Thank you Khan Academy! Your videos are really helping me in my Government class. Since I am a visual person, the videos give me a clear picture and better understanding.
There is also semi-closed primaries where a registered voter must vote in their own party while an independent is pick-a-party and semi-open where a voter may vote in either party but must only vote on one parties ballot.

Useful video but the argument about open vs closed primaries falls into some common traps based on misguided assumptions. There is an assumption that the base of a particular party will be more extreme than a "moderate" general public. Without getting into the semantics and reasons why that's a really misleading word I'll offer one piece of evidence that counteracts the assertion: Bernie Sanders polled better among none registers voters and republicans than the so called "moderate" Hillary Clinton. Clinton did better in closed primaries. What this says about where the extremism lies (in the current establishment or in the wider public at large) is an interesting question to pursue.
Nick Figgis I think most people are pretty moderate, but also sick and tired of establishment politics! They want change. Bernie Sanders was more revolutionary than Clinton. Also, Clinton was generally not a very liked candidate. Her “rallies” were not as enthusiastic as Sanders’s.! It’s quite interesting.
I wouldn't know which to choose I can see strengths and weaknesses in all the choices.

Even though citizen candidates have the right to contest the general election, the general election can be preponed to its new permanent date in September or early October. Then the runoff election can take place in the first Tuesday in November.
For presidential and statewide elections, the Top 4 would advance to the runoff election. For regional elections(federal and state elections), the Top 3 would advance to the runoff election. For local/municipal elections, the Top 2 would advance to the runoff elections.
The preceding is the best format! The runoff elections do not necessarily have to be automatic. It could be triggered if a candidate does not achieve the majority of the popular vote(if the electoral system is not used) or 2/3rds of the electoral votes.

This sounded a bit bias towards open primaries; there's a few more arguments for closed primaries.
This video is shallow in both its linear understanding of the political spectrum and its poor explanation of primaries. I expected better from Khan.
Partisan primaries suppress voter choice by excluding access to the candidates on the other partial ballot. What if a voter supports a Mayoral candidate on the Republican ballot and also a candidate for Senator on the Democratic ballot? Voters are forced to select a single party ballot, even if they support candidates of different parties in different races. Partial ballot access controlled by parties should be illegal in government-funded elections. Closed primaries are among the largest forms of voter suppression in the United States. In 75% of elections, the outcome is determined in that first round of voting-the primary. Once a candidate wins their party primary, which was limited to those who voted on that partial ballot, most do not face a real challenge in the general election. They win office without having to communicate with voters outside their own party base.
