I think the original qctor was better in saying "if you have come to consume the garden, you will be, removed, at once." But the remastered actor nailed the last line perfectly - "there is no (Perfect Pause), Withdrawal, from the garden"
Same actor, just new and better equipment for the remaster. I agree though, the original read on "Consume the garden." with that little lift through the phrase. "consUme tHE GArden." that little 'hump' of higher tone, sells it better. And of course that perfect little 'shatner pause' before 'Withdrawl' is perfection.
I like the "If you have come to consume the garden, you will be removed at once." line of the original version better. But I prefer the "If you will not join - then die. There is no withdrawal from the garden." line of the newer version. Thank you for this great comparison. Many nice memories.
Oh hey it's you, a comment from that video. I'm impressed Mandalore puts these things together in a couple weeks. But I agree, both takes have their moments.
Its funny how my mind seemed to remember the original looking like the remastered version, haven't played the game in so long it was a shock to see what it actually used to look like.
The new voiceover is alright, except for the line "If you have come to consume the garden, you will be removed at once." That sneering tone and varied inflection of the original was sooo badass! The remastered version of it is just too monotone.
The old voice was far more foreboding, but I imagine updating the quality of the sounds and voiceovers necessitated a re-recording. So that's understandable. The new voice actor did a decent enough job, I think. It's fairly difficult to match the tempo and tone of someone else's speaking.
I feel both voice acting is similar, the problem is how it was projected. The first one sounded more like they were broadcasting out of a loudspeaker, so the imperfections in the sound actually helped make it sound more foreboding. The new one sounded like you were talking to a person instead of a heartless machine.... the better sound quality ironically making the new voice sound more... human and friendly (relatively speaking)
I prefer the original, the voice had more menace and a "slightly insane!" delivery. To me, it sounds like the same voice actor, but the filters and pitch have been 'tweaked'. Making the new version sound a bit too clean and a little too fast for my tastes. Visually I can't fault Homeworld's remaster, but the audio was a significant contributor to its cult status. If it runs in to trouble with the old community, it will be there.
Everything about the new version is better EXCEPT the line "if you have come to consume the garden, you will be removed, at once." The original flat out oozed pure intimidation and a total assurance of what the Kadeshi are capable of. The new version of just that one line is woefully second rate to the original.
yea, just yea.... I kind of liked that "it actually sound like its a radio" low bit rate... fair enough remaster EVERYTHING else but the old voice style was great... I do like Karens(Heidi) remastered/rerecorded stuff though
Liked the original voices better. Also, some of the artillery sounds are better in the original. Not really happy about the weapons sounds from the strike fighters. I might change my mind after playing it awhile. Still, way better graphics. Also, can't wait to play multiplayer. I loved playing War of the Ring. Simple map, but extremely fun. Thank-you for the video. Makes me appreciate my purchase more, after seeing the side by side comparison. Thank-you to the guys who remastered it.
the old "ambassador" didn't have weapons, you can even see it in the original comparison ... I wonder how many of these little details were lost in the translation :)
Old voices sounds better, more spooky, more interesting. The Kadesh voice in old have bigger echo in the broadcasting and is more arrogant like: This is my playground, you poor stupid fool! I like it more than the new one. And the old voice of the Kushan ambassador is better to understand. The new one have ear cutting sound. Please GearBox, use the old voices, PLEASE!
it is good they provide both versions. I will always consider the 1st one as original :) Oh and the Gardens of Kadesh ambassador talks like Putin(with pauses i mean) :)
Kinda funny people are thinking it’s a different voice actor when it’s the same dude re-recording his lines for the remaster. I personally don’t mind the Remastered voice lines, they still carry the tone of the original, although there are a few details that get washed out because of not having that crispy static overlay from radiocoms. The Kadeshi warrior sounded genuinely fanatical and slightly unhinged in the original whereas in the remaster he sounds more calm and collected, but still sneering with contempt.
The diplomat corvette was unarmed in the original, a detail I really appreciated. A shame to see it paved over like so many other subtleties lost with remasters.
If you missed homeworld when it first came out then you missed a really really good game. My heart leaps with joy knowing that this old gem will not be forgotten.
Original is SOOO much better. Even outside of voices (Original>Remastered) old graphics made this scene much more dark and menacing. It had very strong feeling to it that was lost in remastered.
If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. Not that the new voice actor for the ambassador doesn't seem like a good actor, he does decent enough. It's just nowhere near the iconic, distinct sound we get from the original voice and those sorts of filters applied. I even prefer the old voice for the Kushan/Taidan ship as well. The voice overs of the original were executed so brilliantly there's no need to mess around with them. Just update the things in the game that actually needed updating and focus your resources on those things.
I know this comment is 6 years old, but the statement is still stupid. The audio files are broken - full of artifacts that the radio distortion effect can't hide. If you ignore major parts of the game unattended because of nostalgia you'll get a half-assed remaster.
@@thelovebat but it's too low quality to appeal to the general masses if they gave the game the original sound quality, and remember sound quality upscaling didn't exist back when they were making the remastered version
The original voice sounds very distinctive, almost like it is a foreign alien or a hive mind trying to imitate what an individual speaking would sound like, almost as if it is uncomfortable using actual words to speak instead of telepathically speaking amongst a greater whole.
While the graphics have been brought up to modern standards, the mechanics (at least in HW1) are a bastardization. No fuel, die rolls instead of bullet physics, tactics have been completely removed, formations simply don't work, corvettes behave like fighters, and getting units to do what you want them to do is an exercise in frustration. Gearbox proved once again that they should stop doing video games. Salvaging someone elses work and making it worse is not a Remaster.
I think the original qctor was better in saying "if you have come to consume the garden, you will be, removed, at once." But the remastered actor nailed the last line perfectly - "there is no (Perfect Pause), Withdrawal, from the garden"
It's not a new voice actor though, it's the same guy doing the voice. They just rerecorded the lines specifically for the remaster.
Same actor, just new and better equipment for the remaster.

