineas and Ferb.
Awww Alice’s song didn’t make the cut :( world of my own is akin to just can’t wait to be king
I think Almost There is the best one. Since it's not about what they want or what they fell they are owed, but how they are almost there towards achieving their goals.
This is less ranking the songs, and more ranking how well they fit the definition of an “I want” song
actually, i feel that anna is the main character in frozen 2, and elsa is the main one of frozen 1. 2 is more about anna’s psychological fear of abandonment, while 1 is more about elsa learning how to deal with the situation at hand (i.e. love thaws the frozen)
how about ranking disney's love songs?
songs like: I See the Light, I Won't Say (I'm In Love), A Whole New World, Beauty and the Beast, Ma Belle Evangeline, etc.
I see the light is so good!
"True Love Kiss" from Enchanted
Watching this is now getting me in the mood to listen to all of these “I Want” songs
(except for This Wish of course)
Lol
The video was a bit hard to follow since I don’t have all these songs memorised. I enjoyed listening to your opinions on the ones I do know though.
This Wish is so relatable to my life. No one is believing you, you just want something for everyone. I mean the line "So I make this wish, to have something more for us than this" is kinda sad.
Good for you tbh some of his Wish rant points are pretty dumb lol
Will you cover Disney movie dubs someday? Because the fact that our own country(🇭🇺, infamous for terrible dubbing, insert mlp joke here) done mutch better job!
Same does mine. Greek has most of the time the worst dubs but Wish? WISH?! It nailed it!!
@@Simbala-bq5vy. Can't get worse than hungary. Most female ponies got male voices(babs)!
I wonder how much more you can talk about Disney sidekicks.
Personal #1 is Almost there, Tiana has the most beautiful voice of all the princesses to me
Part of your World being the top is CORRECT! 😍
I’m counting Hellfire as an I Want song and I’m putting it at number 1
Ranking “Out There” at 11 is criminal.
Oh my god NOoo the snippet of the reprise of One Jump Ahead is more memorable to me than many of the songs on this list
Edit: okay actually I’m more mad that Out There is so low it’s one of the only I Want songs that actually make me feel the emotion in his longing
"Just around the Riverbend" and "Part of Your World" are my top. I'm biased though, they are my favorite princesses. 😁
Can you do a video on Yen Sid???
In the words of Martin Luther King Jr " I have a dream " and his day is today. Is it for that specific reason or just a coincidence
Today is Martin Luther King Day
Could you do a ranking of sidekick songs?
i love waiting on a miracle or rapunzel's song in tangled.
but i like into the unknown as well.
Can Waiting in the Wings get an honorable mention 😂
I LOVE almost there
So I make this wish.
That the last song is this wish.
And my wish came true :D
Out There being so low on the list is a crime.
go the ditance is still my 1
"Go to the Distance" was my childhood..... 🥲🎼🎵
Does “Jack’s Lament” from Nightmare Before Christmas count?
Do love songs next
It’s disappointing you didn’t count Strangers like me from Tarzan
What do you think of Colinlookback Villain retrospective?
I wanna know
Can you show me
I wanna know about these strangers Iike me
Do the wise advisor songs then the romantic songs after this.
There is also the song that Alice sings at the beginning of Alice In Wonderland
