Checking in this morning at 8 degrees with a fresh inch of snow, I too lament over the zone 5 plants I have tried but do not thrive and eventually succumb to a polar vortex such as English Lavender, Flowering Almond, Butterfly Bush, Camelia, Passion flowers. I am grateful for lilacs, nine barks, Asiatic and Oriental lilies, Phlox, Sedum, Hosta, Astillbe, etc. Janey's channel does make me wish I lived in a milder climate at times. Erin The Impatient Gardener is more my reality as is your channel Mya.
I live in zone 9, and there isn’t too much I wish I could grow; I have a lot of subtropical and tropical plants which I adore. However, I can’t grow smokebush. Growing up, my grandparents were in Illinois, and I was in love with their massive purple smokebush. I have tried several Japanese maples as well, and I don’t have right conditions for them. Here in Louisiana, they need complete shade and are still 50/50. They never make it for me.
Nice list! I have the callicarpa profusion beauty berry in my front yard and it’s my favorite plant in the winter! The purple berries are almost electric looking and persistent on the branches through the winter. Sometimes when it snows it’s absolutely incredible looking, wish I could show a picture of it. Currently in zone 8b, will be moving to zone 3 eventually (AK).
Oh I bet it is so beautiful! If you’d like to share a picture feel free to DM me on instagram or send an email! I have both linked in the description of the video.
There is some orange lupine varieties. Geums might be in zone 4, but it could survive. Some Heliopsis have orange tone flowers. They are in zone 3. Here in Finland, Europe, I live in zone 4-5. Plants are not always hardy, because we can have very cold without snow. Or very wet for weeks.
I have never even heard of Geums before. I looked them up and they are so beautiful! Thank you for the recommendation. Cold without snow is tough on plants for sure! The snow really keeps the plants insulated so it’s hard if you don’t get any to keep them warm. Thanks for watching!
some orange plants to try in zones 3&4 -Potentilla Tangerine, witch hazel, butterfly weed, globeflower, oriental poppies, tickseed, helenium, Orange You Awesome Echinacea, day lilies

Yes sometimes I wish I lived in a warmer zone as well, but then it snows and I’m glad I live where I do. I always forget how much I love the snow!
Great list ❄️☃️❄️☃️
Thank you!
