- Folks - we did this last year, and we're doing it again this year - the Ultimate Peavey Shoot-Out, except this time we were able to round up gunslinger, Johnny DeMarco!
Sorry about the clipping ... we did the best we can do. Those amps were FKING loud!!!, so even w/ attenuation on the cam - it clipped. But, it's still a rocking video, so ENJOY!!!

I want them all. Peavey Life
I miss Peavey, well Peavey being a major player, they were a company you could really be proud of as an American amp maker that not only creates iconic amps, but wasn't afraid to innovate and, on top of that, made amps the average player could actually afford. I met a few of their engineers at the NAMM show years back, some of the coolest guys ever. Now we've really just got Mesa Boogie, as far as big US amp makers, and man they love to stick it to you with insane prices, not to mention they make difficult AF to dial-in amps that use underrated/obsolete components that are prone to fail.
Peavey Best Amps on The Market . I Own a JSX 212 , Best combo I every Had.
I have to say, Peavey makes some badass amps. I own a 3120 and that thing can SCREAM!
The Butcher sounds like a punk rock machine!
the XXX was unbelievable
Ah shit, I think I'm going to have to check out the Triple X 2. The original Triple X was a monster in its own right.
nice fall protection .
killer chops Johnny, never doubted it but i'll say it again - YOU THE MAN!!! and yeah that XXX is sick!!
@kiznert yep. but ships with JJEl34's and sounds killer.
@msd1835 The new XXX IS the JSX.
The XXX II sounds fucking beast
Man Peavey Amps Kick Major fucking Ass!
The Demarco Brothers... The best duo on teh interwebs..
My opinions:
Butcher: Me gusta
3120: Good all-around amp.
XXXMk2: Very muddy rhythm's, awesome leads. Would probably have an awesome rhythm sound if it had an OD to tighten it up.
6534+: Somewhat muddy, but really sounded the best out of them, in my opinion. Wish I had one.
Got 6 peavey heads back to original butcher.
oh man
Its great that makes thier stuff here in the USA. I wish more companies would do this. I'd like to support Peavey...but all thier heads are 100+ watts! How many people play arenas and need 100watts? Its ridiculous. Half power switch is a tone killer switch. If they'd come down to reality and build a 25 or 50 watt high gain head with EL34 tubes, I'd be first in line!
Peavey Odyssey guitars were way overlooked... parts and build quality are great for really low price.
Tone King we need a vid on the new YJM100 asap , please!!!!!
Thes amps do sound really god. The xxx sounds like an Engl and the 6505 does sound very similar to the 5150 iii from what i can tell. I had one of those till recently.
@firepigg3
Just take out the outer 2 power tubes in the 6534+ and you have what you are looking for.
The only peavey products made in the USA are the ones demo'd here, and they say it right on the front.
Your "budget" valveking and vypyr are made in china. Also the prices on these amps are REALLY competitive compared to other high gain amps.
And Ive taken Peavey on the road. Theyve handled every drop, kick over, spill, fall and you name it. I cannot say te same for my marshall. Maybe a marshall from the 70/80s but not now (just my opinion) all those old school marshall guys are all playing amps from different companys like Friedman.
@dbenc they most likely do on the lower end models such as the vypers ....he only said the heads they were using there were made in usa..maybe im wrong tho
XXX and the 6534 sounded bad to the bone
@dbenc yeah they totally dont, except for their lower end models
Butcher sounded great!!!!
these amps have no shit over the old killers ! 80's Peavey Butcher, Peavey ultra 60/120, old Peavey 5150, peavey Triumph, Peavey Prowler, Peavey Bravo, VTM .. these were the shit !
the 6505+ is the 5150 with a different look...
Mark Emhoff that's what i read, but i tested both amps, an old 5150 and the new 6505, and both had a different sound ! (both tested on V30 by celestion).. i guess if the amps are still the same, the tubes were different !
arrackattack Even two of the same exact model, with the same (brand and type) tubes, same settings, will always have some slight differences to the discerning ear. Just the fact that you're using vacuum glass, and every cap, resistor, every part has some variation in specs. I mean, if the old 5150 and the new 6505 sounded drastically different, there would have to be something going on, but I've heard raw guitaar tracks re-amped through both 6505s AND a 5150, and I heard a bigger difference between the 6505 and the 6505+ than between the + and the 5150....but even that difference could be eq'ed out with a fraction of degree turn on the presence knob, mostly...
