In this video I demonstrate how to service the singer 301 sewing machine and the motor in order to keep it in the best possible condition
I go over the hook, bobbin and bobbin case as they are very unique. I also cover threading, tension and general use of the singer 301
The singer 301 is the original slant needle machine, first built in the 1950's with an enclosed motor that goes from bottom to top.
After World War II, 1939-1945, most sewing machine manufacturers were marketing the same machines they sold prior to the war. Singer with the Models 99-13, 128, 66-18, 15-88, 15-91, 201 and 221. There was a very desperate need for change with not only the family sewing machine but also for educators and high school home economic classes.
Fortunately, Singer was already engineering a new machine to introduce for its 100th Anniversary that would revolutionize the sewing-machine-of-tomorrow with a dramatic departure in design to make home sewing easier and more convenient. A machine unlike any other in the past 100 years of sewing machine production.
On 17 November 1944 Singer Manufacturing Company applied for a patent for the 30. Its primary objective to provide an improved sewing machine which will afford better visibility at the stitching point. The needle-bar and the presser-bar are inclined rearward between eight and sixteen degrees to a vertical plane.
The inclined needle bar would become known as the "Slant-needle" and engineering of this new machine would continue over the next several years. During that time Singer started construction on the new Anderson, South Carolina factory that was being built to specifically manufacture the new slant-needle sewing machines.

FANTASTIC video! Thank you so much!!
Thanks for your instructions on the motor. I found it easier to reassemble once the wires were through to the brush holders to actually take the winding casing loose and reassemble upside down
Excellent video, very well explained that even I could do it. Thank you!!!
Just watched your awesome video ! Trying to figure out how to get to the manuals. I will be rewatching this video again. Thank you again.
If you still have not gotten the manuals here is the link.

Thank you for the video. I have a 301 given me by my older neighbors before they moved 42 years ago. I had it serviced and the guy rebuilt it and it runs great. Problem. He told me all the wrong things to do. So I am going to give it the once over: grease and oil and clean it , using your wonderful instructions. Thank you. You give me confidence.
Very informative video! Thank you!
Hello. I have a Singer series 301A. My serial # is NA384684. I love your hands-on maintenance training. I am new to this singer series 301A.
Ran great and suddenly started running very very slowly. Bought a new foot pedal and ran great for a minute then very very slowly. Following this video, this ‘ol gal runs like a screaming meemie. What ever that is. I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to educate folks on the particulars of this machine.
Following along with my 301, and my tensioner works
Thank you for this video. It's very helpful. Would you consider doing a video or series on how to disassemble the machine, paint it and reassemble it?
Enjoyed video , learned alot
Дуже дякую вам , гарне відео для тих хто має машини такого класу. Я купив для доньок singer 411g і з ремонтом було складно тому що в Україні мало запчастин , деякі виготовляв самостійно.🩵💛🔥
Very Excellent Video, you are VERY clear and thank you for your expertise that you are sharing with all of us. I have just bought my first 301a and will share my serial number tomorrow (in bed watching this now!)
You are very welcome!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Gracias, aprendí más de mi maquina 301A
OMG I WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO 2:53 MINUTES WAITING TO SEE MY TENSION PROBLEM RESULT, PROBLEM WITH THE BOBIN AND YOU NEVER DID THAT PART 😭😭😭😭, almost 3 hours, THANK YOU ANYWAY THE VIDEO IS PRETTY NICE AND EXPLAINED 🙏
This is one of, if not THE, best instructional howto videos I have seen, and I've been involved in making a few during my time in corporate IT. So great to have someone who knows what he is talking about show how it's done, including emphasis on common points of failure. Thank you!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Here's the serial number on this example: NA483379. This machine originally belonged to my wife's grandmother. My wife will not use any other sewing machine.
Hello Richard, that creaking door scared me and made me flinch. lol great video. well explained. E6000 will work great for gluing that spool pin in, no need for hot a glue gun.
Sorry about that I didn't intend to scare you.
Thank you, I appreciate that.
I have never tried E6000, I'll have to check it out.
I have a few 301 and some parts machines but my goto machine is a black 301 longbed, sn NA109959. Works wonderfully though is making a noise like something is rubbing behind the bobbin when used, so trying correct that and get it back to whisper quiet again
Thanks again so very much! Can you go over the foot peddle adjustment? I find that I don't have much control...seems to be just off or on...no slow control. Thanks again!!
Thank you so much for your thorough video. I bought a 301A yesterday at a yard sale for 10$. it didn't work but after watching your video it runs like a charm. SO EXCITED! However, it doesn't stop right away when I release the foot pedal. Could it be because I oiled too much? Any ideas? Thank you again.
Thank you for a great video. My 301A’s serial number is NA 402972
You are very welcome.
Your machine was manufactured in Anderson SC in 1954.
Here is the info on it.

