Harsa, a Shaiva in his early years, gradually became a great patron of Buddhism. As a devout Buddhist he convened a grand assembly at Kanauj to publicise the Mahayana doctrines. It is here that Harsa is said to make a bloody suppression of a revolt by the Brahmanas. After Kanauj, he held a great assembly at Prayaga and both the assemblies were attended by Hiuen Tsang and all the tributary princes, ministers, nobles, etc. Hiuen Tsang is said to have made a remark that Harsa was born at the behest of the Bodhisattva to punish Shashanka, a hater of Buddhist religion. He also cited a few instances of Shashanka's anti-Buddhist activities. But it may be mentioned that the flourishing condition of the Buddhist University at nalanda, where Hiuen Tsang himself studied for some time, and the existence of a number of monasteries in Shashanka's kingdom including the Raktamrttika-Mahavihara near Shashanka's capital Karnasuvarna, goes against the evidence of Hiuen Tsang.
In other words, it appears that the Chinese pilgrim, who enjoyed the patronage of Harsa, became partisan in his attitude towards the adversary of his patron.
Both Banabhatta the author of Harsha-charita and Hsüan-tsang were vocal in defaming the character of Sasanka. Both refer Sasanka as ruthless and wicked king; Hiuen Tsnag going one step forward accuses him to be completely intolerant towards Buddhists and charges that he was responsible for atrocities against Buddhists monks.
However that would not have been the case. Banabhatta-of course we understand, was under Harsha’s payroll and so he obviously will say awful things about his rival Sasanka.
But Hsüan-tsang for reasons unknown accuses Sasanka of all sorts of nuisance. As a matter of fact Sasanka was a Hindu, Shaivaite king. This theory that Sasanka was an intolerant King does not hold ground simply because of the presence of flourishing Buddhist institutions in the suburbs of his own capital Karnasubarna.
So there are indeed contesting ideas, but apparently there are signs of thriving Buddhist community here in Karnasubarna. It was for this reason that for many years archaeologists have tried to trace the land of Karnasubarna and the famous Raktamittrika Mahavihara. Their efforts bore fruit when an archaeological team under S R Das from the University of Calcutta in 1962 dug out the famous monastery from the village of Jadupur, twelve kilometers south-west of Berhampore. The place is called Rajbadidanga as this was once attributed to the ruins of King Karna’s palace but evidently it was the Raktamittrika Mahavihara. How did the archaeologists know that this was the same place where the grand and magnificent Vihara once stood? Well, they found seals with two lines of inscriptions:
1. Sri-Rakta(m)rttika-mahaviha
2. Riyarya-bhiksu-(Samgha)sya
The sealing also bore the Dharmachakrya-deer symbols. Before 1960’s the exact location of Raktamittrika Mahavihara was a matter of speculation among archeologists.
Hsüan-tsang referred the Raktamittrika Mahavihara as lo-to-no-chi. In another account we find the name Raktamittrika. Karnasubarna was a great centre of trade as well; it was beside the Bhagirathi a tributary of Ganges and in those times the legends of sea faring merchants occupied a prominent position in various literature as well. In fact the people of Gaud are said to be a sea-faring; an important finding supports this theory. One of the several inscriptions found in the Malay Peninsula refer to “the captain”, a Buddhist “Mahanavika”, Buddhagupta, who was a resident of “Raktamittrika”. It shows that Karnasubarna or Gauda as a whole had great trade connections as far as to the Malay Peninsula. Probably there was thriving community of Buddhist merchants like Buddhagupta who might have sought blessings of the monks before sailing off on a new journey.

Śaśāṅka ruled Bengal even before the Pālas. Śaśāṅka was an adversary to Harṣavardhana’s father and elder brother. This is the reason Bāṇabhaṭṭa-in his poem Harṣacarita-doesn’t give Śaśāṅka the prominence he deserves. In the Rohtasgarh Inscription, King Śaśāṅka has been called ‘Śrī-mahā-sāmanta-śaśāṅka.’ He was a great sāmanta (ruler, leader, general). He waged war against the strong king of Kānyakubja (Kannauj). He was originally from the Gauḍa-deśa (modern-day Bengal). Śaśāṅka waged war against the Maukharis. Śaśāṅka killed Gṛhavarma, who was Harṣavardhana’s brother-in-law (Rājyaśrī’s husband) and the chief of the Maukharis. Harṣavardhana’s elder brother, Rājyavardhana fought against Śaśāṅka and lost. Harṣavardhana too waged war against Śaśāṅka but we’re unsure if he won or lost. Bāṇabhaṭṭa’s Harṣacarita is silent on this episode. According to the Buddhist treatise Manjuśrī, Harṣavardhana’s attack on Śaśāṅka hardly caused a dent and it wasn’t possible to bring him under control. Due to the lack of historical records, we don’t get complete information about great heroes like Śaśāṅka. Our people have not properly recorded several episodes from our history. Sometimes in traditional accounts, we get a lot of details that are completely irrelevant to us. Useless bits of information are available aplenty. In this manner, a deficiency in our recording of history and our lack of systematic documentation has often troubled the writers of history and continue to do so. According to Xuanzang, Śaśāṅka chopped down the Bodhi tree in Gayā and ordered the removal of an image of Buddha from a neighbouring temple. Writing about this, R. C. Majumdar says in The History and Culture of the Indian People (Volume 3, pp. 80-81), “These and other stories of persecution of Buddhism by Śaśāṅka cannot be accepted as true, without independent testimony. Besides, the flourishing condition of Buddhism in the capital-city of Śaśāṅka, as described by Hiuen Tsang, is hardly compatible with the view that he was a religious bigot and a cruel persecutor of Buddhism.” We find no records to show that Śaśāṅka destroyed Buddhism. It is because of a few unenlightened bigots, who in a bid to win over the hearts of their sectarian friends, have hurled accusations at certain kings of harming their sect, while in fact, those kings were tolerant and broad-minded. Such wild accusations have been hurled at the Cholas too. [For instance, in later Śrīvaiṣṇava literature, Krimikanta Chola is painted as a hater of Vaiṣṇavism and a persecutor of Śrīvaiṣṇavas. This has been proved to be historically incorrect. Yet Kamal Haasan deviously used this bit of spurious information in his Dasavathaaram.] When we see this, it becomes evident that Śaśāṅka was not a Buddhism-hater. In fact, it is unlikely that any king who adhered to Sanātana Dharma ever hated Buddhists. At any rate, it is the neo-Buddhists who have ascribed evil to our country and our tradition of kṣātra; the reason for that being their deep-rooted jealousy towards Sanātana Dharma and their extreme hatred. Majumdar writes, “… [Śaśāṅka] must be regarded as the first great king of Bengal. He had not only made Gauḍa an independent state, but extended its authority over the whole of Southern Bihār and Orissa. He even made a bold bid for the empire of Northern India. He thus laid the foundations of that policy on which the Pālas later built up their vast empire. If he had had a friendly biographer like Bāṇa or Hieun Tsang, he would probably have appeared to posterity almost as brilliant as Harshavardhana. But as it is, his fair name and fame have vanished and posterity knows him only as the cowardly murderer of Rajyavardhana and a cruel persecutor of Buddhism.” (p. 81) .
जय बिहार जय हिन्द ❤🎉
Ab Phir Nalanda University worlds Best and Largest University banega !!❤
