Just got accepted into a S.P. program. I wanted to say thank you for the content you post. Super informative videos and you always come with a cheerful/humorous vibe. Keep up the great work!
Serena L there are so many types of assessments and rules!! We made tip sheets last year for the big ones and keep sticky notes for special notes and exceptions 😂 it’s impossible to memorize it all
BTW love all your videos, there really isn't much out there to help understand school psychology, and reading Dr. Charles book that you recommended these videos have helped place so many things into perspective
Is being relatable as important as being professional? As a Drill Sergeant, I earned more respect from my Soldiers by maintaining my professional appearance. I noticed a significant change in cycles that I was more relatable and relaxed and it wasn’t for the good. More respect was earned when maintaining the professional persona and the younger population reached out more often and were more vulnerable. I think some of the science has been a bit flawed lately and I’d like to study this more. Are we causing more harm by healthy minds taking professional advice from mentally challenged individuals? There’s a trend of adhering to the demands of a community that has incredibly high suicide rates instead of looking into how to actually help these people. It sounds virtuous on social media or from the outside looking in, but suicide is on the rise and has been. There’s so many questions that come to mind. I hope to be apart of the community of real change and to really define the issues based in science not emotionally charged decisions. Love and concern is the motivation, but not always the voice of reason. People need guidelines.
Hey!! This is the one I have now: www.amazon.com/gp/product/1099561132/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It's a little flimsy but it has all the slots that I need for the week and it's super affordable compared to the nicer planners. Here's a nicer one that I've had before: passionplanner.com/2020-dated-elite-black/
Hey Tiffany, I just discovered your channel today, but I am finding it so insanely helpful. I'm currently in the process of applying to a particular Ph.D. program where I'm currently at in undergrad, but have been considering looking at George Mason for the next following year, depending on if I get into the program. Would love to connect with you and hear more about your future projects.
Good luck on getting into the Ph.D. program! Let me know if you have any questions about mason and the SP program :D although it's a master's/specialist degree, I think the training prepares students really well with a lot of hands on practice and real clients. Feel free to dm me on instagram!
Hey Tiffany, your channel is so helpful! I am planning to pursue my Masters in School Psychology next year. I am looking for an affordable place to live while I work full-time and study. You mentioned sharing a home with classmates. That's a game changer! Would you be able to describe the steps you took to do that? Thanks so much😊
Hey! I recommend reaching out to your classmates (if you have access to their email) or asking your professor if they know anyone else who is looking to move closer to campus. I've also had some luck joining campus facebook or reddit groups to look for people who want roommates. Hope this helps!
Hi Tiffany, This is a super random comment but I am currently writing a paper on intelligence testing and giftedness and was wondering if you have any insights or perhaps papers you have read in your program so far that cover culture fair testing when assessing children for giftedness. I am not really familiar with the topic and would love to learn more! I want to learn more about the underrepresentation of students from linguistically and culturally diverse background identified as gifted. Thanks :)
Hi Nancy! This is a great question! In my program, we've talked about assessments that are more fair (obviously not perfect) for English language learners or ID students but not about the gifted population. This article talks about why it could be difficult to identify giftedness in ELL populations journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.4219/jeg-2009-858 but only seems to mention one academic and cognitive assessment. This also seems to be a good read on IQ testing with ELL students www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/02783193.2007.11869221?needAccess=true My only worry would be the students' ability to learn and grasp higher level content if they are still learning English. All subjects will require a certain level of cognitive academic language proficiency which I think should be developed to a certain degree before a student joins a GT program. Hope this helps!
Hey Tiffany, I know you mentioned you worked in ABA before you went to grad school. I was offered a job in it too, and I’m excited! I’m worried at the same time though, because I know there is some controversy surrounding ABA practices....is this something you’ve had to confront/defend your experience working in it? Has it affected your experience getting jobs or getting into grad school (for school psych)?
YES! While no one doubts that it is good experience, I had to confront some of my supervisors on the ethics of my job and behavior plans. I think ABA is very effective, especially for younger children, but we have to keep in mind that the modification should be for the good of the child and family. Schools actually prefer people who have a background in behavior because it gives them another resource for students with severe behaviors in schools.
how has your personal life (with friends, where you live, relationships with family, romance hehe) changed since you went to grad school and pursued being a school psych? can you do a video on that :) If its too personal I totally get it.
the planner in the video is from amazon. I think I paid less than $15 for it, and while it wasn't as aesthetically laid out and decorated, it provided everything i needed for organization :D i've also enjoyed using passion planner
Hey! I tried to join a research lab but I struggled to find one that was a good fit with my interests and schedule. I think it's great experience that you can add to your resume and talk about in class. Ph.D programs typically look for research experience when looking through candidates since programs are research heavy. I took a few years after undergrad to work in ABA/private school and figure out what I wanted to do. I was also able to save money for grad school. Hope this helps!
I am still waiting to hear back from my School Psychology programs am I'm super nervous about the interview process. Are there any suggestions for Ed.S interviews? Thanks!
be yourself :) I think it's always a good idea to link your answers with any personal experiences you have because it's easier to talk about, making you feel and seem more comfortable. Make sure you know what drew you to the field and why you want to pursue it. Good luck!!
Amber Viola my professors give us one pass a semester to miss class for whatever reason! If you have a valid reason for additional absences, they’re usually very reasonable 👌🏻 I think it depends on your personality and judgment if you’re sick. Good luck!!
yes, mine is NASP approved. I think it's definitely worth finding programs that are NASP accredited because it'll cover all licensing and credentialing grounds!
Hey, so I am in my last year of undergraduate school and am looking into NJCU for a professional diploma in school psychology, I know the answer but just want a confirmation a professional diploma is the program I would need to apply for to be specialized in school psychology?
i would just double check that the program is NASP approved. the NASP website has a list of programs that are accredited- it allows you to be certified so you can practice in most states
i like school psych because decisions are very data driven (special ed. eligibility, behavior plans, etc.)! we are also qualified to give counseling and group therapy in the schools so i think it's a good blend

I’m a trainee educational psychologist in Ireland - delighted to have found your channel. Great tips.. can relate!! 🙌😅

wow i'm so glad you were able to read his book!! it's an easy read and gives good perspective on the field and education in general
Which book??
it's on his website and amazon! Here's a link :) charlesbarrett.org/store
Thank you Tiffany! This is helpful. Have been super stressed. This helps a lot
Thanks so much for watching! Grad school is definitely stressful but it's worth it :-)
I love this! Thank you for the tips !
