I thought this was a great video. I learned he should not have this car. If you are not familiar with a CVT study up. Rent a car and drive it. Subaru also uses CVT. It works well.
As an Hyundai and Nissan owner, I would stick with Nissan. Hyundai is the worst vehicle I ever drove. this video would be more interesting if it got compared against CR-V or RAV4.
5:14 When I was test driving my 2017 Nissan Rogue one of the things that got my attention was the D-shaped steering wheel. I love the way it looked. Yeah, I know the Rogue isn't a sports car, but it is kind of cool to have some features that make it look sportier. I think the steering wheel sets it apart a little from all of the other similar crossovers out there. Just last week I put on some cool looking wheel covers on my car when I bought new tires. Yeah, they aren't alloy wheels, but here again, they look sporty and they were no where near as expensive as alloy wheels.
When I was test driving mine, the rear view mirror fell down & hit the salesperson in the leg... I don't think she wanted to let me test drive anything else after that... It's still a great vehicle, but that mirror issue still continues to this very day...😂
Looks like the car is carrying you around your neighborhood fairly quickly. And marking some quick turns and start stops. Like others have stated the Rogue is not meant to be a race car. I do agree totally with your comments about the control button placement.
I am a 2017 rogue SV owner with the premium option. It's basically equipped like your sl without leather and sunroof. I ABSOLUTELY agree with everyone of your dislikes except for one ......I will trade the D shape steering wheel gripe for road noise in the REAR seats. You do not notice it up front. But I ride in the backseat a good bit. And I cannot hear conversation in the front seats. It's terrible. I am also 6'3 with the Afro and I cannot find a good driving position unless I lower the front seat all the way down to get the legroom I need. Then I feel like I am sitting in a deep bathtub. I am just very thankful that it's not my car (wife's) and I don't have to drive it! My personal car is a golf sport wagon suits me perfectly
Yep know all about rear road noise in an open SUV vis a car with a sealed trunk area. Went to HD for $16 purchased a 6" roll of sticky window sealer has aluminum one side. Removed spare tire and cut this roll to fit and lined my tire well. Then between the top of tire and bottom of shelf about 2+ inches used a packing blanket. Most of the rear noise went away and this SV has a extra noise package Nissan could improve this for sure. .
I have a 2017.5 Rogue with 68,890 miles on it and have no problems with anything in the car. There is plenty of trunk space and interior space. The only thing I would agree with this review is the buttons on the bottom are awkwardly placed and it could use a little more power. Great car.
It’s so funny you mentioned the steering wheel being as you call it a “D” shape I personally absolutely love it, my husband hates it. Just got me a 2021 Rogue and I was happy to see the same wheel.
I owned a 2007 Sentra with a CVT and got 110k with no problems. I like this 2017 Rogue. So easy to drive. I find if you drive the vehicle normaly you will no problems. Its a basic small SUV. Its not a 75k lexus, just drive normally and it will do fine. Remember, these videos are one persons opinion.
For me, the D shaped steering wheel works because I’m short so i do have to sit up close and high which makes it difficult to get out of vehicles without readjusting the seat every time- which gets old fast lol.
I like the Rogue. It is an excellent reliable SUV, one of the best on gas in this segment, looks good and very spacious. However I have the same opinion about the engine hp. Nissan should rethink about the hp of the engine. It should be at least 180 to 185hp.
I have the same exact truck. If you want more power just press the "sport" button, Nobody seems to know this. Not only does it move faster it has a pretty sweet growl in the engine too. Try it. Also, I must say that the five things you hate are minimal and I bet you would easily find five things with another brand.
I have my 2017 with 68,000 miles. I love it. The interior is classy. Not a lot of useless high tech crap. Lots of buttons. I like the CVT. It is smooth and fuel efficient.
Who is this guy? I have an S with the Family Package and so far I have absolutely 0 complaints. It's not meant to be anything more then a reliable Family hauler that has adequate power and comfort. My only complaint is no Auto Lights like on other S Family Nissan products. Maybe a power seat would be nice too, tow rating could be 1500 pounds other than that it's great!
ShiftingLanes, you complained about the entire drive train. And looking at some of your other videos you didn't have any dislikes in this class that I saw!
alejandro fernandez it doesn't need a 6 cylinder. And if they were to offer it, no one would buy it. When Toyota had the V6 in the RAV4, only about 5-10% of the people bought it.