I would like the manuals, I went through all the steps but haven't seen them yet.
Enjoyed your video!
Thank you just bid on one. I hope I get it.
I hope you get it also, they are pretty awesome machines!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thanks for such a great video I have serial number in a NA158420. Wondering if you can tell me anything more about it. Thanks again so much it was my mother's sewing machine and I am really excited to get it back up and running!
i have one 70,s machine with the the spring loose, think it is because the spring was not properly set. very valuable video , thankyou sir
Your very welcome
I sent a request for the booklets, but it said it was for the 301a. Mine is a 301. My biggest problem is the foot pedal, which you didn't address in this vid. Very helpful video!
The 301 and 301a are the same machines.
The A denotes it was built in the Anderson South Carolina plant.
At 42:30 you said that if you can't screw that nut on it's cuz the two parts of the spindle may be stripped & need to be spread apart. That's the exact problem I'm having right now. Could you go into more detail with that, please. I love my 301a.
0:21 I have a Kenmore 148 1560 that the reverser keeps getting stuck. I tried several suggestions to get it to sew forward. Any suggestions? I have oiled it.
Richard, I enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting. What kind / size of rawhide mallet do you use in the video 00:49:00? Good suggestion on using a rawhide mallet. Thanks!
I n.eed to know how to replace the lever you pull down to engage the automatic needle threader just the lever for a singer tradition 2277 . Any help is appreciated
Thread keeps breaking. Sometimes I can only stitch one stitch and other times it will be a few inches. Stitches are great when it does work. Can I handle this or should I take it in to a shop. I don't have the serial number at this time.
One more question. What kind of oil are you using? Thanks.
Thank you for this video, I am having problems with the bobin winder on my 301 A NB005036 if you could/would have a small video on fixing this problem. (The thread is winding all over and makes a knot in the bobbin.)
It sounds like your thread is not going through the tensioner before going to the bobbin. It is the small silver piece just to the left of the spool pin on the bed below the bobbin winder.
First, this lecture/video is AMAZING for us new 301 owners. ❤❤❤. Secondly, I joined and confirmed the mailing list, but haven’t received the 3 support manuals please. 👋🏻

Hey Bill,
Thank you for your kind words.
I have replied to your email and sent you the link with manuals.
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079. Perfect. Received. You are a wealth of insight, experience, and inspiration. Thank you! 👏👏👏
The video is very informative but there are several parts of it that could have been much easier to see with an overhead camera and if you would wear a headlamp to light up smaller dark areas it would be much easier to see. I just purchased a 301 so am very concerned about servicing it correctly myself.
Great video thank you. I just found a 301A serial # NB141993, it is not a black one and doesn’t have the gold decals but has the gold badge. It is currently being serviced. Iam hoping I can service it myself with your help.
First off, I greatly appreciate the information you provide in this video. Secondly, I just, by happy accident, acquired a 301a nested in a desk I purchased. The motor will turn the bobin drive but not the needle drive. The tension foot is also stuck in an up position. I'll be studying this video to find a way to make this machine work again. Thirdly, any advise would also be greatly appreciated!
Hello Frog,
Sound like the machine needs a though cleaning and needs old dried varnish removed then lubricated well.
Also sounds like it may need some work in the needle bar area.
If you need help let me know.
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 Thank you!

