what i found the most interesting about boy parts is how irina tries so hard to shrug off the effects of the patriarchy on her. she dehumanizes every man around her, and there's that one scene that i found especially memorable-where it was implied she was raped by a man at a club but she denies it happened. i feel like her photography and agression towards men is a way of her trying to gain some power back, and that sentiment becomes especially clear in the final scenes where she was frustrated that she wasnt seen as dangerous/a threat by them. she was faced with the reality that no matter what she does she cant negate the harm the patriarchy causes her. this is why this book striked me as more nuanced than american psycho.
Interesting analysis and review. I’m upset if the gay Patrick Bateman thing is true. I’m tired of making the insecure queer a serial killer, it feels so gross and is hella problematic. That’s why I took Silence of the Lambs off my Tbr.
I'm not going to watch this video, but having read both books I would say NO. American psycho was the MOST BORING book I have ever read. All the brand name narcissistic BS. UGH. Boy parts was much less narcissistic and less graphic, too. I would say AP is insufferable and not worth a read; BP is pretty good and short.
