  • Professor Averil Mansfield CBE is a retired Vascular Surgeon and the first
    British woman to be appointed Professor of Surgery. Graduating from University of Liverpool in 1960 after lecturing at the same university, and appointed Consultant Vascular surgeon, she later moved to London
    1980, working at St Mary‘s, Great Ormond Street and Imperial , where she served as an Honorary Senior Lecturer. Not only has she made history with her aforementioned professorship, she continued to pave the way for female surgeons as she was a founding chairwoman for the RCS Women in Surgical Training committee, and later on founding Women in Surgery, a Royal College of Surgeons initiative, to encourage more women to enter the field. She has since been appointed Commander of the British Empire in 1999, for her services to surgery and women in medicine, voted one of the ‘100 Women Who Have Changed the World’ by the Independent on Sunday, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the NHS Heroes Awards in 2018. @thetraumasurg @bristolwins @asitofficial @stellavig
