Apple Studio Display Major Scary Fail Caught On Camera $2500 Smoke Bomb Part 1

  • My Apple Studio Display has had a major catastrophic failure. It was only 18 months old. One Winter night while my Mac Studio was asleep my Studio Display started gushing smoke. Initially I didn't understand where the smoke was coming from. I grabbed my iPhone and started to record the smoke around my video edit suite. The smoke was coming from my Apple Studio Display. There was a major electrical fault going on inside. The smoke had a very strong electrical odor and I could see a yellow liquid dripping from under the Studio Display lower air vents. I was able to awaken the display as it was failing, more smoke was pouring from the bottom and top of the Studio Display. The whole event completely spooked me, very scary to witness because I had no Idea how it was going to end. Then there was a loud short circuit crack from the Studio Display and it was dead.
I have looked around online to see if anyone else has suffered a Studio Display failure like mine but I'm not seeing any. I do see some people who report having 'bricked' and 'return to Apple' Studio Displays. Many owners are having problems after a OS system upgrade or Studio Display firmware upgrade. 3 weeks prior to my Studio Display melting down I had the problem where the Studio Display wasn't waking up from sleep. The only reset method is via the mains power plug because the Studio Display doesn't have a on / off switch. Many people call this process the Studio Display 'reset'.
When I first started having problems with my Studio Display I did talk with staff at Apple Hornsby and they gave me some advice. Put it this was my problem was on the radar before it finally blew up.
There is a Part 2 to this Studio Display disaster. After Apple Staff assessed the damage and watched my videos of the Studio Display in meltdown they handed back to me the busted Studio Display. BUT WHY?
Honestly they need to investigate this failure. Their constant offer was a replacement Studio Display when I was seeking a refund. I have attempted for a second time to be refunded in store but again failed. I purchased this Studio Display through Apple yet their own stores can't see into my Mac Studio & Studio Display CTO order. I am told to chase the refund by an alternative process that chews up more of my time. Anyway because Apple Genius Bar handed back to me my broken Studio Display it let me have a much closer look into this incredible piece of Apple hardware. Honestly when it was working it was the most incredible Computer Display to work with.
The Apple Studio Display (marketed as Studio Display) is a 27-inch flat panel computer monitor developed and sold by Apple Inc. It was announced on March 8, 2022, alongside the Mac Studio desktop, and was released on March 18, 2022. It is Apple's consumer display, sitting below its Pro Display XDR intended for professional users.

That is electrolytic capacitors venting, there would only be so many go up at once if there was an over voltage situation. It’s likely a regulating device has failed short circuit and is providing too higher voltage to the capacitors. After all the capacitors fail you hear the bang which is the ripple from having no working capacitors to do the filtering of the ripple destroying the component that they are feeding.

Before making a comment please watch the whole video. This is a complicated and very awkward failure. I have looked around to see if anyone else has had a failure like this and as I type it's not appearing. I do read of some owners reporting an electrical smell and Studio Displays not 'waking up' from sleep. Please let me know if you have seen or heard of the problems I show in this video. I may just be the most unlucky consumer in the world. I'm still in a refund process, sadly it's not as easy as it should be. I have twice attempted to get a refund in a Apple store and yes this Studio Display was purchased directly from Apple. Genius Bar staff handed back to me my busted Studio Display when really it needed to be investigated. Maybe that says much about my Studio Display failure. Please keep comments focused on what I show and be respectful to the Apple Company.

Ok I will finish this video but I’m a learning electrical engineer and I can see the yellowish color of licking from the bottom is indeed capacitor juice and you want not want to touch it it’s irritating to the skin and can easily kill you if ingested and looking back at the video the smoke that was pouring out of the Mac Studio or whatever Mac that is um it is capacitors blowing up and if you want to open it up and see inside you can remove the ones that are leaking and dead and replace them if you want but make sure you discharge them with a small screwdriver or something made of metal just do not touch anything else that is not a capacitor!!!

My guess of the cause of failure is a voltage regulator has failed causing one of the low voltage railes to have a much high voltage on it then there should be. This is cause all of the electrolytic capacitors on that voltage raile to vent witch is the cause of the clouds of funny smelling smoke.

I looked into who made the power board in this display. It's a curious design because it has cut out areas for components and it's a split power supply. The ifixit website has a simple breakdown but they don't detail component level. There is a Korean website that details the power board. I've sent some pictures to a really prominent and popular American UA-camr who understand these devices down to logic board component level. He's huge on consumer affairs and rights. As it stands he's ignoring me. I am prepared to ship to him my Studio Display but time is running out. The refund stuff around has given me options.

Faulty capacitor. They vent before they explode. Very rare and the most that’ll happen is what happened to you due to the metal enclosure of this product. A plastic product may have melted or worse. Product is less than two years old. Australian products have a minimum of two years warranty through consumer law. Take it back and insist on a refund. Even though they do not have to provide a refund until they first provide you a replacement. Under most circumstances a refund is the last course of action after all others have been taken. In some circumstances a refund immediately is warranted. First thing you should’ve done is unplug it immediately. Check the voltage of your power points too just in case.

Hissing noises, lots of strong smelling fog - with a yellowish oily fluid? That's a capacitor going wild - that "electrolytic" stink will forever stick in your mind; that and the smell of a semiconductor burning up, thoough that one would be a lot fainter, but still very distinct. I'm guessing after that loud bang, you might have been able to get a whiff of that, but the capacitors would have burned the nose a bit...
My guess is that the ESR of these was a bit too high / capacitance on the lower side of tolerance. Over time they cooked inside, changing their characteristics for the worse: more series resistance, *and* even less capacitance.
That moment was what ultimately happens when a critical point is reached where the series resistance got high enough to become a heater - boiling the electrolyte.
I like how it just keeps going for a while after boiling dry, ultimately it looks like the voltage ripple on that output circuit got so bad either the feedback circuit failed in some way, most likely that there is a crowbar protection circuit that tripped...
My assessment: a panicked 'rip the cord out' moment would work to stop the monitor from popping - and may allow for repairs.
Though my real burning question is: why the hell does it decide to explode when asleep, with little-to-no power draw?

I've tried twice to get a refund within the Apple store, they can't see into my order even though I purchased from the Apple company. I'm pushed to do a refund via chasing up a phone number on the receipt. And some unknown person will come to my house to collect the busted Studio Display. I don't understand why this broken Studio Display wasn't kept by Apple. The vibe was always for me to accept a replacement. I think anyone can understand why I can't accept a replacement considering what I witnessed.

I've never seen any electronic do this before, I'll assume you've unplugged everything connected and isolated this. The thing that hurts most is the price of that monitor, I hope whatever data you have isn't affected and its safe. I use a laptop so I have to be more careful with data.

You always said that when it comes to the Dark Side, “The box is far more impressive than whats inside of it,” and that’s what I’m feeling right now about this. I think apple product just aren’t up to the task of existence in Australia. I know my parents have the old sealed monitor Apple Macintosh that you had before yours found a dusty grave. Not being the biggest computer buff, I’d say that it probably was a capacitor, as I’ve seen them release the magic smoke often, and most other electronics just blow up quickly, without sustained smoking. Apple is Very much aware of your order and when my parents had me have an apple phone (iPhone 6), Apple’s advice when the SIM card reader stopped working was pretty much just, “Welp, too bad… So would you like an IPhone 11, 12, or 12 mini?” I replied Samsung.

    • @nxx99
      @nxx99 15 днів тому +2

As a computer buff, I also think that it's a cap failure, but it went out rather unusually. The liquid is part of the capacitor and it controls charge. I have no clue on why it blew up like that, probably too much voltage.
