Yes to the sketching, please! It helps to see it from the start. Also, I have heard so many people swear by the Black Carbon ink and I don’t get it either. I have found the DeAtramentis Black Document Ink to be the most waterproof. Any ink in their line that says “Document,” is archival and waterproof. Thanks for the wonderful video.
Girl friend, yr a multi- media maven, no mishmash here... always a treat, like a box of chocolates, variety is a gift, art is its own spread, & like a couple of other artists, your buffet helps me override overwhelm every time.
Yes, I like the mishmash video. Being a word I use, it covers a lot of subjects in one lump.👍😊 Also listen to things over and over again, it’s like comfort food when you need it. The sketch work before paint is helpful, shows technique, plus it’s fun to watch. Appreciate the time you put into these videos.👍👍🎨🖌️👩🎨✨
Thank you so much for the kind words! I appreciate it and am so glad you enjoy my videos! And also thank you for recognizing the amount of work UA-cam takes! It's a huge amount to do this longer videos. Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Like most other commenters, I like to see the beginning sketch as well as the rest of the creative process. It's unlikely I'll be doing much 'inktoberish' stuff as the wife, our little doggy and I have been dealing with medical stuff all this year and (except for the four-legged patient, who has turned out to be in much better health than either of the two-legged patients!) they aren't fully resolved yet. However, I think it would be a great idea to open up any challenge to all mediums, as I know some people hate ink but love watercolour, coloured pencils, pastels etc - and having an open challenge could mean there was something to interest everybody. Success with 'waterproof' inks seems to vary from person to person (and paper to paper as well); I use Noodlers Bulletproof and sometimes it dries perfectly but at other times it takes forever. Of course here in Florida the humidity in summer is like painting underwater - everything takes forever to dry, whereas in winter drying time for paint and ink is much shorter. Thanks for the video - hope your recent health issue turns out to be nothing serious - take care and kind regards, Brian.
Oh no! I am so sorry to hear how hard it's been for you, your wife, and your little dog-go. I really really hope you all get through it soon and have lots of beautiful days ahead! And here's hoping next year is a better year!
Thanks for the nature footage. It’s so lovely seeing nature sights. Yes, thanks for including the sketching part…I find that very helpful! I hope your medical issues/tests turn out to be less than what you think and that you will feel better soon.

Hi Amy! I love owls 🦉and seeing your sketch and bringing it to life was fun and very nice with the music. The flamingo 🦩 is awesome! Thanks and wishing you a great day!

I agree, love my carbon black and it’s humid here so I give it no less than 30 minutes and go work on something else. In fact, I’ll do a bunch of sketches and watercolor paint them days later. Or, sometimes I’ll put down watercolor, let dry and sketch on top.

