The only mistake I think they made with Phoenix was allowing Byrne to bring her back to life. That was the real return that made death meaningless in comics. Not the death of Superman. Her death was profound and added stakes, but ever since then those stakes have been removed from comics.

I agree. Bringing Jean Grey back from the dead just to have all the original X Men back together because “the fans demanded it” for the first X Factor comic showed that bowing down to fan pressure is never a good thing.

I remember well Jim Shooters Marvel period in the late 70's to 80's buying's FF, Thor, X-men, Avengers, Daredevil, even DC's Teen Titans and Crisis, comics told stories about characters that made visiting the LCS a twice a week must do, for me that excitement is gone, but I live in hope of a renaissance.

I agree wholeheartedly. I was delighted that issue 1 was reprinted three times in between 2005 and 2007. Anyone intrigued by the scene Jim is discussing at 58:40 should revisit Star Brand #4 ("The Fight"). Kenneth Connell does indeed call the Pittsburgh office of public affairs recruiting office and next Wright-Patton air force base space systems division. There's even a thought bubble where Kenneth thinks "He's laughing at me."

Great interview. Went to a Creation Comic Book/Sci-Fi Convention in downtown Los Angeles back around 1983 or so and Byrne and Shooter were the guests. At that time those two were comic book royalty. Shooter sat at the Byrne table most of the time while Byrne did sketch commissions and they both signed books together. Back then, they'd sign as many books as you gave them and Shooter wrote in my X-Men 137 "and she shall stay dead". lol

Marvel under Shooter was a golden era for me, so many very good titles were raised to the level of exemplary.
I remember how excited I was when Kirby returned to Marvel and how his stories started with a bang but became, shall we say, confusing at times, and often without clear subplots connecting main stories from one issue to the next. Still, it's great to hear Jim's respect for Kirby (and the other greats he mentioned), especially with the framed drawing of Cap behind him.
In my imagination that Dazzler movie is real, it was filmed, it starred all the artists mentioned and remains a high point in musicals. And John Derek did not direct it, Nancy Walker of "Can't Stop The Music" fame did.
Jim comes across as a great raconteur and a really decent guy, I'd love to hear more from him.
Dazzler was strong enough to warrant a graphic novel from Marvel.

So I have to thank you for this interview with Jim Shooter & for showing Dazzler some love. Alongside Wonder Woman, Dazzler was the first series I collected & the first wave of the pandemic set me off wanting to fill any gaps of the run. She has been one of my favourite Marvel characters (alongside a slew of the late 70s lady-heroes like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel & Spider-Woman). To get a glimpse behind the curtain of her production & further intel on the lost movie (which was covered in the letter columns of the OG run) this was bliss. Thank you Richard for highlighting her number one! Some of the Dazzler covers are just breathtaking & that number one really stands out!! Also as an aside, I believe Alison Blaire’s debut in UnCanny X-Men #130 is probably more highly valued with a CGC 9.8 being currently valued at $1245-$2195 as it’s also part of the Dark Phoenix story arc. 🪩🛼🛼💗

According to Mike's Amazing World of Comics, Superboy Spectacular #1 went on sale December 6th, 1979. There's a note mentioning "1st Direct Sales only DC comic. Also distributed through school systems." This issue was 64 pages long with a $1.00 cover price and included 7 stories.
However, only the last 8 pages titled "The Puzzle of the Disappearing Pitcher" and Ross Andru's cover were original material. The rest reprinted silver age content from 1958-1961. Afterwards, Dazzler #1 ("So Bright This Star") was released on December 2nd, 1980. It includes 23 new interior pages with a 50 cent cover price.

Reading his upbringing and the fact that he was already having to work at the age of 14 to bring money into the family home, I’ve got a lot of respect for Jim Shooter, whose often looked on as a bit of a tyrant in his 10 years as editor in chief at Marvel. He just had an incredible work ethic that pushed the writers/artists to huge heights in the 80s. When he left, the prima donna artists who bloated the superheroes into either bodybuilding freaks or catwalk models in the 90s took over.
    No thanks.

So David Micheline came up with a story that would make the black costume unusable to Spidey going forward. Along came Venom in McFarlanes 3rd issue and he freaks out MJ and goes back to the red and blue. Todd has sold many pieces but the final panel of 300 is one he says he will never sell because it’s the first time he drew the red and blue.

An amazing interview, guys! Jim Shooter, to me, is second tallest giant in the comics industry of creators from any era, next to Jack Kirby (although, The King was short;-)) I have been and always will be a comics fan. When I was about 15 or 16, I sent in some terrible drawings to Marvel Comics and some time later, I get a beautiful rejection letter but encouraging to be sure from none other than BIG Jim Shooter telling me to keep it at but not there yet...I kept that letter and when I enlisted in the U.S. Army, my mom put all of my drawings and such papers in a large brown envelop which I did not see for the longest time...long story short, it was not summer of 2009, a few years after I had retired from the Army, when my mom gave me that brown envelope containing drawings from my high school days and as I went through all the contents of the envelope, there it was! Jim Shooter's envelope containing his letter address to me on the Spider-Man letterhead and Jim's signature. What a nostalgic moment for me. Fast forward about 5 years and much of my art from high school on, which I had stored in several boxes, were destroyed...including Jim Shooter's letter. I wish I had digitized it but never did. True story. Now, is time to realize my comics fan dream of creating comics and soon I will as I prepare my AGL COMICS debut on Kickstarter, soon... AGL

At 55:10, Jim wonders whether John Romita, Jr. was working on Iron Man or X-Men when he expressed interest in drawing Star Brand. I can confirm Uncanny X-Men #210 ("The Morning After") pencilled by Romita, Jr. went on sale July 8th, 1986 one week before Star Brand #1. Uncanny X-Men #211 ("Massacre") was next released on August 5th ending John's run until he returned for #287 ("Bishop to King's Five") six years later.
In November 2011, The Marvel Art of John Romita Jr. hardcover was published and one interview inside suggests he resented Jim because he couldn't return to Uncanny X-Men after leaving Star Brand. I do want to make it clear Jim's name isn't mentioned anywhere in that volume. I'm aware they're friendly and respectful to each other nowadays. Nevertheless, it seems John was convinced for a long time that Jim was at fault for his inability to replace Jackson Guice, Marc Silvestri, and/or Bret Blevins.
