    • @TheGuacamoleXplosion
      @TheGuacamoleXplosion 3 роки тому +4

      upper layer is tuned 2 semitones up from original sample; so, to get the lower layer precisely one octave below the upper, -10 from original sample would be correct ... equals -12 from the upper layer :-)

    Practically all kicks sound like dirty shit to me now. If i remove the dirty shit, there is nothing left to work in context. Conversely, if i get a kick to sound great in context, it sounds awful during an intro with just hats. You have to add subtle sounds to drown out the dirty shit hiss and distortion from people over compressing and overdriving kicks so they sound loud and fat.
    Better to create from scratch. At least they are clean and need no over produced and saturated crap they sell in packs these days.

  • @davidreyesflores5815
    @davidreyesflores5815 2 роки тому

    First you should never tune your kicks because they cause phase problems with the bass frequencies, they cancel each other and your start losing low end energy, second 12 semitones are one octave essentially not 9 not 10
    Lastly Knock decap plugin are the go to to shitty kicks make them sound way better than all this processing just saying 😅

    The way you describe "clicks" is confusing to me mate. When I think of clicking in an engineering sense I think of samples being out of phase and making that popping noise. What exactly are you referencing when you say "click" when talking about your kicks?

  • @SeshwaChickenKebab
    @SeshwaChickenKebab 3 роки тому +3

    Great tutorial, however a lot of this could be avoided (not entirely, this is great for sound design IMO) and skipped by selcting good samples from the beginning. Sampling an already mastered kick can get you 80-100% of the way there without any need for additional processing. Doing so gives you also more time to work on the rest of the track rather than just being constantly stuck with a problematic kick.

    First, thanks for a great explaination. Second, the way you show before and after is truly an advance. It's so much better than clicking a bypass or trying to click two bypass buttons in time with the music. Third, I can't argue with your results, but that's a hell of a lot of effort and processing. I really, truly think a lot of what you achieved with multiple compressors could have been achieved with a proper eq move and one compressor. But that's just me. As I said, I can't argue with your results. Also, a Pulteq night have gotten you the bottom boost and the clarity of the low-mid cut with one simple plugin. As for tuning the kick, yeah, it might be audible, but if your kick is short enough (and you noticed that the original was *too long*), there's really just no point in tuning it. As deadmou5 says, and I agree, if you need to tune your kick, you're really using an 808, and that's a different kettle of fish. Thanks again for the great video!

      There are lots of alternatives. There's the torque plugin. Most DAWs have a pitch and/frequency shifter. In some you can do it in the audio editor and then just duplicate that sample. There's pitchmonster. And etc. Sometimes, you can just cut out the transient (first few milliseconds) and replace the body with a sine wave. There's a million ways. Usually, you'll need to edit the sample because if you pitch-shift the entire sample, you destroy the transient. Then, you end up playing games with five to ten plugins to get the transient back. That's sorta what happened here. There are kick construction kits that have transients and bodies as separate, composable samples: you make your kick from the transient and body of your choice. (Bitwig comes with a bunch of these....)

    Hello Noize London, I'm listening on on of my least accurate speakers - laptop speakers, and within a few minutes of hearing you speak, that nagging feeling from the "room" sound in your voice, which overshadowed everthing you said, kinda irritated me. Why? I expected more from you. From whom much is given, much is expected. Suggest you sort out your microphone positioning, or use a lapel mic.
    The audio from the drum/music was ok. But really did not enjoy listening to you on this video.

      Hello Okay1, I'm reading your comment through my least accurate glasses - Specsavers, and within a few words of your comment, that nagging feeling of "this dude needs to stop trying to let everyone know he knows about room sounds" overshadowed everything you said, kinda irritated me. Why? I expected more from you. From whom much is written, much is expected. I suggest you sort out your unsolicited "constructive criticism" or watch another video.
      The spelling/grammar was ok. But really did not enjoy reading your comments on this video.

      Hey bud, during corona I had to move to a new country and I was very lucky to be given this space work in. Unfortunately it was not treated nor was I able to treat it so I apologise for the less than high fidelity audio. I thought delivering would be better than not at all so I carried on 🙏🏼

      @@NoizeLondon My dear British compatriot, absolutely understand your situation, was aware of it before I commented. My thoughts were "in spite of the bad room, with inadequate acoustic treatment, this is a challenge for Noize London, by which he can demonstrate some real audio engineering mojo". i.e get back to basics, and in a difficult situation, still achieve great results by choice of microphone, positioning and EQ. You are already pretty good at mixing. But I suspect that there are not that many people for whom mixing is a predominant hobby or profession. That market is dwindling, IMHO with most of the work going to a few well known mixing engineers, cos the big record companies, who bankroll/promote ALL of the money making hits, are not prepared to take risks, and they are the ones who pay decent money for mixing jobs.
      Therefore most of your audience will be people who make their own music or in collaboration with others, who also have to record vocals, in relatively poor acoustic surroundings, not at the same standard as top studios, and it may do a lot for your followers, if you could show them how you, in spite of limitations, can achieve a decent result, demonstrating both the not so good sound as in this video, and compare it with how much of an improvement is possible with the various audio engineering tricks of your trade.
      Sure with a perfect setup, it will always be easier to achieve top quality, but it would be nice for your "followers" to see how well you can improve your audio, when confronted with very similar - less than ideal - recording environments, similar to most of your followers. Should end up being a more connective video, than the usual plugin demo.
      I must add though, I am becoming a bit jaded, by the conversion of so many online/youtube influencers, who only release videos when there is a product to be demonstrated. Not saying that you are one of these. Just that the authenticity of many channels as genuine informers and educators is becoming more suspect by the day, with more of them becoming mere advertising middlemen, for products/manufacturers. My issue though is if money has changed hands, which is good for the influencer, how then can I trust their review, cos money taints and colours all of us.
      Look forward to your taking up my aforementioned challenge. Best wishes. Of course I enjoy watching your channel. Keep well and stay safe.
      Before I go, what's your opinion on the Kali's. Did you create the DAW mixed aspects of the audio demonstration (i.e the sections where all the audio was from the computer only) via monitoring on headphones(if so which ones) or via monitoring on the Kali's in your ntreated room?. I'm thinking of upgrading my speakers someday - we can always dream, and my initial ambition was a Neumann K&H 80 DSP, cos I cannot justify spending more.

      @@LogansLessons Its not about being negative, if only we can all receive the truth, including issues that need improvement, accept it well, as Noize London did, in his response to me. If I did not care about his channel, I would not have bothered to comment. I simply was letting someone who has previously set very high standards, in my humble opinion, that this one was not up to scratch. Feedback, honest feedback, not negativity, and I am sure we all do better if only people told us the truth.
      I make an assumption that this channel is about audio, after all, so an honest comment about audio quality, on an audio channel, should be well received. Nothing wrong with that.
