@@JustinMcVicar lol you geek head... it was not on a Jurassic Park level - which still beats like all CGI - but it was definitely a really realistic one. Why? Because it felt natural, they did not overuse it, and they used it in the right scenes when it was really necessary. The key-framing and motion blur you are talking about is bullshit, not that makes a CGI feel realistic and natural, but rather the coloring, the movements, the original lighting. You can make a "realistic looking" CGI with today's standards, but most of the time they do not feel as natural as in this movie. Good example the Jurassic Park vs Jurassic World. The latter one felt shit compared to the 25 years old original, because of the shit unnatural vivid colors - blue and purple and rainbowfart -, the shit natural lightings - mostly daylight - combined with cheap CGI lighting effects, and the unnatural fast camera movements - since the viewers' brain know that a camera/spectator could not move that fast, that way like the crappy overeffected overmoved CGI.
masks and costumes are really awesome, but animation was pretty cheap, even for this year. the "mechanical" unmasking version of the serie is better in my point of view
@@armann04 That is the thing the movie did much better then the series. In the movie you can clearly identify the first prime by the armor (Jackal instead of Eagle). In the tv series they changed it so you can only identify the first prime when he removes his helmet. Then you can see that he has a golden persing instead of standard tato. It felt a little bit like a demotion. Not only that , they only gave those costumes to Apophis and Horus. All other system lords had thier jaffa without helmets all the time. The only different ones ware Sokar's which later became Apophis and Anubis. The only differance between the jaffa of the other system lords ware the tatos. Its like they stopped caring and went with it. Same goes for the different languages. Only in season 1 they cared about trying to learn languages and communicating properly (as it will be in reality). Then everybody started understanding SG1 by default and speaking english. Same goes for Atlantis , they didnt even bother incorporating Latin as the main language of Pegasus. Ironically season 1 had the lowest rating , even tho it was the most emersive in terms of world buiding with different armors, worlds and languages. One of the greatest tv series but they cut a lot of corners.

Perhaps not. This is not the TV show. I'm not sure whether they are even called Goa'uld. They are not snake like. We don't even know how they posses people. They looked like Asgard but are not that either. So, I doubt that there is actual jumping. More like a full transfer from body to body with a device. The snake form was later made for the TV show.
This is 1996. Had they had the technology, they would surely used some - or rather, quite extensive - digital enhancement. It's Roland Emmerich, after all.
I love Ra's expression at 2:42, he's like, "The fuck you looking at?" - Jaye slayed the shit out of this role! You could tell even Kurt Russell was taken offguard by this guy's amazing presence.
i like to think that Oneil and Jackson body language here is veery well acted: Jackson is kneeling, afraid, maybe in awe of Ra, a living embodiment of his studies, while Oneil... Oneil just sees an enemy in Ra, his posture is less relaxed he's ready to spring in action ( as he tries to do shortly after ).
One thing I wish in the SG1 series is that they could've maybe delved a little more into Ra's role as the leader of the Goa'uld/Supreme System Lord, since he started it all and was the most powerful etc
SG1 was done without the blessings of the original creators of this movie. They actively disowned SG1, they hated the show that much and thought the show ruined their concept. Essentially this movie and SG1 are two separate and unrelated entities. Ra, in this film, was the last of his kind- there are no others.
I understand their reasons though. I like the movie and the series. But if you consider the backstory of the movie, where Ra was supposed to be the last of his kind, a member from a long lost dieing race looking for immortality. It probably was never supposed to have more than just one. But the series pretty much made him the de facto leader of a galactic empire ruled by the Goa'uld. They follow two different principles really.
Ryan, imagine you make something, then someone comes along, and takes your ideas and completely twists them and bends them into something else without consulting you at all? Just runs off with your stuff. Yeah, I think you'd disown it too.
Absolutely gave me _chills_ seeing Ra unmask himself for the first time and watching it here I _still_ get goosebumps. He doesn't even _say or do anything_ all that menacing in this scene beyond briefly intimidating Anubis, but you immediately understand that this is The Bad Guy.
Imagine the effect all this would have on people who were not trained from childhood to ask themselves, "Real or illusion? How was this done? What's the technology here?" People who did not grow up watching the Wizard ordering Dorothy to "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!"
I was just making an outfolding armor in blender, as I recalled this scene. Stargate is amongst my favorite and most inspiring movies in terms of VFX. Back then I have drawn countless flipbooks of the wormhole and these helmet animations. And now I can enjoy it over and over again and examine every frame. This warms my nerd-hearth. Looks like they combined the live action head turn with cutout stop motion. You can see the edges flickering. With Ra there is some morphing too. Love it to find clues of the crafts behind the scenes. It adds another dimension to the watching and is more memorable.
I still remember how impressive was this scene at the cinema. This movie became an instant classic for me. I also remember i watched at cinemas just because there were no tickets for "The Mask" which was our first option that day. At the end, it was way better than the histrionic comedy from Jim Carrey.
Both movies were my first experienciences in the cinema theater(6 years old at the time). I remembered I had a lot night dreams over those fantastic films.

