The Forgotten History of Rawalpindi’s Religious Heritage

- A city, once rich in cultural and religious diversity and an economic hub of its time suffered major historic and cultural erosion when its residents migrated because of the divide of the subcontinent. This young historian has set out to discover and restore the lost heritage of Rawalpindi, here are some of his interesting discoveries.

My beloved professor MM Oberai of IIT Kanpur, who died recently at the age of around 90, came from Rawalpindi in 1947. As I look upon these broken-down havelis, I think that these are places he must have known well. He was a gem of a person, just thinking of him makes my heart well up with tears. May he rest in peace.
Respected, is there any research work of your professor on UA-cam.
@@anwarnoor2473 He retired around 1990, much before the internet was popular. I remember during his retirement speech he quoted an Urdu couplet regarding his career at the institute, which said (I cannot remember the original), "How can one describe the love of a lifetime in a moment's words?" He belonged to a generation for which "research" was not a priority, at least in India, but the building of Institutions and good teaching of basic fundamentals was their goal. MMO did all that, and besides, was a person of sterling qualities, combining reason and compassion with firmness in the inculcation of high ideals in all his dealings with students.
well, the oberoi family migrated from chakwal distt.the only family who migrated through aero plane...
Yawr bara nam suna hai IIT ka

I am a sikh from potohari/ Pothwari Biradri, Yes he is correct Sikhs & Hindus of Rawalpindi were close to each other culturally prior to partition temples & gurudwaras were built close to each other , Hindu & sikh marriages were very common . There was an tradition among Hindu families of Rawalpindi of making their eldest son as a Sikh
Not just Rawalpindi but across Punjab, eldest son of Punjabi Hindus was brought up as Khalsa.
@@DonzaiNoHana But Rawalpindi & North west frontier province mei ye jyada hota bro
@@DonzaiNoHana in southern Punjab ( Multan etc ) majority of Punjabi khatris were hindus while in northern punjab ( Pothohar region) majority of Punjabi khatris were sikhs
@@DonzaiNoHana later these khatri Sikhs became much better Sikhs as compared to their jat counterparts, ( Even today majority of bhape'or khatri Sikhs don't shave their beared or cut their hair) they mainly use hair fixer to fix their beared .Now they don't even call themselves " khatris" they better call themselves as gursikhs
@@hr5581 In southern Punjab there were many Arora Sikhs but Khatris were mostly Hindus. In the Pothohar region, there was mix population of Khatris and Aroras who belonged to either Hindu or Sikh religion.

Rawalpindi is my forefathers city. Currently, I am living in Ludhiana Punjab.

Very interesting. My parents are from village near Kallar Syedan in Rawalpindi district. This young man has done is due diligence in maintaining the history of Rawalpindi. Bless him.

I have spend quiet a long period of my life in RWP albeit in cantt area however I have a very deep interest in the history of Rawalpindi when ever I visited raja Bazar I used to be amazed by the old buildings and I used to wonder how life would have been in pre 47 era I hope this boy will document the city history like we have documents on Lahore and Delhi

Rawalpindi region is quite fascinating. Texila comes under Rawalpindi division and district. Texila had oldest university in the world.
Em from Taxila :)
Taxila
It's original name was Takshashila
*Takshashila. The Brits anglicised that name to Taxila.
Oldest university is actually Nalanda in India
I used to drive past Bagh Sardaraan and was so curious about it. Partition is a human tragedy along with geographical, architectural and historical distortion. Beautiful post.
After winning Sindh and multan, the caliphate army moved forward but this time it came face to face with a joint coalition of indian kingdoms!! The joint army of indian kingdoms was commanded by bappa rawal and under his command the indians crushed the caliphate, forcing it to retreat back to iran. To mark this victory a city was built and that city was named " rawal pindi"
Rawalpindi means Rawal (the river that flows past it) and Pind (Village)
I’ve never heard the above legend about the naming of the city.

Rawal Pindi Ke Founder Hindu King Bappa Rawal The.
THIS CITY WAS WAY OLDER THAN HINDUS CAME HERE IN 1000 AD
Most of the Punjabi Khatris(Hindus and Sikhs) who settled down in Jammu,Delhi, Himachal were from West side of British Punjab.
Hindus and Sikhs esp. in West Punjab had this tradition called "Roti Beti di saanjh" means interfaith marriages within Khatri families.Hence, Common surnames Such as Ahuja, Oberoi,Bedi,Sodhi,Arora,Malhotra,Talwar,Sethi,Sahni,Berry,Chaddha,Kapoor,Behl,Thapar,Chopra,Khanna,Khosla,Chawla,Bhatia,Johar,Soni,Kohli,Gulati,Punj,Bhalla,Rai etc.
Very correct
They're one of the worst and rudest people i have ever met
Hope they stayed back there and didn't destroy our Delhi
Delhi is jat + gujjar land
Partition destroy cities culture lahore, karachi, Amritsar, Rawalpindi, delhi, kolkata and Dhaka.
Lahore and Rawal Pindi was the only place where three religion coexist together.
This thing even exist in delhi now but not like before partition.
I want these cities go back to their peak time.
Cities made by people.