Great video love to see the sketching and the ink was wonderful to watch as well. Funny I’m on Vacation in Ontario and my daughters and I are in Niagara Falls and also around Lake Ontario but up on the Canadian side so pretty. I’ve been taking lots of reference photos as well. I hope you had a wonderful time on your trip! I've been in that area before and I bet you got some gorgeous references! Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate it!
I also really like the sketching stage, it is really awesome to watch. I am always sending you good vibes as well! While I watch your videos, I am painting myself, it's always a good time! Thanks for creating a creative space for us.
This is first time ive come across your show. Best of luck with your personal struggle. Im a fan 9f line and wash but im eager to follow whatever you choose. Best of luck!
Hi, I fill my fountain pens differently - I put the converter in its place in the pen and put the nib (and a bit of the section of the pen) in the ink to fill. I find this is less messy for me (the section and nib are quite easy to wipe) and in this method the nib writes immediately. And, I like seeing the sketching.
Do you feel like this causes the pen to start leaking over time though? I used to do it that way and was getting a lot of leaks where the nib met the body of the pen... Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate it!
Hi Amy. Another great video. Glad to see you and your family are out enjoying what is left of summer. 😊 I purchased the noodlers black ink a few months ago at an art supply shop and luckily the clerk warned me about how full they make the bottles. I've had pretty good luck with it. I have been wanting to order the carbon black everyone raves about but maybe i will wait. Lol. I hope everything goes well with your MRI. Take good care!😊
The differences between gouache and tempera are the binders. Arabic gum for gouache, egg yolk for tempera. Poster paint that I used in school has casein. They are very similar, but definitely not the same.
It's so nice to see that you've kicked that art block to the curb! As for the October challenge, just whatever it is that you want to do. You didn't list Creator's Choice in the poll. lol Oh, I have both those inks and have found them to be disappointing. I think with the Carbon black tho, it comes down to the paper. I've used it on unsized paper and it smeared after an hour. However, when I used it on Fluid HP 100% cotton, it didn't smear at the 5 minute mark, but it will smear if wet as soon as it dries. That being said, you might not even notice a smear depending on the color and transparency of the paint you are using. Funny thing is that I also have the Platinum sepia pigment ink that doesnt smear at all (once it dries) on both unsized sketch paper and 100% cotton. I was most disappointed in the Noodlers ink tho. I ended up using the bottle when I was doing some gouache / ink resist paintings and it worked very well on that. On to gouache . Some believe that all gouache is tempura, and I am not sure where that belief stemmed from. Scott Christian Sava is one who does. I don't know if you have watched his channel (he is incredibly awesome btw) and his background is in animation (including making his own movie Animal Crackers). I think there is a likelihood that he worked with some old Disney illustrators at some point who likely used gouache and it very well may have been all tempura back in the day. There is still some tempura gouache out there. I wish I could remember whose rep it was a while back that confirmed that their gouache was not tempura but it was either DS or WN I think. Oh and speaking of gouache, thanks for updating on how you liked the Caran d'ache. I've had my eyes on that for sometime but nobody has really talked about them after using them for a bit. They are now officially on my "Break the No-Buy" list. lol
I had another subscriber make the very good point that tempura and egg based paints dry shiny, whereas gouache dries velvety and matte which I hadn't thought of but they are right! So that was interesting! And I love Scott! I've watched him for years on Instagram! I didn't know he felt that way about gouache. That too was interesting! Thanks for watching!
I’m the same with aqua pens, wrong way every time! Even when I’m telling myself “other way”, habit takes over 😂 Love the flamingo, looking forward to that one.
The only Noodler’s Ink that I have that is totally waterproof is Lexington Grey. It’s a beautiful color but is lighter in color than black. I like it better than black but it’s style preference. But you have to make sure that you get document. For the sketching, my vote is to leave it in. I love to see it all. Thanks for the art chat!
I've been trying to get my hands on the DdAtramentis Urban grey for a while but it's been sold out forever! I haven't tried any of their inks yet. Hopefully soon!
I would love to diamond paint that little wonderful fox. I wish you would consider dedicating a painting just for a diamond painting. Love your channel.
I have had the same Moleskine for ages and am finally using it. I agree; I wouldn’t buy another, especially at the price they charge, but it works OK for gouache and acrylic. I also finally bought the Art Nuevo set for myself for a birthday gift. I like it but am not sure it adds significantly to what I already own. Love the fox!
Thanks again for sharing your artistic life! ❤ I will still be watching you even if you don’t do a challenge this year. Perhaps taking time to look after yourself is more important. Just a suggestion, as I tend to be messy while creating, I keep baby wipes near by to clean messy hands, give it a try…