I watched this movie as a kid and had such a crush on Ra, but watching it as an adult, the actor they chose for the role is even more fascinating. When I first watched this, he was older than me, which was attractive of course, but what fascinates me *now* is that he’s SO young, and looks more feminine than masculine in features. And yet his presence and aura is no less godlike, which is amazing. This statuesque boy is perfect to play an ancient alien God, because he looks beautiful and powerful and dangerous. A+ creative casting.
It’s all the more impressive because Jaye Davidson, even though he’d just gotten an Oscar nomination for _The Crying Game_ at the time, doesn’t like to act and only did this movie because he sarcastically asked the producers for $1 million and they actually agreed.
The crazy thing is, despite all the sci fi stuff, this is actually one of the more accurate depictions of ancient Egypt I've seen in a live action Hollywood film, down to the shaved head with sidelocks on the little boys and the nail guards on Ra. Gods of Egypt should have taken notes
@Pope McFartPop It was more or less the same race it is now. Go look at ancient Egyptian art depicting themselves and their enemies the Nubians. The Nubians WERE black and are depicted as such in their art. Their own people are depicted as a MUCH lighter skin tone, akin to modern Egypt. If you think the ancient Egyptians were black, you are deluding yourself. You can literally look at their art for proof. Seriously, it it that hard to understand? The further north in Europe you get, the paler peoples skin is. The further south you go, the darker the skin gets. Is it REALLY that hard to believe that a region in between Europe and central Africa had people with darker skin than Europeans and lighter than most Africans?