I don't see them doing that especially today were turbos are replacing all v6 engines but expect in the future for a turbo on this car with a smaller engine like a 1.4 1.6
I own a Rogue 2016 and 2019. He is right regarding the left side buttons. The D shape it takes time to get used to it. The car is not fast, but actually does the job. Compared to The 2016 CR-V we actually did a drag race and the difference was not by a lot. Also we drove 100miles in both the rogue consumed less than the CRV and the 2018 Rav 4. Last thing we tested was the comfort(really bad road) the Rogue came up best in comfort the CRV came 2nd and rav4 the suspension was really stiff. Even the owners of the other 2 agreed
It's obvious you're vested in another brand. Your dislikes are weak and impertinent to 95% of buyers. The CVT is the only major issue, everything else is preference.
Mostly agree with you, but he's right about the button cluster on the left. It's extremely awkward to use, and difficult to see while driving. Personally I think the CVT is fine, and it contributes to the vehicle's fuel efficiency.
We need to use the button cluster on the left before taking it for a spin otherwise its a hazard using it while driving ,taking your eyes off the road...
(June 2020 my 2018 Nissan Rogue I drove to learn the CVT.) (FIRST DAY 8 test runs economy setting in standard drive, I noticed around half throttle functioned more consistently) (SECOND DAY SURPRISE, I found the better foundation and better characteristics. That CVT functions much better in manual mode, it has 7 shift ranges and power curves are locked in shift range sturdy and consistent) (That CVT is basically Semi-Auto, don't use Full-Auto when passing or want more performance). (Questionable is over with me, I now know how to drive the 2018 Nissan Rogue)
2015 Rogue SL was our first and 2017 Rogue SL is our second and only thing I wish is like he said that the heated steering wheel switch is out of easy reach and when you lock the Rouge in 4WD it kicks out at 40km and you can not lock it back up above 40 KM. Wish they would change that to a higher speed. But ride, fuel economy and yes they need to up the power and torque but you can always go to the Morano. Love love these SUVs otherwise.
You may not LIKE the CVT but that doesn't mean it's bad. My preference is a manual because I like the driving experience. Conventional automatics more closely mimic a manual with defined gears but I understand how a steel belt rolling over 2 pulleys works. So. . .that is why I've kept my Versa Note for 7 years. Faultless for 7 years.
My wife just got a 2016 Rogue, and there are only a couple complaints in this video I agree with. The button cluster on the left hand side is bad. It's super awkward and it's not in your line of sight, and the recessed bottom row makes for terrible ergonomics. But the CVT is fine, and there's enough power. Fair enough if you think it could be more fun, but it's not fair to say it "makes no sense," when it makes perfect sense from the standpoint of efficiency and comfort, which is what the car was designed for. Although our Rogue doesn't have the D-shaped wheel, after seeing this video, I'm glad it doesn't. Tere's plenty of clearance between the wheel and my legs, so I have to agree it sounds pretty annoying and pointless.
I agree with all the comments! I have one and noticed the same issues! The D steering wheel was quite a surprise when driving. I didn't notice it when sitting in the car before the purchase! Cluster on the left - yup, you need to stop the vehicle before trying to change the settings!
I personally like the car. I just think when we buy a car the dealer should demonstrate and explain all the functions and tell you what they mean and how they benefit you. They shouldn’t just hand you the manual ad tell you to figure it out. When you learn how to drive a car they don’t tell you everything. They just tell you how to operate the car. They don’t tell about all of the functions.
Loved your 5 things you love about the Rogue, and respect your 5 things you hate about it. I can understand your complaints and dislikes, all except for the D shaped wheel. It may not be a sports car, so it may feel out of place for you, but ultimately it feels great in the hands, imo. Even my wife loves the D. ;) But, good work on your reviews, man. Keep it up! (However, I do think the CVT needs to be given more credit...it's so smooth, economical and they even added "shift points" when accelerating briskly to appease CVT-dislikers, but they're still getting hated on.)
Using "she loves the D" in a comment just makes us love you more Naldy. CVT is soooooooooooooo much better in other cars (see: Subaru, Honda) And thank you! Get that notification squad going!
I have the 2018 rogue SV. Have to agree with the button placement. Why the heck would you put the sport and eco mode buttons BELOW less used buttons like the gas cap unlock and the trunk release? There's no distinctive feature either, I've almost pressed those buttons a handful of times switching between eco and sport 🙄
Nissan Rogue CVT transmissions go out quickly. Mine went out just 750 miles shy of the 60000 warranty. Luckily it got replaced. I do agree with the buttons on the lefthand side being in a unusual place. My 2016 Rogue has quite a lot of power for it's size unlike what you say.