yea the old one sounds just sounds way more intimidating and self assured at the fact he is fully capable of carrying out his threat
The old voice was far more foreboding, but I imagine updating the quality of the sounds and voiceovers necessitated a re-recording. So that's understandable. The new voice actor did a decent enough job, I think. It's fairly difficult to match the tempo and tone of someone else's speaking.
They used the same voice actor.
Even better. He was speaking in a lighter voice, so it was hard to tell.
I enjoyed the original voicework more, as well. Especially the fleet ambassador. The Garden voicework was fine, but fleet command was... lacking.
psilontech the fleet command voice was fine it's just the new communication distortion filter that messed it up, the old one is so iconic

+LUNATIC75 Also, it sounded as if the voice echoed throughout the area, giving that "surrounded" feeling
Love this scene so much! The kadesh sounds like a cat before jumping.

old voice was darker and less amateurish sounding. and the way the ribbons are frequently white instead the colorful ones in the originals.
Liked the original voices better. Also, some of the artillery sounds are better in the original. Not really happy about the weapons sounds from the strike fighters. I read somewhere that they were aware of this and would remove the guns for the final version. :)
Just Awesome....!! thank you for doing this :)
First voice >>>> second voice. The second is too human.
The detailed ships designs are very nice though.
all the races in homeworld except for the beast are human though, especially the kadeshi who are hiigarans themselves
No matter what people say, both versions gave us the "oh shit" feeling when he said "if you will not join, then die."
Old voices sounds better, more spooky, more interesting. The Kadesh voice in old have bigger echo in the broadcasting and is more arrogant like: This is my playground, you poor stupid fool! Quick pit stop at "The Garden" for 17 Multi-beams...
the old voice whas best :/
It's the same voice, idiot.
it is good they provide both versions. I will always consider the 1st one as original :)
Oh and the Gardens of Kadesh ambassador talks like Putin(with pauses i mean) :)
Feb 25.... Feb 25.... I hope they will find the original code for HW Cataclym so they can remake that one too!
The older one was much more threatening.
Kinda funny people are thinking it’s a different voice actor when it’s the same dude re-recording his lines for the remaster.

They seem to have replaced the maneuvering thrusters on both ships with lights...
just can't wait!!!
Can't waaaaaiiiiiiiitt........
Why does the new diplomatic corvette have weapons?
They will remove them in the final version, no worries.
Better safe than sorry! :-)
Speak softly and carry a big stick.
The big stick is in the background, building "salvage" corvettes.
It's called "aggressive diplomacy".
god damn it i want it now!
I cant wait... I will finally play HW 1 ! *-*
If you missed homeworld when it first came out then you missed a really really good game.
My heart leaps with joy knowing that this old gem will not be forgotten.
I know =/
I beat HW2 but when I got HW1... I just couldn't do it... Poor think aged really badly! T-T
Luan X That is a shame.
But hey! Hooray for second chances!
Original is SOOO much better.
Even outside of voices (Original>Remastered) old graphics made this scene much more dark and menacing. It had very
strong feeling to it that was lost in remastered.
They fucked up by deleting pauses. The new voice over is too fast.
The voice of Guardian of Cadesh was far better in the original. Voice of our guy is OK
old voice ++100 charisma
Original superior in all ways
wasnt there enough noise on the human voice in the original? some people will have troubble understanding that mush.
If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it.

@@petresko1041 It's not a stupid statement. The performances themselves were great, and that's what I cared about.

I spanked them on that mission.
What this comparison lacks is how bad they butchered the gameplay in the remastered version.
Hmm I prefer the original ribbon ship trails.