I saw this in the theater when I was about 10 years old. I remember seeing another movie that was in the theater next to it, and you could hear the rumble of the stargate through the walls. It was epic.
When Rah and his guards face masked transformed was probably the most terrifying scene of an Egyptian God in movie history I've ever seen. I still remember the first time I saw it, and it gave me goosebumps.
This was a great movie, but compared to movies today this looks like an entirely different genre. You had actual protagonists and antagonists, you had character arcs, you had a good story, and you had a lot of conflicts (against actual other beings and one’s self), and more. Special effects done well and mixed with good practical effects.
This scene makes total sense now, cause scientists are saying the pyramids could be huge piezzo electric generators.....Ra's ship just dock to recharge.....I am certain the bedside book of Roland Emmerich is Daniken's "Were the Gods Astronauts ?"
This was one of my favorite films combining two awesome subjects Ancient Egyptians and their mysterious pyramids and Ancient Aliens visiting Earth! Though there were a couple questions: - 1. Discovered in 1928 what delayed the military concern until 1994? 2. The cover stones middle 6 markings were in order of alignment and of course located on the Stargate's center ring should have allow them to just dial up those 6 symbols then just guess the 7th symbol which then would connect them to the other Stargate, not needing Dr. Jackson's constellation results. 3. Once the Robot went through to the other Galaxy wouldn't that transmission take 100's or 1000's of years to get back to Earth? 4. What powered the Stargate on the distant planet.
+Dan24 I know right? personally I don't see how people can prefer the SG1 over the film. Reducing Ra's species to a parasitic worm is a huge misstep IMO. And the guards wearing full body chainmail in SG1 doesn't look half as good as they looked here with just their headpiece and loincloth/skirt thingies... I'm sure there's enough muscle men they could have hired as extras to fit the part without needing to cover them head to foot. Jaye Davidson cast to play Ra in the film is perfect. He's a god damn beautiful man "no homo" :P not that's there's any thing wrong with being homo... I'll just shut up. Anyways despite being very feminine looking he pulls the menacing part off to a T. God damn SG1... don't even get me started on the snake heads. It's like they got a child to design that thing. I did quite like Atlantis though... probably because I wasn't constantly being reminded of how badly they messed up the Egyptian mythology themed side of things when the 1994 film got it so right. As for people saying SG1 had to reinvent Ra's specie and invent the "Goa'uld" to explain why there were other "system lords" becomes the film said Ra was the last of his race... well that's just bullshit. They either weren't paying attention or they never watched the original film. "a traveler... escaping from a dying world... specie becoming extinct" paraphrasing a bit, but nowhere does it say Ra was the last of his race. Once he found humans he could have taken some on his ship for his people to possess, or thousands through the stargate, or brought what was left of his people to earth. Only reasons I can see for them adding the "Goa'uld" was the series creators wanted to distinguish them from greys and use the greys as the "good" Asgardians. That or they were more fanes of "the puppet masters"... that came out the same year as stargate. Personally I don't think Goa'uld or Asgardians should have been introduced. They should have kept it purely Egyptian greys as Ra's specie. I would have begun a sequel series to the film with Osiris and Isis coming or sending forces to investigate the dissapearance/death of Ra. Had Seth leading a rebellion against Osiris and Isis assuming power. Loads of other ideals that would more closely reflect ancient Egyptian myths. Seth and his guards could have black stealth armour and be way more cool than the Tok'ra ever was in SG1. You could have introduce family drama by introducing Horus and throughing his parentage into question... maybe Isis wasn't as faithful to Osiris as official myth would have us believe...(so Horus will switch sides and have divided loyalties). Humans thrown in the mix trying to prevent the aliens going to war in our back yard as part of Ra's territory. If you must introduce a Samantha Carter type character... I originally through Sharon Stone would have been a good film version but hell it's been so long you may as well reboot the whole cast now so that doesn't matter. Doubt the originals like Kurt Russell and James Spader would want to reprise their roles. If they do then great. Instead of a total reboot, set a sequel after where 1994 film left off and have them pass the tourch to a new team if a follow up TV series is on the cards and the original film cast could cameo if they wanted. SG1 and Teal'c doesn't exist in my stargate vision :p Horus would more than fulfill that gap in my view. That's how I would do it... enough verbal dirrhea from me now XP sorry had this pent up in my for years.

