Resurfacing a Welding Table with a Grinder

- In this episode we take a short break from the band saw rebuild and we work on resurfacing a welding table with a grinder. I used 80 grit sanding flap disks for metal. I was quite pleased with my results. Now mind you I was not going for a mirror finish. I just wanted to knock the heavy rust off and clean up the surface for some upcoming mig welding and stick welding.
Thanks for watching.

I did as the vid showed to my table but before I started I hit it with Ospho .. Made life mush easier with out all the iron dust everywhere
That is a beauty! Love the score on HW...Well done Will....
Thank you George. I cant wait to put it to use!

I’d use a wire wheel or a polycarbide wheel for the rust. And a flap disc for any really stuck spatter. Awesome table I’d love to have one like it
It is a nice thick table with heavy duty casters. I wanted to do a swirl design in the surface and thought a wire wheel might do the trick. Thanks for watching!

Nice table Will
Thanks Tim. I'm excited to use it.

Treat top with Apple cider vinegar if table will be inside
At my work we grind our benches once or twice a week even daily depending on the project we beat on our benches with our welders and plasma torches
Thats how it should be done.
Thanks for watching!

You caught me [volume wise] with the new disc. I dropped the volume the first couple of times only to hear music, so I stopped turning the stereo down. Whoops. Looks good though!
Sorry about that. Trying to do better with the volume levels.

@@Debtfreehomesteaders No worries
Don't use a flap disc for rust removal. What you are looking for is an abrasive woven disc specific for rust and paint removal which does not remove any metal
Excellent suggestion. Thank you.

Better late than never but shouldve covered the lower half in plastic and poured some 3:1 ratio muriatic acid on the top to just eat the rust off and saved tou the hassle of grinding so much. Then used a polycarbide wheel to remove the heavier stuff the acid didnt get. Polycarbide doesnt remove alot of material from the table mostly the rusted stuff itd left a nice clean finish look to the table top.
Thats a great idea. I'll have to try it!
Thanks for the helpful tip.
-Will
Then how do you get the Muriatic Acid off the table?
@@desijrichert water. Then dry it with a weed burner
Mr. Dewdwithaface says he likes wire wheels.
I'll have to try the wire wheel. Thanks for watching!

Hahahahaha. You have one flap disc on hand? 🤦♂️
Now that I know how useful they are, I have many. Lol thanks for watching!

he went to the store and bought 1. My store is 9 minutes from my house. And I still buy at least 4 when I go. Love the video. I have a situation where I need to go wire wheel before I do Flap Disks. But
I will be doing what he did.
You just ruined your table for any hope of laying out anything for welding. Never use a flap disc for resurfacing. Use a diamond, metal grinding cup.
Uh-oh shame on me thanks for the tip!
-Will
I did the same but on a rusted $69.00 Harbor Freight table I found on FB Marketplace for $30. I still wish I had done my research first. Did I really ruin it or did I just ruin in for doing precision welds?
