The gravity gun is way more interesting in deathmatch than it is in singleplayer. There's more tech involving the gravity gun than what you covered in the video. Not only can you use it to make your grenades stronger, but you can also use it to greatly speed up the combine rifle's alt-fire energy ball. You can also use it to boost jump off of certain physics objects. And on top of that there's the yo-yo technique where you can fake people out by launching an object and then immediately grabbing it again. Both Half-Life deathmatch games are underrated and show how much cooler arena shooters can be when you don't just copy Quake 3 over and over again.
Wow wow wow! I didn't even know about those things! I clearly only scratched the surface here! Half Life Deathmatch games really are something special and the arena shooter genre is stagnating because everyone essentially just copies Quake or Unreal Tournament. If more people just iterated on the formula, we would maybe have a less stagnating shooter scene if some innovations were thought of. Maybe this is why HL2DM still has such a dedicated following of players? The game scratches an itch they cannot get rid of anywhere else!
@@Cheecken Another neat trick is that the crossbow bolt can actually ricochet around corners if you find the right angle. Since the crossbow bolt does absurd damage and has a gigantic hitbox this is actually pretty useful.
@@irvingforbush the crossbow bolt actually has a very small hitbox, in the game's units, the difference is that it can do some weird hits as projectiles are not lag compensated (which normal guns are) the non-lagcompensated projectiles include the rpg, grenade, any prop you launch and the bolt about the gravity gun, it actually resets the nade's timer so you can indefinitely "cook" a grenade by dropping it and picking it up again
I don’t normally play fps games like this, but one of my friends convinced our whole group to buy it and play together and it’s the most fun I’ve had in a game in such a long time.
Yeah, this game kicks ass..! I tried it the other day, for the first time since it was new, and it quickly became my favorite fast paced shooter game. I dont play such games a lot though, since a lot of the newer games (like Apex Legends) just dont appeal to me. Black Mesa is also pretty cool, even though the skilled players have a pretty huge advantage with the Tau/Gauss cannon jumps. But i know im a complete noob, and dont compare myself to others, so im happy if i just get a single kill on one of those guys 😅
Have you considered making a review about Ricochet? It's pretty unique game, in my opinion. It's strange and unfinished (though have worknig mechanics), but unique. Sometimes you can even meet a company of real people there.
I played this game competitively for a year, (HL2:DM CAL and Warzone with Team V and later Evil Empire under the name O-Dog). HL2:DM had the potential to be one of the greatest arena shooters of all time if it had gotten the TLC from Valve that it deserved. I found out recently that it was made by one dude who worked at Valve in a week and Valve had no intention of even having a multiplayer for HL2. The possibilities with the weapons and movement are unreal... watch some old school frag movies or CAL matches from back in HL2:DM's competitive heyday in 2007-2009 or even some recent matches from the current community on HL2DM TV. However, movement should have been better/easier to pull off, the default config should have been better, and the learning curve could have been smoothed out a bit while still retaining the challenge and possibilities though.
Really underrated and fun game honestly. Wish more multiplayer games were more physics focused like this one. Too bad there are some strange lame custom servers with infinite ammo, low grav and all that crap. Other than that, it's a fun time, but its better if you buy this in the half life complete bundle. 7/10
I am not sure if CS Source would make sense in the Dead Game Review format, as the game is still played by thousands of people. I might look into Condition Zero and Counter Strike Nexon though!
You only joined noob servers in this video 😁 The game is not dead although many of the servers in server browser are fake and full of bots (fastpath and its clones), and noob servers with strange modifications (high kill, low grav and other nonsense). Come play with us on SF match server where the real action is these days. There are still cups and high level players there playing almost every night :)
Never had a chance to try this game yet. Also, it seems like Half-Life 1's multiplayer is much more active than HL2DM. But also there are too many cheaters in HL1MP...for some unknown and stupid reason. P.S. Have you tried Deathmatch Classic? For those who don't know - DM Classic is NOT HL1DM, but is a remake of Quake 1 MP (!) on GoldSrc engine.