While I liked SG1, I love the movie over the series ( although I haven't watched Atlantis really only like 2 or 3 episodes but I haven't watched Stargate Universe and I don't plan to). But the Stargate reboot isn't happening tho, and honestly I think I'm a bit glad of that fact. Because, what if they screw the whole movie? That's what I'm afraid of although I'd love to see what happened after or rather what was supposed to happen in the first place before the TV series started. Have you ever read the books by Bill Mccay? They look like a good read and they're canon from what I've read. But one thing I can't understand it's why the SG1 fans still try to connect the series with the original 1994 movie when obviously they don't have much to do. The Goaulds aren't a thing in the movie, nor the Jaffas are. Like, I think they simply haven't even bothered to watch the movie. Ra's guards are humans. No pouch. And none of the elements from SG1 are a thing in the movie. So I think it's a waste of time trying to connect each other when it's clear SG1 is a parallel universe. And I couldn't agree more with you about the snakes helmets. Apophis's guards always looked rather funny to me than intimidating ( like the dudes in the movie). And another thing I really didn't get to like was the language used by the Jaffas in the series. Well, aren't they supposed to speak ancient egyptian or a similar dialect? MrLTiger the first guard has a compartment on his right shoulder, it is just out of view when it retracts. The second guard has a compartment on the right...also just out of view.
Fot anyone interested, this isn't a normal Hatak ship. It's a Cheops Warship. Also, according to Stargate Wiki, Ra had possessed an Ancient Asgard named Famrir. That was the body he had when he was dying until he took the human boy in Egypt. The Tok Ra helped Famrir escape but he was scarred for life with Ra's memories. It is stated Ra wasn't a true Goa'uld. Instead he came from a race similar to the Ancients. It's possible Ra was kinda like Anubis, he started out as a Typical Goa'uld but Ascended. Or got close enough to ascension. Only unlike Anubis, he was able to keep that one body going young for eons. Something even a normal Goa'uld couldn't do. Also, he liked humans a lot. He had a weird liking for humans. He liked how they worshipped him. It wasn't like being worshipped by Unas or any other race. That's why even though he did have Jaffa, those particular Horus Guards are not Jaffa. They are humans from Abydos. The boy beating up O'Neill is named Anubis. And the other teen guard is called Horus. They both were raised in Abydos. Anubis is Ra's first Prime. And he preferred human guards to Jaffa. He understands human psychology and pretends to be a sort of Father figure to children. So he can use them as shields. And as one person on here pointed out : presumably for new hosts if anything should happen to the old host. He is more manipulative than regular Goa'uld.
For the sake of satisfying my curiosity, I want to see at least one scene where Richard Dean Anderson's face is digitally stitched onto Kurt Russell's Jack O'Neil and Michael Shanks' face is digitally stitched onto James Spader's Daniel Jackson.
The original author of Stargate, was an Egyptologist, who submitted the script, and it was rejected, but down the road they made the movie. He waited too long to sue for copyright infringement, let that be a lesson to all that the statute of limitations matters. It had so many great things in it that only someone steeped in the subject would think of.
Well you gotta remember, TV shows usually never have the budget of a major Hollywood movie, especially in the 90's. However, I do think the effects of the show got better in the later seasons.
The budget got considerable near the end, probably 7 figures an episode. In the episode where Mitchell and company save Teal'c from Baal's attempts to take over the Jaffa Council, they were able to do a 10 minute firefight sequence with nearly 40 people.
Watched Stargate (1994) and do not remember how many times , have BR director's version. For me (from time perspective) its still one of the best Sci-Fi movie . Special effects maybe are not high level (as we have now) but this move had a big potential. I watched all Stargate SG-1 series (have full dvd set), Stargate Atlantis (which was watchable but something missed). The Stargate Universe was a complete misunderstanding. In total - very nice show :) .

I know a lot of people like to complain about the lack of "jaffa' in Ra's enturage. But I look at it as he, being the current Supreme System Lord, had so much power that he could use regular (though, still exceptional) humans, as his entourage and guards.

The Arc was the very closest of the presence of God in a confined space, any form it takes, big or small, man can be in the direct presence of God. That's why the Arc was placed inside the temple, the Arc wasn't a telephone but a "covenant", hence why Aaron's staff and the 10 commandments were placed inside, then the mercy seat on top.
This was such a great villain introduction. The amount of pure dread that Ra brought into the movie cannot be described with words. Even before this epic, grandiose introduction, the eerie pyramid-shaped spacecraft landing, Ra's servants casually and suspensefully taking down a recon team of U.S. soldiers, and the scene where you briefly see Ra's hand appear out of the regeneration chamber make it clear that there's some kind of ancient yet advanced evil lurking in an otherwise optimistic sci-fi adventure film. Then we get this frickin' scene, where the protagonists are bested, captured, and brought before a 10,000 year old tyrant. Said tyrant makes it clear that he knew what the Colonel was up to, with an unsettling, deep, and commanding voice. Then we tragically watch Daniel's (apparent) death before our very eyes, and see the pure cowardice of Ra using the children as human shields. Then Ra releases his fighters to bomb a population's city even though said population had no way of knowing that the visitors were a threat to Ra's power. Ra was, in every sense of the word, intimidating.
It really is mind blowing and impressive. Especially if you watch it again and think about the meaning of it all, not just the special effects or what you see... James Spader is the one and only!
I always believed in real that some alien created us and used humanity as slave and then moved away. And after i have these ideas, i discovered this movie. This is very special movie for me from that moment on..
When The Anubis guard has a helmet on... he reminds me of Aknot from “The Fifth Element”. and when one of the Horus guards has a helmet on... they reminded me of the Mangalores from “The Fifth Element” also.

i like to think that Oneil and Jackson body language here is veery well acted: Jackson is kneeling, afraid, maybe in awe of Ra, a living embodiment of his studies, while Oneil... Oneil just sees an enemy in Ra, his posture is less relaxed he's ready to spring in action ( as he tries to do shortly after ).
One thing I wish in the SG1 series is that they could've maybe delved a little more into Ra's role as the leader of the Goa'uld/Supreme System Lord, since he started it all and was the most powerful etc
SG1 was done without the blessings of the original creators of this movie. They actively disowned SG1, they hated the show that much and thought the show ruined their concept. Essentially this movie and SG1 are two separate and unrelated entities. Ra, in this film, was the last of his kind- there are no others.

