Being African American, I hold no illusions about the negativity others at home and abroad have for me. At this point, I'm looking for a country that has affordable accommodations, quality low cost health-care, safe, with good infrastructure.
Hey there sjw, you have a lot of options. I would start with a list of wants and needs. Then do as much research on the objective features of each country; general cost of living, healthcare quality and costs, tax scheme, ease of residency VISA, and if interested a pathway to permanent residency or citizenship. Here are some other resources that might help your journey: bit.ly/OBUresources
Glad you enjoyed it, we love the markets here too. That was one of the selling points for s. Europe. We were here in 2018 during the holidays and we loved all of the festivities.
I differ from the comments regarding Africans not viewing us as brothers and sisters. I have traveled to 7 African countries and have received nothing but warm welcomes and invitations to relocate there. I have now even formed a business partnership there. As with anything, everyone is entitled to their own opinion based on their experience and needs.
That has not been my experience, unfortunately. But as we said we're not talking about EVERYONE on the Continent. We were very well received in SA - no surprise because of their recent history. And as we said, we know African Americans who love living on the Continent. But not only have we experienced less than hospitable treatment, we know others who were treated as "others" and/or walking wallets. No place is perfect - because people reside there. 🤣
I would love to be incorrect, but unfortunately that has NOT been my experience. For the immigrants that I know, they told me how they felt about African Americans when they first arrived in the states. they were afraid of us and didn't think that we had a true culture, morals, or work ethic, etc. These are the words that THEY USED. The misinformation put out by the ubiquitous US media is global - so of course they believe what the media says about us. After living in the US for a while - many change their minds about us and realize they've been lied to. But some, who stay only within their community, continue to look at us with suspicion.
I love you guys. You keep it real and plain spoken. And you are living an exampled life. And thank you for that. I'm a Black American and I swear it's wonderful thing to be evolved and true to myself. I haven't decided which country will be my next home but it will be in Europe. And I'm considering France, Portugal and the Netherlands. I want to be where I fit it. Thank you for being great examples.
Hey there Rough Rider, thank you so much for watching and for adding to the conversation. 💕. I would start with a list of wants and needs. @@OurBlackUtopia You guys are an example of God's favor. Thank you for your input and kindness. I haven't ruled out Portugal. To tell you the truth I need to do a few trips to Europe capitals before making up my mind. Many places on paper can look like the best fit. Only way to know for sure is to try a place on and see how it fits. Thanks again.
You're absolutely right. Make sure you also look at the tax scheme, and time to permanent residency or citizenship. Also look to see if there are Black or POC expat/immigrant Facebook groups - these folks will help soften your landing. 😉
I returned from Lisbon 2 days ago. It's a beautiful place with lots of history. I did make mention of the gravity. I want to visit again because there's so much I didn't get a chance to see in 6 days.
Hey there, Thank you so much for watching and for adding to the conversation. 💕. We learned on our first international trip that the American version of a vacation is not NEARLY enough time. 6 days is fine on a resort that you never or rarely leave. But in a cosmopolitan city like Lisbon - after 1 month we hadn't scratched the surface. 🤷🏽♀️
Hello Blissful, thank you so much for watching and for adding to the conversation. 💕 - indeed - we only get one shot at this thing called life - live it to the fullest.
Thank you Yokota! 🥂 Boa Ano Novo & Feliz Año Nuevo 🎊 to you too! (sorry for the delay in responding YT - always flags comments that start with a hashtag 🤷🏽♀️)
Thank you Carol - there is no recovery from a life of bad decisions followed by current bad decisions. 😢 Just hoping that once I get her into assisted living, the last part of her life is better than it would've been. 🤷🏽♀️
Hey PT, thank you so much for watching and for adding to the conversation with more information 💕. That's good to know - we will have to identify some for future reference.
It's so refreshing to hear such a sound discussion about Africa. As much as it may hurt our feelings, Africans don't owe us fellowship. There has never been a unified Africa. We are definitely "new Africans," but we will never again be continental Africans. We finally have to embrace what the Maafa made of us and build from there.
Hey goldenwriter - unfortunately you're right. Obviously not ALL Africans on the continent think of us as 100% "the other" - but too many do. Everyone who wishes should experience the different countries on the continent - and see how it feels to them. For us it was hit and miss.
@OurBlackUtopia I completely understand. My husband and I are looking forward to learning more from you guys about Portugal. I thoroughly enjoy all of your videos. Portugal looks like home. Thank you!!!
Awww, thank you 🥰 and thank you so much for watching. Let us know how else we can help your journey. In the meantime here are some resources that might help: bit.ly/OBUresources 😁
Happy Holidays from Beverly in the future! I loved your video; reminds me of my time at the Christmas Markets in Germany a few years. 🙂 Anthony and I are expecting to be there in Lisbon this March, and we will be looking forward to reaching out and making contact with you. if you would like anything in particular gifted from here (Sacramento), let me know; I think you have our email from our consultation this past summer. Yes, Yoga for couples; we try for at least 3 times per week, but once is could, too! 🙂Feliz Ano Novo!
Hey Beverly, as always, thank you so much for watching. Send us an email a few weeks before you arrive and if we're in town we'd love to meet up. Thank you for offering to bring something from the States. Unfortunately, we have to go back next month so we will be bringing back a few things that are too expensive here or hard to find. By the time you're getting ready to come - we will know if we've forgotten anything. 😆. Looking forward to seeing you two IRL
If you look at the Patient Bill of Rights, at the end, it asks if they can have right to see your test results and who else su h as insurance company, relative, etc., in the U.S. We just usually sign it without reading it and this is what gives out doctors the rights to see your records.
Awww, that makes sense. Not only that when I got tests and other clinics, they always asked who to send the results to. Here, I leave with most of the results in my hand. 😳
The main reason I didn't retire to the Continent of Africa is because of the distance from family in the U.S. but I regularly visit and am headed to South Africa in February 2024. I live in the Central American country of Panama.
If you don't go to the areas with abject poverty in the US, why would you do that anywhere else? I advise people to go see for themselves areas that they are interested in including some of the 50 plus countries in Africa. No two are alike and you may be surprised.
You cannot avoid it in some countries - there's to much of it. Abject poverty in the US looks a lot different - unless you're in the rural south so far a way from the major highways that most never come in contact with you. Homelessness not withstanding - abject poverty in the US doesn't tend to mean a makeshift house with no electricity or plumbing. It's too much and at this point in my life I cannot take the stress of seeing people who look like me having to live that way and I'm too tired to fight for change. That's what the US does to its people...it wears us the 🤬 out.
Hello Halisi & Ric, my daughter and I are here in portugual visiting from the USA and Germany until Jan 1 how do we connect to folks and activities while here?
Hey Gayle, join the FB groups to see what's going on and where the parties are. Black in Portugal and POCs in Portugal are the main ones. Next time, let us know before you come and perhaps we can have coffee. 😉
Hello lovely people. We will be in Portugal in September. Can we buy you dinner to indulge us in moving abroad? I'm trying to relocate my 70 year old mother to somewhere better.
Olá Embrace the Juander - send us an email, hello@ourblackutopia.com, a few weeks before you arrive and if we're in town we would be happy to have coffee or break bread. 🥰

Absolutely not. In the city, there's no room for huge stores like that. Here the cottage industry is alive and well and you just have to walk your neighborhood to find all of the hidden gems where you can find what you need. Some will look like a mom and pop version of the Dollar Store - but we can find everything that we need within walking distance.😉
