In Maine, a state in the NE of the US, I was told that it is a derivative of making fishing nets to lovely pieces of lace like the one you found. I'm sure it can be found in many places of the world. One of my favorites of your purchases is the lovely painting of the flowers.

The tapestry would look perfect in a frame and maybe you could put all the thread balls in a nice basket which would look pretty. I think that house where you went was gorgeous, with some lovely items.