I understand their reasons though. I like the movie and the series. But if you consider the backstory of the movie, where Ra was supposed to be the last of his kind, a member from a long lost dieing race looking for immortality. It probably was never supposed to have more than just one. But the series pretty much made him the de facto leader of a galactic empire ruled by the Goa'uld. They follow two different principles really.
Ryan, imagine you make something, then someone comes along, and takes your ideas and completely twists them and bends them into something else without consulting you at all? Just runs off with your stuff.

Absolutely gave me _chills_ seeing Ra unmask himself for the first time and watching it here I _still_ get goosebumps. He doesn't even _say or do anything_ all that menacing in this scene beyond briefly intimidating Anubis, but you immediately understand that this is The Bad Guy.
Imagine the effect all this would have on people who were not trained from childhood to ask themselves, "Real or illusion? How was this done? What's the technology here?" People who did not grow up watching the Wizard ordering Dorothy to "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!"
The CGI helmet disappearing into his sideburns just makes me laugh out loud.

I was just making an outfolding armor in blender, as I recalled this scene.
Stargate is amongst my favorite and most inspiring movies in terms of VFX. Back then I have drawn countless flipbooks of the wormhole and these helmet animations. And now I can enjoy it over and over again and examine every frame. This warms my nerd-hearth.
Looks like they combined the live action head turn with cutout stop motion. You can see the edges flickering. With Ra there is some morphing too.
Love it to find clues of the crafts behind the scenes. It adds another dimension to the watching and is more memorable.
I still remember how impressive was this scene at the cinema. This movie became an instant classic for me. I also remember i watched at cinemas just because there were no tickets for "The Mask" which was our first option that day. At the end, it was way better than the histrionic comedy from Jim Carrey.
Both movies were my first experienciences in the cinema theater(6 years old at the time). I remembered I had a lot night dreams over those fantastic films.
The Mask had hot, young Cameron Diaz.
Y'know, you can praise both movies instead of tearing one down. They were both fantastic in their own way. And both stand the test of time.

I watched this movie as a kid and had such a crush on Ra, but watching it as an adult, the actor they chose for the role is even more fascinating.
When I first watched this, he was older than me, which was attractive of course, but what fascinates me *now* is that he’s SO young, and looks more feminine than masculine in features.
And yet his presence and aura is no less godlike, which is amazing. This statuesque boy is perfect to play an ancient alien God, because he looks beautiful and powerful and dangerous. A+ creative casting.
He almost reminds me of an elf from Lord of the Rings.
It’s all the more impressive because Jaye Davidson, even though he’d just gotten an Oscar nomination for _The Crying Game_ at the time, doesn’t like to act and only did this movie because he sarcastically asked the producers for $1 million and they actually agreed.

I saw this in the theater when I was about 10 years old. I remember seeing another movie that was in the theater next to it, and you could hear the rumble of the stargate through the walls. It was epic.
I would have been 7 when I went and it made a big impact on me. There are a few amazing scenes but who's actually watched the whole film again? :P

When Rah and his guards face masked transformed was probably the most terrifying scene of an Egyptian God in movie history I've ever seen. I still remember the first time I saw it, and it gave me goosebumps.
This was a great movie, but compared to movies today this looks like an entirely different genre.
You had actual protagonists and antagonists, you had character arcs, you had a good story, and you had a lot of conflicts (against actual other beings and one’s self), and more.
Special effects done well and mixed with good practical effects.

This was one of my favorite films combining two awesome subjects Ancient Egyptians and their mysterious pyramids and Ancient Aliens visiting Earth! Though there were a couple questions: - 1. Discovered in 1928 what delayed the military concern until 1994? 2. The cover stones middle 6 markings were in order of alignment and of course located on the Stargate's center ring should have allow them to just dial up those 6 symbols then just guess the 7th symbol which then would connect them to the other Stargate, not needing Dr. Jackson's constellation results. 3. Once the Robot went through to the other Galaxy wouldn't that transmission take 100's or 1000's of years to get back to Earth? 4. What powered the Stargate on the distant planet.
So good! Jaye Davidson is a legend. Would love to see this re-mastered with current technology or re-done.