Great tutorial. Question for you, the big red gear has a tiny bit of play in it. Is this normal or an indicator that it needs replaced. The teeth look good but it has a slight wiggle. Please advise.
I presume you are talking about the main drive gear that the motor runs.
Yes it should have some movement, it has a somewhat heavy spring that attaches it to the main shaft.
The spring takes up some of the starting torque to help prevent the gear from breaking from stress.
what cases fit the 301
Would like the Manuel’s
I wish you were my neighbor! I'd be finally using my sewing machine that I can't get to work!
My sister has a Singer with Serial Number G3306647. It even has the Cabinets with some sort of pedal
Any info would be appreciated
just got my black 301, it is NA208417. my needle is hitting something when it tries to go down. what should I do
You first need to look and see what the needle is hitting.
Make sure the needle is properly installed and all the way up in the needle bar.
my 301 is NA200827. I bought it as "for part of repair" and am working my way to repairing it. The tension disc are shot and I need to know how to repair or replace them.
I talked about repairing the tension assembly and the discs in the video at 25:53
Here is the link to that section of the video.

If you need to get a new tension assembly or discs I created a video for finding parts here

I have an opportunity to purchase a 301 that is one of the first 10,000 not 1,000 though. You mentioned that it has more value depending on the condition. Do you have an estimate on what it might be? Thanks
No I do not, it depends on many things, you would also need to find a collector who collects rare machines.
Hi, I have a singer 4411 and it is vibrating so much. I'm getting headaches
Did you watch the video I sent you earlier to day?
The Singer HD series vibrates pretty bad when they are new. Not sure if yours is vibrating more than it should .
What sized metal punch should we use?
A wooden dowel would be better.
Hi Richard, I accidentally removed the felt in the oiling holes as shown at 13:05 thinking it was lint. Is there anything I can replace it with? Would Zippo lighter wick work? Thank you!
I did the exact same thing! I hope you get an answer. Or have you figured out what to use?
@@daffneyc4c I haven't got an answer yet, guess I'll try with felt cord.
@@nguyenng7518 I wiggled and jiggled and poked until I got it back in! I’m glad I only removed one and didn’t throw it away. The task of getting it back in was not an easy one. It was actually a big pain for such a small item. I hope you find an easier way or at least maybe it won’t be as big of pain as mine was. Good luck!
@@daffneyc4c unfortunately, i broke 2 of them when I tried to get them back in
@@nguyenng7518 OH NO! Sorry that happened! Are you on Facebook? There is a private group on Facebook specifically for 301 owners. Look it up and join. Lots of knowledgeable and helpful people there. I bet someone there could help! I belong to the group. You’re more than welcome to come join us!
2:06:54 that looks like the piece of fiberglass gear that is missing. I am a born and raised grease monkey. Grew up in my dad's auto repair shop. I love to tinker. Just broke down 3 Featherweights and got them back to purring like kittens and also just got my Singer 15 clone running. My 301A arrives tomorrow and I can't thank you enough for this video. Does it take a bit of time to get the manuals? I signed up but haven't gotten them yet. God bless.
You are very welcome, no they should have shown up right away let me see what is going on.
I just checked and it shows the email sent, in gmail it may be in your spam or promotion folder.
If you don't find it let me know and I will make sure you get the manuals
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 Thank you! I found it in my spam folder. Your instructions on the motor breakdown were FANTASTIC! I've torn down my 301, cleaned, greased & oiled it and the Adjuster's Manual will really come in handy as I'm having problems with the Feed Regulator. I'm going to take it out and see if cleaning it will help.
my issue is with the bobbin mechanism. The thread on the needle keeps getting jammed into the bobbin. I try to start the machine manually every time like u did... but every time I stop and start again it jams. I dunno why....
So if I understand you correctly the thread is knotting up under the needle plate.
If that is correct, it is the upper thread not the bobbin thread.
Did you raise your presser foot before threading your machine?
is the thread in the tension discs and in the take up lever?