Meri Dadi Ji ki Family Rawalpindi se hi Aye hai Jo Baad mai Indian Punjab ke Shri Chamkaur Sahib mai Abaad huye hai.
Same happened with Muslims of Jammu.
Muslim population of jammu was at that time(before 1947) was more then 65% but it was trimmed down to just 30% .
Violence happaned at both sides.
And we have to condem both .
No from what I know it was 35-40% now it's 10%
Jammu had considerable Muslim population true but Dogras(non muslim) and Pandits were occupying majority of the lands and important positions due to Dogra rule.
And first communal violence took place in pahadi areas(today's AJK) Hindus and Sikhs flooded Jammu region,Punjab from there and told People in Jammu what was happening there in Bagh,Kotli,Mirpur,Muzaffarabad only after that non Muslims started attacking Muslims in Jammu region.
This is why there was no communal riots in Kashmir valley ,the communal incidents took place in Jammu districts.
@@garimabisht459riots were started first from pakistan were punjab. jammu mai nihang sikhs or inke alawa khatri hindu or dogra logo ne ye attacks kiye te.
Why do you cry about Muslims but ignore the Hindus who are actually the originals including your ancestors.
Good Effort by TCM.
All the best to this young boy Hassan Tauseef. Short and a very well articulated research.
Do it same for Lahore...
Best wishes from this Indian fan of yours...
My maternal side is a Kashmiri refugee who settled in Rawalpindi around creation of Pakistan. We don't speak potohari or Kashmiri language but our roots are from Kashmir. I must say, Hassan is doing an amazing job 👍
Not just you but every Sheikh living in Rawalpindi is a actually from Kashmir.Even Sheikh Rasheed is also from Kashmir.
But why don't you speak pothwari/pahari?.. "Kashmiri is not spoken in Pakistan's side Kashmir except for neelum valley"
Really daring to utter the role Muslims played at the time of partition leading to erosion of cultural heritage of Rawalpindi. Usually we focus only on miseries we as Muslims endured and let go of the havoc we recked upon non-Muslims of that time.

Our family still has large nos of friends who are in touch regularly.
it is fascinating to know how much heritage and historical sites located in Rawalpindi. But the sad fact is that our governments and administration are so reluctant to not pay due attention to revive these sites for tourism. how much revenue would provide these heritage buildings, if governments worked to get back to these sites it's original shape. how negligent we are....
This is exactly what i tell my Hindu work mates. Killing of Muslims / Hindus / Sikhs was not about religion, but about looting.
It surely was an unfortunate incident. 😔
and why it happened??
cus of your sick cult and its mentality..
Hindus lost the most in partition , cus they were concentrated in the urban centres of northwest india
When the British walked out 1947 in an unprecedented manner and a year before the proclaimed deadline, collapse of law and order was a natural occurrence. Opportunists and thugs everywhere became looters and murder was free for all. If the British were not interested in the safety of the population then why did they come in the first place.
It was about religion only beacause if it was not about religion then only Hindus wouldn't have been k*lled in Ravalpindi. Only their houses wouldn't have been looted. Only Hindu temple wouldn't have been demolished. While Mosque stands as it is the temple was demolished bcz it was about religion.
You say otherwise because it was done by your people.
Yeah but why then hindu culture is completely eroded from pakistan and hindus which is micro-minority is still attacked in pakistan. These arguments are just given by muslims to justify attacks. Same story everywhere.
Brithishers also looted the india but they have not targeted the cultural and religious heritage.
Afghani refugee destroy Rawalpindi taxila north punjab
And they call these cities a part of Punjab while ignoring Hindkowan (Hazarywaal) community completely.

My fore fathers and my father was from rawalpindi in 1947
Rawalpindi was the birthplace of the 1947 genocide in Punjab. Rawalpindi district's peaceful Khatri and Arora Hindu and Sikh populations were systematically attacked in a pre-planned genocide in March 1947. Thousands of Sikhs and Hindus were slaughtered, their houses and businesses were burned and looted, women were raped, and the remaining population of Hindus and Sikhs were forced to flee to the eastern districts of Punjab. Mr. Jinnah and his Muslim League leaders did not even utter a single word to condemn this wholesale genocide of the minorities.

Read the real history of RawalPindi
King Bappa Rawal king of Mewar in 738 A.D defeated Arabs and Chased them away till todays Iran and he erected guard posts at every hundred kilometres, each with one thousand troops and headed by Rajput chiefs, so that the enemy cannot dream of striking again. Thus the Islamic invasion was successfully thwarted for more than four centuries till 1192. To further fortify the North West Frontier, he built a city by name, Rawalpindi [presently in Pakistan] and made that place his military base. Stationed there, he launched sixteen successful attacks in north west, thus expanding his kingdom of Mewar upto Iran.
RawalPindi even today is used as city of military base.
