I'll be going through some definitions of what an 'it' bag it and then we'll go through 9 potential 'it' bags to determine if they really reach it bag status. I think the Marc Jacob The Tote bag should be added to the list. Its been pretty popular for a few years and worth the price.
It’s a good bag!
I tend to avoid buying it bags because their connection to "a moment in time" often means that they look dated once that moment passes. I'm not one to sell bags etc, so I buy bags to incorporate into my wardrobe for the long haul. Maybe that's why I really like the Prada Cleo (haven't bought one yet) because it's on trend but isn't as instantly associated with a particular "moment."
It's also interesting to see it bags that get brought back with varying longevity. The Fendi baguette was totally an it bag from the SATC days, and has been brought back with great success. The Dior saddle bag was an early aughts it bag, but the attempt to bring it back really petered out (only influencers who got it for free wore it)

Dionysus and marmont are classics for Gucci, they aren’t going away. Gucci is coming out with the same and refreshed styles..definitely a Gucci classic. Some might be sick of them but they are classics.
They are both great, user friendly bags.

I feel like social media and the bags that are shown there is one thing. But in real life it is so much more interesting to see people wearing luxury brands. I feel like these days Hermes Birkin and Kelly just is the most IT bag, even if you have the most neutural color, it still has that wow effect whenever I see one 🧡💜🎀

Many influencers say The Gucci Marmont is out but I see it a lot in real life. It’s still a pretty popular alternative to the classic flap. and has an edge making the chain mate. All the classic flap alternatives are with a shiny chain the Gucci Marmont did it with Mate chain and hardware
Your pov is always on point. I feel like the Le Chiquito started TBE & is the epitome of an IT bag, it’s uniqueness at the time. There was no other like it.

The Baalenciaga one I think is an IT bag within the younger generation bubble, it's also something I'd think is fake if I didn't know or if I see a fake I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The Cleo I think is for people who want to be trendy but still be able to wear the bag when the trend passes

So are you seeing a lot of the Chanel 19 being carried in NY, Cassie? Cause I can’t remember the last time I saw someone carrying one here in the Southern U.S. I live in Georgia, the city of Atlanta. And my city is poppin! We are called the ‘Mecca of the South’. We rock the latest fashion trends, latest hairdos, latest cars, and tons of celebs in Hip Hop and Hollywood live here. And the Chanel 19 and the Chanel Boy Bag are never seen. This is actually my first time hearing someone bring it up as an It Bag. Style Hard did her list of It Bags, too, and Chanel 19 wasn’t mentioned neither. The Chanel Trashbag and the Balenciaga bag is all I’ve been hearing & seeing. I see a few Telfar handbags, but the main ones I see regularly are Chanel Classic flap, Hermes Birkin, Hermes Kelly, YSL LouLou, and Balenciaga Hour Glass. I agree the Hermes Birkin and Kelly have lost exclusivity. I feel it’s due to social media and the pre owned market. The pre owned market has made them more attainable. I purchased my red Hermes Birkin 30 from off Fashionphiles after going to the store and told the difficult process of getting one brand new. I wasn’t about to go,thru all that for a Birkin. I caught my Birkin for a steal! Mint condition, like it was never carried! Came with the box, dust bag, and original receipt. My Kelly was purchased for me as a birthday gift, brand new, by one of my longtime clients. Great video!

I feel like the resurgence of Hermes is due to the influencers and the amount of the money they earn and how much they can afford.
10 yrs ago, they have all started with high street brands and slowly moved towards high priced items. The more expensive the bag, it means she ears more and higher she’s on the list.

I think the chanel 22 has potential, but with all the defects/return drama surrounding it, it falls short. Might just be an iconic bag, but iconic for the wrong reasons 😂

As for the Telfar tote, my second one just arrived yesterday. I ordered it during the 3rd week of September through the Telfar Rainbow tote bag offer. It was $222.72 total for a size medium. The other one that I have was bought at one of the Telfar drops in 2020, I think it was.
The Telfar tote bag serves the function that it needs to serve and I love the long double handle straps along with the shorter ones on the same tote. Very versatile. Plus, it comes in a variety of sizes and a rainbow of colors.
Personally, I have two different concepts of "It" bags. One is what I call the "Quick-It" It's the "It" bag that folks get excited about, but then after about a year, the excitement is either gone or dwindling. Then, there's my second, "It" bag concept which I call the "Got-It" category. Those are the ones that I feel the designers got right (got it right) and the bags will stand the test of time.
As for two of the so-called, "It" bags that I personally own, I would put the Telfar tote, the Loewe Puzzle, and Brandon Blackwood bags in that category. I think bags in that category will have longevity into many more years. And since today at 12PM Eastern time, was the Fall Collection Drop for Brandon Blackwood, there are a lot of gorgeous "It" bags, but ones that I think have longevity. I ordered the new Bamboo B Micro Mini bag which is full of , "Got-It" fabulosity. I will have that bag for many years to come. I was awake, up, and online when the Fall Collection dropped this morning at 9AM my time.
As for the Bottega Jodi, it's definitely an "It" bag although it's not for me. But, I think it will have holding power in that it's re-done, from season to season, in different textures and colors on the same Jodi style.
As for the Saint Laurent Icare bag, it's an "It" bag for now, but I don't know how long it will be an "It" bag due to the size. I remember when the YSL Downtown was an "It" bag as I had two of them, but the Downtown eventually fizzled out. I eventually sold both of mine as they were big and I no longer wanted to carry such a big and heavy bag.
As for Jacquemus, although the Le Chiquito is an "It" bag for now, I think it will also fizzle out. I went for the Le Grand Bambino instead which I feel will have a much longer bag life.
As for Hermes bags in general, they have staying power and will continue to be sought after at some level.

