chicago most likely put that sound as a siren to scare the storm away since chicago is the second most populous city in USA behind New York City, they were like "let's scare the tornado away with this sound as a siren so No one dies because on the population we are doing well"
As someone from the Chicago metro, I will say most of us aren't really scared by tornado sirens or warnings, especially in the suburbs. For us, these things are so common that we just get somewhat annoyed and head to the basement lol (or walk outside to look for it). It happened just last night and will probably happen a good 25-50 more times before September. Illinois has the 5th highest amount of tornados out of any state in the US so this is very normal, everyday life for us. We get more tornados on average per year than many of the states that are stereotypically a part of tornado alley (though a lot of places do lump Illinois in with tornado alley)
I don't have a basement and there's nothing magically safe about jumping into a tub if it sucked you up how on earth do you think you're going to survive.
The funny thing is, I live close to Chicago (Not directly IN Chicago) and after clicking off this, the alarms start sounding, since in Illinois (I don't know if anyone else has this in their country/state) they test the alarms at 10 o'clock in the morning on the first Tuesday of the month. It so happened to be 10 o'clock when I clicked off the video. What a coincidence!
Sirens Heard: Federal Signal DSA - Alternate Wail at Waveland Field House & Carillon’s Tower. Federal Signal Modulator 6024 - Custom Fast Wail (2001-SRN Fast Wail Tone) at Wrigley Field.
i am from mexico so I didn t see never a tornado in my life but when i was in chicago in that exact moment, i remember my grandma scream " todos al sotano ! " and the sirens started to make that sound , thanks god my family was ok but it was really creeppy
A LOT of people to this day STILL think that this is a 2001 in fast wail and a Modulator in Alternate Wail. In fact, this is the Wrigley Field Modulator 6024 on MC Controls Using a Custom Fast Wail Tone, along with a DSA on Lake Shore Drive using Alternate Wail.
@@giarni_ I’m probably wrong but if you look above the building in the middle of the video you can see a weird funnel kind of shape which could be a tornado forming.
Imagine a person visiting Chicago for the first time ever and didn't know about the siren and a tornado happened EDIT:OH MY GOD THIS BLEW UP HARDER THEN A TOILET AFTER TACO BELL
Here in Illinois if we hear stuff like this we're usually not scared by it at all were just mildly annoyed lmao. Last night we had warnings and the sirens went off in the nearby suburbs and instead of panicking, everyone was like "ugh seriously again??" Because it's so common here
Seems the DSA siren inside the clock tower (the green little building on the right at 0:17) is the one doing the “alternate wail” tone. The MOD6024 at Wrigley Field (the bright lights at 0:32) did the normal wailing tone that night as seen in other videos and extremely faintly heard here (although the Alternate Wail of the clock tower DSA and the fast wail of the Ravenswood 2001 [which is further away but has a larger range] drown it out but it’s there as heard in other videos from that night taken at the field). So it seems that only SOME of the Modulators/DSAs used to be programmed to do alternate wail (at least the DSA in the clock tower and at least 2 Modulators downtown) and the rest of the Mods/DSAs were programmed normally to do regular wail. Makes me wonder if it ACTUALLY WAS a programming error since only some Mods/DSAs used to do it while others never did…plus nowadays they all (the 2001s that once did fast wail included) do the normal wailing tone for tornado warnings.
*interview with siren head* interviewer: so, what made you make this sound in Chicago? siren head: i just wanted to give people a break from me and what I’ve done and other stuff interviewer: I thought you were killing other people siren head: *did you even hear me?* run.

Sometimes tornado sirens can be programmed to give the up and down effect this is usually reserved for a tornado emergency situation where a killer tornado is on the ground entering the warned area this really alerts people in immediate danger that this is a special situation and not a regular warning however in this case the system malfunctioned and should have sounded the even tone siren.
Not trying to be offensive but do you have a source for this because there are other videos of Chicago at different day times that played the exact same siren sounds.
@@niro2766 I will explain how all this evolved later this afternoon, there is no official orders on how a siren should operate but some sirens have the ability to give a straight tone or warbling tone to let proper authorities know how urgent a situation is it is unofficial and dates back to the 1960s.I will get back to you...
In the 1960s in unincorporated cook county volunteer fire depts. had sirens to call in personel they used an up and down wailing siren because this type brought the most attention in a serious situation. as civil defense and towns started to add weather or tornado sirens they at first and still do use a long blast they rotate on a pole for maximum effect. a spotted or radar indicated tornadic rotation promts a siren to get turned on. as a throwback to earlier times some older spotters to really get the public to heed the warning by using the wailing mode especially on pds tornado warnings. Yes i know the system in chicago somehow was even in test mode or on other warnings not taken out of up and down mode. Perhaps the sirens malfunctioned and were eventually fixed but as i know here in chicago it takes a long time to get anything done. but there is no policy other than unoffically using the system to really pay attention to a dangerous situation. it was scary for a reason.,like what the hell is going on . it did its job as all the different times and places were noted by us subscribers If the sky is black with fast moving clouds and you hear that same sound take cover immeadiatly.