+Dan24 I know right? personally I don't see how people can prefer the SG1 over the film. Reducing Ra's species to a parasitic worm is a huge misstep IMO. And the guards wearing full body chainmail in SG1 doesn't look half as good as they looked here with just their headpiece and loincloth/skirt thingies... I'm sure there's enough muscle men they could have hired as extras to fit the part without needing to cover them head to foot. Jaye Davidson cast to play Ra in the film is perfect. God damn SG1... don't even get me started on the snake heads. It's like they got a child to design that thing. I live in hope they'll reboot the whole thing one day and it be more faithful to the film and with the original creator's blessing unlike SG1. Sorry SG1 fans that's just my opinion. I did quite like Atlantis though... probably because I wasn't constantly being reminded of how badly they messed up the Egyptian mythology themed side of things when the 1994 film got it so right.
As for people saying SG1 had to reinvent Ra's specie and invent the "Goa'uld" to explain why there were other "system lords" becomes the film said Ra was the last of his race... well that's just bullshit. They either weren't paying attention or they never watched the original film.
"a traveler... escaping from a dying world... specie becoming extinct" paraphrasing a bit, but nowhere does it say Ra was the last of his race. Once he found humans he could have taken some on his ship for his people to possess, or thousands through the stargate, or brought what was left of his people to earth. Only reasons I can see for them adding the "Goa'uld" was the series creators wanted to distinguish them from greys and use the greys as the "good" Asgardians. That or they were more fanes of "the puppet masters"... that came out the same year as stargate. Personally I don't think Goa'uld or Asgardians should have been introduced. They should have kept it purely Egyptian greys as Ra's specie.
I would have begun a sequel series to the film with Osiris and Isis coming or sending forces to investigate the dissapearance/death of Ra. Had Seth leading a rebellion against Osiris and Isis assuming power. Loads of other ideals that would more closely reflect ancient Egyptian myths. Seth and his guards could have black stealth armour and be way more cool than the Tok'ra ever was in SG1. You could have introduce family drama by introducing Horus and throughing his parentage into question... maybe Isis wasn't as faithful to Osiris as official myth would have us believe...(so Horus will switch sides and have divided loyalties). Humans thrown in the mix trying to prevent the aliens going to war in our back yard as part of Ra's territory. If you must introduce a Samantha Carter type character... I originally through Sharon Stone would have been a good film version but hell it's been so long you may as well reboot the whole cast now so that doesn't matter. Doubt the originals like Kurt Russell and James Spader would want to reprise their roles. If they do then great. Instead of a total reboot, set a sequel after where 1994 film left off and have them pass the tourch to a new team if a follow up TV series is on the cards and the original film cast could cameo if they wanted. SG1 and Teal'c doesn't exist in my stargate vision :p Horus would more than fulfill that gap in my view.

While I liked SG1, I love the movie over the series ( although I haven't watched Atlantis really only like 2 or 3 episodes but I haven't watched Stargate Universe and I don't plan to). But the Stargate reboot isn't happening tho, and honestly I think I'm a bit glad of that fact. Because, what if they screw the whole movie? That's what I'm afraid of although I'd love to see what happened after or rather what was supposed to happen in the first place before the TV series started. Have you ever read the books by Bill Mccay? They look like a good read and they're canon from what I've read.
But one thing I can't understand it's why the SG1 fans still try to connect the series with the original 1994 movie when obviously they don't have much to do. The Goaulds aren't a thing in the movie, nor the Jaffas are. Like, I think they simply haven't even bothered to watch the movie. Ra's guards are humans. No pouch. And none of the elements from SG1 are a thing in the movie. So I think it's a waste of time trying to connect each other when it's clear SG1 is a parallel universe.
And I couldn't agree more with you about the snakes helmets. Apophis's guards always looked rather funny to me than intimidating ( like the dudes in the movie). And another thing I really didn't get to like was the language used by the Jaffas in the series. Well, aren't they supposed to speak ancient egyptian or a similar dialect? Instead they use random words and phrases like Shol'va or whatever and would yell JAFFA KREE just because of the heck of it. Well I'm being too picky I guess lol