Haha, I did actually play Deathmatch Classic years back! I enjoyed it personally, but my friends a little less. But hey, it is Quake, you can NEVER go wrong with Quake! And yeah I did have that impression too a while back. Half Life Deathmatch is also really fun, but I think Half Life 2 Deathmatch got a leg up here as it offers a gameplay gimmick that no other arena shooter offers, which is of course the gravity gun based gameplay! Deathmatch Classic and HL:DM (and HL:DM Source) are all on my bucket list so at some point next year maybe I will have them all covered :) Thank you for watching!
@@Cheecken > it is Quake I never played Quake 1, especially multiplayer, so i can't be sure, BUT comparing to Quake 3 Arena, Quake Live (i played very little cuz it's d%%d, but there ARE some difference in mechanics compared to Q3A), and Quake Champions - DM Classic doesn't feel like Quake to me. It's more like HL-1, except it has Q-1 weapons and levels (BTW, Q1DM6 was added in QC in its low-poly pixelated state on Q1 25th anniversary, and that is the only map i can take 1st place on instagib in QC, because of the map's design). I don't feel the flow or anything else close to Q3A in DM Classic, so to me it's more like a mod for HL-1 multiplayer. It's probably fine, but i have very little experience playing it, due to 0 online, and dumb bots on empty servers. > you can NEVER go wrong with Quake Oh, i think you can. Just like they did with Quake Champions (which is not even Id Software's or Id-Tech based product, so no one can fix it even 5 years later). I can discuss all of QC problems for hours, and i'd rather play QL instead, but unfortunately all of quake player base is now on QC, so i have to stick to this Early AAAccess MOBA peepee poopoo masterpiece. > it offers a gameplay gimmick that no other arena shooter offers I agree on that, cuz gravity gun + physics is a really unique thing in gaming. But it's a shame no one cares about it, except for Valve's hardcore fans, even though it's one of the most popular series of games ever. But...on the other hand - Valve don't really do anything about their own games, because why bother with the support, if they have the "auto loot money" option enabled by default? (because of Steam, Dota 2 and CS:GO cosmetics)
@@JenyaIsJustChilling Quake 1 is quite different to Quake 3! I felt like Deathmatch Classic essentially felt rather close to the first Quake's multiplayer, maybe just a little slower. And yeah Quake Champions was a blunder, but what I meant with "you can never go wrong with Quake" is that the core of the Quake series is very strong and even if a game essentially just immitates that core, it can be fun! Sadly the new ways of selling games is pretty much what Valve implemented years past in TF2 to begin with. We cannot really get rid of the live service model, but games could do better. I liked Unreal Tournament 4's monetisation model, and I also like the idea of a free to play arena shooter, the big question though is, how can developers attract bigger crowds of people?
@@Cheecken ok, i see your point with Quake. Not gonna argue, since you have much more experience (basically, i started my PVP online gaming in mid january 2021, because before that i didn't have a proper PC with ok specs, plus due to mental issues i rarely played and especially FINISHED any games, even though i was always interested in gaming). And speaking about attraction of new players to AFPS - no idea, to be honest... I thought for a while that it could be partially solved with money (very active marketing), so they could attract lots of people through "hey look! new and shiny, and hardcore thing with g%ts and explosions is out now! the father of e-sports is back! show off your skill and unlock your true potential" and other ad-stuff. (BTW, Epic Games could do that easily now, with all their resources, but...they don't and they are not interested. RIP UT4.) But due to those games' nature, new players keep on bumping into veterans and other no-life gamers, and having bad experience because of this. And it keeps on snowballing endlessly. New people join - old players don't let them have fun and dominate them every second - new people leave. Not to mention that game's atmosphere and over-all feel can be heavy, dark and unfriendly. Combine this with no-sleep-g%ng in every single match, and all you'll have is stress and frustration.
severely underrated
