Marine Evacuation System-SR III -Piraeus 2013

A marine evacuation system (MES) is a lifesaving device found on many modern passenger ships consisting of an inflatable slide or escape chute where passenger can evacuate straight into waiting life rafts.
MES's are common on high speed craft, where weight and evacuation times must be kept to a minimum, although many conventional ferries and cruise ships are now fitting MES's to complement or replace lifeboats.

They are not wearing a lifejacket while performing this task. It should be a must!

They should have named it "Marine Evacuation Slide System", then the acronym MESS would have been even more obvious. Imagine dozens of panicky passengers and crew members tumbling down that contraption arse over teacup. Here's something for the brochure: "All the fun of evacuating an airplane, now available on your next sea voyage!!!"

Cool show! Now try doing that offshore in a force ten with the majority of passengers over age 65. I think not. This is dangerous escape system passed by Solas to enable ships to carry more and more passengers without the need for proper lifeboats and trained crew. Disgrace, major catastrophe just waiting to happen.

And what is going to happen on a piss-poor day with howling wind, high swells and a severely listing, pitching ship? The kind of conditions when disasters are more likely to happen and when the crew are more interested in saving their own arses than those of the passengers.

40 seconds is quick enough as ships like that take a while to go down. Is the chute long enough to count for escaping a listed or listing boat?