Also, according to Stargate Wiki, Ra had possessed an Ancient Asgard named Famrir. That was the body he had when he was dying until he took the human boy in Egypt. The Tok Ra helped Famrir escape but he was scarred for life with Ra's memories. It is stated Ra wasn't a true Goa'uld. Instead he came from a race similar to the Ancients.
It's possible Ra was kinda like Anubis, he started out as a Typical Goa'uld but Ascended. Or got close enough to ascension. Only unlike Anubis, he was able to keep that one body going young for eons. Something even a normal Goa'uld couldn't do. Also, he liked humans a lot.
He had a weird liking for humans. He liked how they worshipped him. It wasn't like being worshipped by Unas or any other race. That's why even though he did have Jaffa, those particular Horus Guards are not Jaffa. They are humans from Abydos.
The boy beating up O'Neill is named Anubis. And the other teen guard is called Horus. They both were raised in Abydos. Anubis is Ra's first Prime. And he preferred human guards to Jaffa.
He understands human psychology and pretends to be a sort of Father figure to children. So he can use them as shields. And as one person on here pointed out : presumably for new hosts if anything should happen to the old host. He is more manipulative than regular Goa'uld.
So Kratos has to fight that too..

For the sake of satisfying my curiosity, I want to see at least one scene where Richard Dean Anderson's face is digitally stitched onto Kurt Russell's Jack O'Neil and Michael Shanks' face is digitally stitched onto James Spader's Daniel Jackson.
The original author of Stargate, was an Egyptologist, who submitted the script, and it was rejected, but down the road they made the movie. He waited too long to sue for copyright infringement, let that be a lesson to all that the statute of limitations matters. It had so many great things in it that only someone steeped in the subject would think of.
Its funny, when i was a kid i believed aliens built the pyramids long before stargate was out.

Well you gotta remember, TV shows usually never have the budget of a major Hollywood movie, especially in the 90's. However, I do think the effects of the show got better in the later seasons.

The budget got considerable near the end, probably 7 figures an episode. In the episode where Mitchell and company save Teal'c from Baal's attempts to take over the Jaffa Council, they were able to do a 10 minute firefight sequence with nearly 40 people.
Thanks to this movie we could watch years later one of the best sci fi series of all time: Stargate SG-1 !!!

Watched Stargate (1994) and do not remember how many times , have BR director's version. For me (from time perspective) its still one of the best Sci-Fi movie . Special effects maybe are not high level (as we have now) but this move had a big potential. I watched all Stargate SG-1 series (have full dvd set), Stargate Atlantis (which was watchable but something missed). The Stargate Universe was a complete misunderstanding. In total - very nice show :) .

I know a lot of people like to complain about the lack of "jaffa' in Ra's enturage. But I look at it as he, being the current Supreme System Lord, had so much power that he could use regular (though, still exceptional) humans, as his entourage and guards.

The Arc was the very closest of the presence of God in a confined space, any form it takes, big or small, man can be in the direct presence of God. That's why the Arc was placed inside the temple, the Arc wasn't a telephone but a "covenant", hence why Aaron's staff and the 10 commandments were placed inside, then the mercy seat on top.

Love this movie! especially my first time watching it when I was a kid at 8 yrs old.
This was such a great villain introduction. The amount of pure dread that Ra brought into the movie cannot be described with words. Even before this epic, grandiose introduction, the eerie pyramid-shaped spacecraft landing, Ra's servants casually and suspensefully taking down a recon team of U.S. soldiers, and the scene where you briefly see Ra's hand appear out of the regeneration chamber make it clear that there's some kind of ancient yet advanced evil lurking in an otherwise optimistic sci-fi adventure film. Then we get this frickin' scene, where the protagonists are bested, captured, and brought before a 10,000 year old tyrant. Said tyrant makes it clear that he knew what the Colonel was up to, with an unsettling, deep, and commanding voice. Then we tragically watch Daniel's (apparent) death before our very eyes, and see the pure cowardice of Ra using the children as human shields. Then Ra releases his fighters to bomb a population's city even though said population had no way of knowing that the visitors were a threat to Ra's power. Ra was, in every sense of the word, intimidating.
I love how Kurt Russell is not willing to hurt children.