I think there's a disconnect between what designers/influencers/magazines tell us are 'It' bags, and what 'normal' people consider them to be. I think in real life, bags have a faaaar longer shelf life and I know lots of people who would consider a Gucci Marmont or an LV Neverful to still be 'hot bags'. They're not fast fashion for most of us, as some of the big unboxing channels seem to promote 😊

I agree the Cleo is not a IT bag rn (arguably it was more so when it came out) but it was love at first sight for me! I saw its profile on an ig photo and commented asking what it was- which I had never done before. I love its patent leather and slanted bottom. It screamed classic yet futuristic to me

I agree with your choices. I think what also killed popularity of the Chanel 22 was quality issues for a not significant amount of people.

I would never carry a large bag but for some reason I love the look of that massive YSL! I was in Paris once and this very chic lady (like every Parisian ever born) was carrying this huge red patent leather tote much like the YSL and I’ve never forgotten her… as I waited behind her for my tart framboise I speculated about all of the glorious things that might be in that beauty !! My issue with the Birkin and the Kelly (aside from the price point and how I genuinely don't feel the designs) is that almost all influencers and celebrities have made their bag collections almost exclusively about those two bags (with some Chanel flaps thrown in). Almost every photo and video features them. It's boring at this point, always the same two bags on "every(influencer/rich girl with social media)body"

unpopular opinion: I wanted a silver night-out bag but I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend typical luxury prices as I didn’t know how much use I would get out of it. The small telfar shopping bag seemed like a great option, and I almost bought it… and then I saw it in person… and I’m so glad I didn’t. To me the quality just isn’t there, and I wonder if hype is the ONLY thing carrying the bag’s popularity. No shade to anyone that has it! And I’d be totally interested to hear from people who have it and love it and be proven wrong! But for me it’s one on your list that is an It bag only bc it is an It bag…if that makes sense lol. I've had both the small and medium Telfar bags and I think you're right about the small, the inside snap is cheap/doesn't stay closed and overall didn't seem worth the money. I ended up selling it. I love the medium though. It seems sturdier and more well made than the small. It's a great work bag.

I think it’s also important to know what the bag’s purpose is. It’s a tote bag made for day to day things. I bought two smalls and gave one to my sister because I realized I need a bigger bag BUT the medium was too big for me 😂
However, I do want to get the Large for travel purposes. I don’t think Telfar shopping bag was meant as a “going out” bag. It just happens to be small enough for the girls and gworls to take out lol

Yes exactly. You tube and all social media made it wayyy more than it actually is. I remember my grandma carrying a Birkin. No woman under 40 that we knew would ever think of carrying that. Now so popular. It’s really strange to see how it’s evolved into what it is.

I think the title of your video, and the research behind it, is VERY interesting. It’s easy to lose the “2022” part while the mind slides over into “classic”. Huge difference, obviously, as you so astutely point out. I just can’t dig into my vocabulary deeply enough to describe how much I loathe the La Cagole and the Chanel 22. Or how much I love the Icare and Kelly. Or how indifferent I am to the Prada raffia and the Telfar anything (someone needs to carefully explain the popularity of the latter to this old(er) lady.) I always thought “it” bags as trendy “now” bags so was surprised you included the Hermes Birkin and Kelly bags. I’ve loved them since I can remember and I consider them to be a “classic”; timeless bags. But you’re right that in recent years, with the rise of social media, there are so many youtubers (before it was just celebrities because so called “influencers” didn’t exist back then so could only see it in like magazines) owning them and giving how to and tips and tricks to score which make it even more competitive. I feel bitter sweet as one day I’d love to own one but with all of these hypes, it’s more difficult to actually buy as a non-UA-cam, non-influencer individual and the second hand market prices are crazy... 🙃

I owned the original back in the day, so I hesitated to jump in when it started getting popular again. I remember a time when I almost bought the Jodie for $1300. I knew it was going to blow up but it took some years for it to reach its height in popularity. I still don’t think it’s necessary practical for me and my lifestyle but definitely an it bag!!

Love your videos especially when you discuss bag trends! Personally, I wouldn't say that the YSL is an IT bag because I don't think that it is as relevant and popular as the other it bags probably due to it big size, I think smaller/medium bags naturally have more potential in becoming popular since that's what most people prefer these days.