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 yes Im pretty sure Im doing this every time... It happens so often.
I am noticing: once I finish threading the needle, I manually turn the wheel to pull the bobbin thread up out of the needle plate. In videos online this seems like such a simple process... but for me I pull on the thread and it's all jammed in the bobbin. I need to turn the wheel back and forth and pull hard.
Then, when Im done with sewing, I need to pull so hard to remove my fabric. There is always a jam underneath... Im getting better at playing with the wheel... I also often have to manually turn the wheel. the needle often stops or slows down. I dont think it's the fabric, its only 2 layers thick... Maybe my motor is weak? I thought this machine could do light leather (I saw in some videos)...
when I first got it, I could hear a funny squeaking sound. I took the needle plate off like in your video and checked the bobbin. The tab that the needle plate sits on turns fine, but the squeaking comes from behind it as I turned it manually. I oiled behind it and re-assembled the needle plate. it helps a bit....
the thread often breaks, I find the machine a bit weak and the bobbin jams (less now as Im careful). Perhaps my machine is just not a very good one. I think it was restored and perhaps they did not do a very good job...
I try to keep my bobbin and upper thread long as possible when starting a new sew and this helps too. Im not very experienced with sewing and I bought this sewing machine used kuz I didnt want to buy a new plastic one and figured this old machine would be metal and more powerful, but im a bit underwhelmed....
@@sandermez3856
So I assume the thread is knotting up on the bottom of your fabric then.
Assuming that is what is happening, is your needle plate damaged?
Is your Hook Damaged?
It is probably slowing down due to a lot of old drying oil in the bushings that needs to be cleaned out.
If the flat part of the top of the needle is the face then the scarf is on the other side on the bottom end I get it if not I can change it
The flat part of the needle and the scarf are both on the back side. The scarf (backside of the needle) faces the hook.
I paid attention to that bakelite gear because it had dried grease down in the bottom of the gear teeth, and it has a very close lash with the motor gear. It ran smooth before but now it runs better they did use a lithium type grease on that I can see where it's slung off this machine was used probably a few times each year when it was at the high school so it's very very clean and I can investigate it by looking at what was slung off from the factory.
@@ronalddaub9740
You had left another comment about the gear asking how strong the gear was.
I am not sure where the comment went but when I started to reply it was gone.
It is a very durable gear but you do need to be gently, it is possible to break it, depending on the amount of stress it has been put under over the years.
Yes many people use lithium grease on machines, it is a poor choice of grease to use as it will dry up hard as a rock.
When put on needle bars or joints it can lock a machine up.
Hi Richard, I was wondering if you could help me with my problem. I am trying to fill my bobbin and the bobbin will turn for about 5 seconds then it will stop and the machine starts beeping. I would grateful for any advice you can give me.
What machine are you having problems with?
Singer Precision 7444
@@SandPell123 When you start winding the bobbin does the needle move also ?
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 Yes, the needle does move and after about 2-3 seconds everything stops and machine starts beeping.
@@SandPell123
Ok cool this is a fairly common problem the clutch is not disengaging the needle bar which causes the machine to stop, then start beeping at you.
Do you have your manual? Need to determine if the clutch automatically disengages when you start winding the bobbin or if you have to push or pull on the handwheel to disengage the the clutch.
If you are not sure what procedure does the manual lay out for winding the bobbin?
NB020746, gold seal 301A
I thought that the handwheel gear was textolite not fiberglass. A mixture of Bakelite and cotton fibre.
You're correct, it is not fiberglass.
Would like the manuels

Great video. I (well, my wife) have SN NA413177
If my motor ever goes out I'll put a outside motor with a belt on it
I am not sure that would work. The 301 was not made to have an exterior motor. The electric plug is where the bracket would attach and there is no cut out around the handwheel for the belt.
