MTV Europe was actually only normal FreeTV from February 10th, 1989 to June 30th, 1995, because it was only after switching to the ASTRA satellites that one became independent of cable network operators, legislators and exotic (expensive) solutions for satellite reception. When I put "my" (85 cm) community satellite system into operation in Hamburg in autumn 1991, it should have been approved by the Bundespost (THE cable network operator).
It was a different world -- and a different MTV -- back then.