@deathcore1239 i know right lol, still great amp for what its purpose is regardless
The 6505: I preferred the 6534. =P
It's really nice to see a comparison of the Peavey amp heads. It gives a good feel for how each one is best used.
kick ass demo tone king, really appreciate it man!
If Dave Mustaine ever heard the XXX, he'd become a Peavey endorser!
They're re-introducing the Triple XXX? I still have the original.
why doesnt tone king make a tv show? i mean, id watch it all the time. it would deffinitly be my favorite show
that might have billy ray at 8:10 but the question who is the chick with the black hair with him, now that he is divorced. Great amps and another great demo.
The guy with the ponytail reminds me of the record exec on the movie Airheads lol. Fucking suit.
Yeah, Johnny + Peavey! My favourite player togerther with my favourite brand.
Johnny DiMarco is a great demonstrator.. and sweet player..
That new XXX looks fantastic. $1400 is a little steep though >_>
I love Johnny!
The New XXX IS the EXACT same thing as the JSX.....just different faceplate.
Gotta say that the 6534+ sounds better than the 6505+.
love the butcher!, you know, the black sheep of the peavey family :P......classic!
why doesn't tone king make a tv show? i mean, id watch it all the time. it would definitely be my favorite show! :)
SO AWESOME :)
thumbs up to peavey ,johnny, and you ttk peace bro !!!! and to peavey thanks for keeping the work in the u.s.a
I have a 6505+ and it is brutal. Low end and balls for days. I never turn the gain above 6 either. I am playing through a recto 4x12 so that helps. I can't vouch for these other amps but Peavey makes great stuff. You can't go wrong with any of these amps.
Peavey: Made in Meridian Mississippi!
I can definitely tell how super loud those amps are in the vids! Rock on!
a 6505 with gain on 10 is crazy...i play my 5150 II with gain on 5.25, res. on 6,and my tone is super !
The older xxx sounded MUCH better
@codybell87 because it sounds a little shitty. at least, it does with detuning and 7 strings
Fred's taking time off from training "Daniel Son" to push the latest from Peavey. Awesome!
Peavey Amps give me wood! \m/ \m/
i hope the 6534 dosent sound like a muddy mess like the 6505, cant exactly tell the tone in the vid
Im a proud peavey owner, next on my list is the Peavey triple X
@codybell87 cause its a budget amp and doesn't even compare to there higher end models.
Man, id do anything to play all those amps one after the other. Great work TTK! \m/_
Same. Id lick the devil's butthole to own them
Triple X II.... Thats a JSX.
VTM
Why didn't the window breakk it would be better, isnt it??
lol dan donegan walkin by at 8:10
the original 5150 is like a fat lady standing on your rib cage
hmmm Johnny DeMarco with no boss products whats the world comin to
why not the valveking? :(
why would they give the one with the lowest amount of gain the most metal name (the butcher)?
active electronics on that gtr...
which peavey should i get for brutal death metal tone?
In my opinion for metal id have to give it to the triple x 2 (jsx) the thing is so versatile, 3 channels and a noisgate. Though the 6505 and 6534 sounds a bit tighter i would have to give it to the triple x 2
I totally thought he was going to play "Holy Wars" by Megadeth at 4:50.
I like peavey, my son uses a valveking head through a 4x12 with v30s and it does sound brutal altho wont be in the same league as a 6505 but only cost £220 for the head an cab used.... I dont think i could buy the knobs of a 6505 for that ;0)
@1withguitar true. but i want a good valveking and windsor demo. :( gotta say though. The 6534+ is AHMAZING.
Is the XXX ii just a JSX pretty much?
Wow!!!
Apart from the Butcher not my thing, the others sounded really, really good. Thanks TK and Johnny DeMarco. I bet it's even better in person. I got to get me one of those but which one?!?!?