@@winterwoodsstudio i would just buy dvd theres a 25th anniversary edition out at moment. I used to have it on dvd then recorded it when came on sky over christmas one year and lives rent free to be watched when ever i like . I love persuasion and sense and sensability and jane eyre bbc adaptions too. Theyre my favourite adaptions.
Yes I love the sketching I'm new to your channel I just started watching recently and I really enjoy art but I can't draw very well I try if I could ask? Did you go to school to be an artist or are you self-taught you're very good it doesn't matter I just would like to take some classes anyway I really enjoy your work. Thanks
Hey 😊 Italian/French/English fluent speaker here - "tempera" is the name for gouache in Italian, so that commenter may have been confused by that (maybe they are Italian?). In Italian gouache is "tempera", and the paint containing egg (which is called "tempera" in English) is called *egg* tempera in Italian ("tempera all'uovo"). English speakers have taken the French name for the non-egg-based paint, which is "gouache" in French, and use it to refer to what Italians still call (non-egg) "tempera". But the correct name in *English* is indeed gouache! So in a way, you are both correct (but in English you are the one who is in the right!)
when you said that someone left a comment (and before you explained the tempera thing) my first thought, as someone who grew up in French-speaking countries, was that they were going to be telling you off for your pronunciation and for a split second I was confused because you actually pronounce "gouache" pretty well for an English speaker (unlike 90% of UA-camrs)! I was outraged on your behalf, ahahaha
I also have an A4 Moleskine watercolour book that I've had for years because it was so expensive (even though I got it second hand!) *and* I need a new bottle of ink (second hand Sailor Fude and Lamy Safaris to fill) so will be watching with huge interest :-)
Man the art block is gone. Like the sketching. Do you use a reference photo for your animal,or do they come from your imagination. I guess after drawing many foxes and owls you could create them on your own. Live your videos. We need to get you to ten thousand viewers. You’re so authentic and our world needs more of that.
If I'm drawing something that I want to be really realistic I will use a reference (or several) if it's an illustration or a looser piece, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't but ypu are exactly right. Ypu need to draw a whole lot of something with a reference before you are able to draw one without. Hope that helps!
Lovely video ❤ Loved the water brushes! I did the same but with watercolors.. I used it with Mars Black and Serpentine Genuine and it’s so beautiful please give it a try..
I think paper has a lot to do with the properties of the ink. I only paint on 100%cotton paper and the platinum carbon ink is waterproof for me whereas the noodlers is not.
The red sketchbook I was using wax 100% cotton.... I think giving it 20 minutes to dry helped but that won't do me much good if I'm outside and plien air sketching.... I will have to figure something out!
I use India ink for permanent black ink , would it be too black for your desired colour? I don’t often switch up my ink when I know that one works so I wouldn’t have a clue on others x
I always use india ink with my dip pens but it's not safe for fountain pens. It ruins them unfortunately. Still on the hunt for a good fountain pen safe inm!
@@winterwoodsstudio I’m so glad you wrote back and told me this as I could have possibly ruined some of my fountain pens experimenting!! 😂 If I come across anyone recommending a permanent fountain pen ink in my UA-cam adventures , I’ll let you know ❤️
@@winterwoodsstudio ok I thought I’d pop back in here because I just watched ohn mar wins most recent video and in it she used a fountain pen with black ink , she used the brand Platinum - Carbon black ink. When I looked it up on Amazon people said it’s waterproof . Sorry if this has already been mentioned I just thought of you when I saw it ❤️
If you notice most of the sketch books are 25 percent cotton instead of 50 percent cotton paper, the thing is the prices on them are higher now?? Sucks. JK FLORIDA USA 🇺🇸. You sketch really good.
I loved Paintober last year. I don’t work in ink. I’d love to be able to use any medium

Oh pride and prejudice is my favourite book and movie. I really like the bbc adaption with colin firth. X
I have been trying to find somewhere to buy or rent the digital BBC version and I can't find it anywhere! I might have to break down and buy the dvd...

That's fascinating! Thank you for sharing! I will give him the benefit of the doubt and imagine in my mind that was exactly the case for him! 😀
I also have an A4 Moleskine watercolour book that I've had for years because it was so expensive (even though I got it second hand!) *and* I need a new bottle of ink (second hand Sailor Fude and Lamy Safaris to fill) so will be watching with huge interest :-)
That's awesome! Hope you have fun with your pens!
Pretty much pilot converters will make a nun swear! Lol
Oh good! It wasn't just me thrn!😅
@@winterwoodsstudio 🤣🫣🙂↔️
Lovely video ❤
Loved the water brushes! I did the same but with watercolors.. I used it with Mars Black and Serpentine Genuine and it’s so beautiful please give it a try..
Oooh! That sounds like a great idea! I will have to try it! Thanks for watching!
No way!! I use Carbon Ink ALL the time... no issues... are you sure it's the "PLATINUM" Carbon Ink???
Ink tower works gor me
Take your time and get rest and have self care days
Sorry if this has already been mentioned I just thought of you when I saw it ❤️
Please do what is less stressful for you. Take care of yourself, and your followers will adapt.
Yes leave the sketching please. To give ideas how to work.
In the beginning of your video, you said something about painting for your illustration class... do YOU have a class YOU teach?? 🙏
Not yet! It's one of the things I've wanted to do for a long time but haven't been able to because of too many commitments. Hopefully soon!
Does anyone here have experience of using the sketch ink by Rohrer und Klinger in a fountain pen? I have a bottle of it, an empty Lamy and cold feet 😣
I use the sketch ink. It’s waterproof and it doesn’t clog my pens. Easy to clean out too.
Yes! I love using those inks! 😊
If you notice most of the sketch books are 25 percent cotton instead of 50 percent cotton paper, the thing is the prices on them are higher now?? Sucks. JK FLORIDA USA 🇺🇸. You sketch really good.
Yeah. I feel like everything is like that these days. More money but les value.... Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate it!
I have a Lamy safari pen and I’ve bought two different Lamy inks and both are NOT water resistant…..so…..ugh…..
