First time viewer. Finished reading The Pyramids before yesterday in a week. Gotta say, Mighty Mike is a catchy good nickname. I only started a intro week yesterday but continue to listen to videos from Eric to better comprehend the principles and guidelines.
I really love your podcasts Mike! I’ve listened to all of them. Keep up the good work. But... lately there is So much commercial for your supps in your podcast. Getting a little bit annoying if I may Say.
Im taking a modified lean bulk approach. It just sounds psychologically devastating as a natural to feel so big then cut down and lose so much muscle. I wanna see where I am right now.
So pretty much follow his 1% increase/decrease (surplus/deficit) per Month from his Pyramid books. It'd be cool to review this again to see if he's got better findings today.
Ok so what about a guy that goes on a bulk for a year and gains 16kg and trains like a madman on heavy duty exercises and eats pretty much clean but high kcals near the 6000 range . Lets say hes put on half of that as fat as per those studies and the other half is 8kg of lean muscle tissue . So his whole bodily system is now servicing a larger organism of 16kg ..more veins more capilliaries more blood etc etc Then he goes on a slow diet and comes down 0.4kg per week ..that would be 20 weeks of a slow diet to get 8kg off fat off. Do you think he can build muscle and get stronger on a slow diet of 0.4kg fat loss per week .....supposedly all the studies do . Then after hes lost the fat it would be easier to regain bodyweight with a higher proportion of muscle as his bodily systems were already at an increased bodyweight . This all seems great to me . Any guys i saw ever try to lean bulk looked like they never changed to me . You can always diet the fat off and retain the muscle . Its not difficult its ujst slow
Eric seems a little bitter about bodybuilding culture and the way it has affected his own body image? I personally don’t see why you would want to get striated glutes. I just want to be big and strong at like 12-14% body fat.
@@MikeMatthewsFitness but more practical advice would have been better, what to eat? what will keep you going? How long to bulk? Should you do mini cuts (like a week or 2) during bulking to avoid fat gain? Foods to eat etc... Going through studies about fat gain was like convincing the world 1 + 1 = 2 and going through every reason why that is correct... We know that, but want practical advice and application, not theory.
Do u think that my calorie dificit ok, ? 1700 calories i´m 157 cm 66kg in weight, workout 5-6 times a week, 1 time whit cardio/H.I.T., and 5session whit weightlifting ? . ,
Please let Eric finish his thought before you interrupt with random nuggets that derail the conversation (eg, when you bring up 4 compartment bodyfat measurement, let Eric finish his point)
Mike ...unfortunately if someone just tunes in ...would possibly not understand/learn anything from this ...the conversation is between literally two buddies with a lot of history between them and especially on topic .....more or less a catch up on the phone on something you had discussed between you ....
It requires some prior knowledge, since it's not as basic as Mike's usual video's. But for someone who is familiar with the terms this was filled with solid information. Actually made half a page of notes which will come in handy for my next bulking cycle.
@@MrAwesome__ I know that but I was just trying to be constructive ...unless you do a series on the topic for a random listener all you talk about is just Cameroonian.I also made a comment today on your IG, arguing that is practically impossible for anyone to be around 100-200 calories accuracy, unless one lives on protein shakes and makes measurement of fractions of grams. What I mean is 100 grams of chicken breast from the same package can have considerably different calories! To be very scientific, and that's when one for certain knows what their maintenance are. I for one after years still can't figure that out...
@@QeeQee1 yeah I understand your point. I just prefer these video's so I gave my point of view. Assuming you mean Mike's IG and not mine :) As for the 100 - 200 accuracy, it's true that it is not possible. But accuracy is not what you're after, it's precision. As long as you consistently measure you can still track the trend over a longer period of time. It's the same with weighing for fatloss, you can't accurately measure it with a scale, due to hydration-levels, sodium intake, glycogen stores etc. But consistently weighing yourself allows you to still see fairly precise trends. As for bulking I tend to measure everything I eat and adjust based on gained weight. Based on this video I'd weigh myself every day, take a 7 day average and aim for 0.19kg weight gain each week. Usually you can see trends over as little as 2-3 weeks. Edit: spelling & words
This is what podcasts are my dude. Long form conversions on subjects where there's plenty of opportunity for context and nuance. If you want summaries, watch the amazing content by creators like Jeff Nippard and Picture Fit.
I love Eric Helms but as a guy working with communication: these fitness expert guys need to learn how to cut the talking WAY down and get to the point. There's a balance between being the "get jacked with these 5 easy steps"-guy and the "let me talk about metastudies for 35 minutes before getting to the point"-guy. Please try to be concrete. Studies and nuances are important and I do appreciate the effort to be transparent about where the information is coming from because god know the lifting community is in need of real authorities, but that can be done without laying out every single detail of every study referenced. There's a different time and a different audience for that. Scientific research should be presented with the audience in mind and most people are on here to get useful advice, not to get the whole backstory about the study and the historical perspective on former beliefs in the community etc. I pressed the timestamp for how big of a surplus is needed and I never actually got an answer, just talking about studies. I feel like there is a dick measuring contest within the lifting community in terms of who is most scientific based and it's getting in the way of actually giving people concrete advice which is all we want

Anyone has the studies which Eric is talking about?
Listening to this to get info on lean bulking…. Absolutely nothing but studies about fat gain 😳🙄
That's because a large part of lean bulking is avoiding getting too fat too fast.

Holy shit, the dudes in the study that were eating more were eating almost 6000 calories a day! No wonder they got fat.

Is it Hugh Jackman or is it "huge jacked man"? hmmm