Those new butcher's sound terrible. An original 80s model will blow yer hair back. Does mine atleast
Way to emphasis they are made in the USA... they may as well just say "Fuck you Bugera."
Excellent shoot-out TTK! I particularly loved the XXX, I'll have to research the clean channel, but sounded killer!
You're doing a good job at NAMM TTK, any plans to video the BC Rich booth? I know youre a fan?
@18266609 good i am not the only one who sees the new xxx is just a repackaged jsx, it's not a bad thing they did the same thing when they lost Eddie Van halen as an endorsee
HA!!! Just noticed at the 8:10 mark... Dan Donegan from Disturbed walked up... Then walked away....
The triple xxx?
Thats XXXXXXXXX right?
Shit! all of them are great!!
I think Peavey makes great amps. The 3120 sounds much better than what the video revealed. I don't think it was eq'ed right for that particular guitar. I had a 6505 and for metal they are terrific. I have a 3120 now and it is a jack of all trades. And it can do metal. If you need a bit more hair just put a tube screamer in front and your there. I just love the sound of EL34 tubes. The 6534+ sounds killer. Thanks for the vid.
WOW! I'm in GAIN heaven. LOL I could feel the breeze from my computer speakers. Gain and versatility wise how do all but the Butcher compare to the Mesa Dual Rec? Also made in the USA :-)
@skovol007 That's a good idea!
TTK please :)
Im not quite sure why he says the3120 is a Rock-n-Roll amp. They have a different Idea of what Rock-n-Roll is I guess. From what I heard Its Slam 80s metal To chug if you want it .Defently a sherder amp for shure, and its all good!I guess it depends on what type of setup you have to get the Rocken Roll I don't Know !
1:50 Butcher
3:17 3120
4:50 XXX II
6:53 6534+
8:24 6505+
I actually have a 3120....and these settings shown are REDICULOUS!! I run a Maxon OD thru it and I have the gain on 9:30-10:00 and I get PLENTY of gain. So don't judge the 3120 by this vid.
The older XXXs & Ultra's are the best heads by peavey. 5150 comes in 3rd
Yea my vk is indeed made in china as are all the other vk's but its tweaked and played to within an inch of its life in the UK ;0)
Joking aside, it is a good amp and is fine to a point, but ive just bought a 6505 which is immense ;0)
@creation23 Seems that way doesn't it? I was wondering the same.
@gillenh2o yeah its a great amp...i own the jsx and been happy ever since i bought it...personaly imo the jsx looks better than the new XXX 2 design but yeah joe aint with peavey anymore so i guess a cosmetic change was needed...All in all the jsx to begin with is just a tuned up XXX with more features so it makes sense
6:15 6534+
@bleedingfly do more covers like your Tornado of Souls cover, become a big hit on youtube and youll be there next year \m/_
(lol, ust sayin cause i want to see more covers XD)
I too am not a fan of the 6505+. I've only played the 1x12 combo 50 watt.
There is a great amount of gain on the amp, but it's mud city if you run it at full gain.
Set full the gain is too much and articulation is not good. Roll it back and there is still plenty of gain, but again, the tone never really cleans up. If you're a metal player that likes to hear the root note and maybe a bit of the 3rd, then the 6505+ may work for you. Clean, forget it. Yeah, it's got a rhythm channel, but nothing clean about it.
The best high gain Peavey imo is the JSX, which is not longer made. Peavey dropped it and kept most of it as the XXX, but I don't know if the clean channel is as clean as the JSX.
mid-range on 10 equals bad beer head-ache, get real people.
I think it's time now to upgrade your recording kit for something with a better quality
cough Mesa cough :)
ibeg to differ. i feel ultimate metal amp may just be a tri rec now ;)
I like how the peavey guy makes that whole little shiz nit about if you don't use the 6505 and you play metal you have a problem. Like are you serious? There are TONS of other amps and pedals that sound or is better than the peavey's.
thats the most random playing i have ever seen....
"Lets show off the capabilities of these kick ass amps... by using a shit mic and low rent travel gear"
6505 has not impressed me at the several stores I've played it at. Weak low end, you can hear that vs the XXX in the video and the low end is weak!
fake butcher
