  • Owning and riding a Yamaha XT500 is a dream of any classic motorlover around the world. Kickstarting the machine however can be a nightmare. Being hot or could they are notorious for faulty starting, when set up or kicking incorrectly.
    Heres the procedure for a hot and cold engine to always start your XT500 without problems.

    You also probably don't know about the resistor in the spark plug boot that really causes a weak spark & causes a lot of the hot start issues. Check it out. Real easy to unscrew the brass retainer in the cap. Change it out for a 16 penny nail cut to size & deburred/sanded smooth. Check your spark before & after replacing that resistor. I've got a 78 & 79. 78 bought new in 78, 79 around 95. Raced a 77 in 78 to 85. Been running that nail since 78.

    When kick: leave kick crank in lowest position (approximately 1,5 second) till running. There is "anti-kick-back-mechanism"
    Most people get feared.
    I'm just a mechanical dumbo😊

      Thanks Klaus for your addition. That is what someone taught me as well. That mechanism is known to break off tough.

      It's about 3 parts: rachet wheel, torsion spring and kick gear sprocket. Often the rachet wheel is broken. When find little broken pieces on bottom of right side cover, it can easily replaced. Prevent bruised right ankle.😂

      "Anti-kick-back"- mechanism is Japanese genius! Like a normal rachet. But not horizontal. Works axial

      Besser den Kicker beim starten immer kurz unten lassen. Dann langsam mit Fuß nach oben nehmen.
      So währe es ganz richtig!👍

    About hot start: when push white button on carb: don't touch throttle-grip. It's about 1,5mm. Very sensitive

    You make the standard mistake when starting the TT/XT 500 - any year (76-81). You are kicking it like a two stroke! You stab the kicker down & lift up immediately. These engines are designed with a ratchet release mechanism built into the kick assembly. Kick it down & lock the lever against the foot peg, it CANNOT kick back. Let it up when it's running or stops spinning. Look in the service manual/parts pictorial, if you even own one & you will see the ratchet mechanism. This is important to follow to prevent injury. Pgs 15, 16 & 17 in the original 78 owners manual is very descriptive.

    you could fit an electrical starter made by Nuts and bolts in france : the "xstart" starter kit so simple !

    Timing and a new capacitor is a big issue. I prefer "dynamic method" with Strobo-timing-light

    The thilthiest kickback I ever got was from that dinousour . Felt like broken ankle . Probably was .

    If it doesn't start right away or if you accidentally goosed the throttle. let the bike sit for a while before trying again.