All Nissan 2.5 Liter engines are loud and rubber banded cause that engine has been around since mid 2000s when it was in the Nissan Altima. Now Nissan Juke and Nissan Maxima have better sounding CVTs plus much better get up go .
Not a super fan of CVT transmissions. They steal power. The Rogue uses the Jeffco CVT and there are problems with them. That said, I own a 2018 and love the car. It is a CUV, not a 4x4 and not a race car. It has enough power as a daily driver. Agree on the switch position. It is a good performer in snow and ice and is a comfortable ride for a short-wheelbase CUV.
The only thing i agree on is the shifter. Why put a semi manual option that only gives you the illusion of having gears. The car over all is awesome. I have a 2018 and i had a 2015 select. Both are awesome and i had no complaints. Going from a 5 speed manual to a cvt was a bit weird and it took some getting use to but i love the mpgs it gets. If u want a real sports car get 1.
Thinks buttons are hard to see. Solution hide them in a navigation menu. Flat bottom steering wheel is hard to turn but it’s used in race cars that I guess don’t turn. I am tired of car reviews complaining about CVT’s but praising great gas mileage. How do you think it’s achieved?
Bought mine brand new 2018 and I have put over 100k already I travel everywhere with it! From south Texas to wyoming to north Dekota and Philadelphia no problems yet lol

I feel the difference with the speed but again it's an suv . I love the comfort of the seats it dirtiest pretty good.
I don't like how the AWD works. I do not like when you put it on AWD lock, it shuts off above 15 miles per hour. I live around hills, to tackle a couple of them you need AWD and at least 30 mph. If you don't you won't make it. If you live in the hills save yourself trouble and buy a 4x4 Jeep or at least a true AWD car (all 4 tires, all the time)
The nissan rogue is a beautiful car. I own one right now at the moment and I love it! Nice video! Also, the sport option isn't necessary on a non-exit road. I really enjoy the Rogue, it's a sports van and it has a beautiful meaning to it. Goodbye!
You are full of crap. I have a 2017 Rogue SV, and had a 2015 Rogue SL - that was totaled in an accident. The car was extremely damaged and walked away without starch. You can trash this car all you want, but it is one of the safest on the road and I owe my life to it. That is why I got a 2017 to replace my 2015, and I like it more. As for the CVT I have never seen the issues you, or other reviewers find with it, with any of 4 Nissans. The CVT is a learning curve yes, but once you get used it you enjoy it a lot.
I was t-boned in mine and did a complete flip. I was sent to the hospital as a Level 1 trauma patient. They had to extricate me from my vehicle. The hospital discharged me the same day. They found nothing wrong with me. Go watch the video I took of my totaled vehicle. You will be amazed that I walked away. It saved my life, too. I also just bought a 2017 yesterday!
Last time in Fl. rented a new Rogue. Had ample power to get on X-way and keep out if harms way. CVT while not a big fan was totally acceptable. The Rogue is #1 Nissan selling vehicle. Can u say FX-35/Murano. I agree it's not a Track car
So I realize this video is 3 years old but I have a 2015 rogue and im pretty sure it's not a cvt and the steering wheel is round. So I think it depends on year. But the button layout is the same.
whew...I bought one before I saw this..and thought...okay lets see whats wrong with my new car... and tah dah... nothing, I get why things would be the things he doesn't like... (Not fond of some of those things either) but like he said...it is a good car! :)
I have owned 3 and I have had the same problem with all 3. Radio going out , seats squeaking constantly and some kind of boot around the steering shift squeeking when turning the wheel fast like a parking lot. All were brand new and warranty covered the issues. I have a 2020 now and I've had my seat replaced twice. Waiting to see if I will trade for a 2021. I but them because they are cheap transportation its not a race car. Just basic a to b
I love the D shape steering wheel..and i like the cvt ive prefer cvt than automatic..and this new revised cvt is smooth, very quiet for long trip..my only complain really need more power probably 220horse power it should be fine for this suv..thats about it..but other than that its a great car to own..
I have to agree with you on those left buttons, very bad placement.I happen to love the beefy "D" shaped steering wheel. You talk out of both sides of your mouth on this one. This is a small suv, I don't think you will be doing any wild driving where you need a full round steering wheel, but you say that "D" steering wheels are primarily for sporty cars where you are much more likely to need the full round wheel (1954 Corvette lol). The engine power is an adequate balance between go power and economy. I usually don't hesitate to pass, but I still get respectable fuel economy (65 mph=25mpg, 50-55 mph=31mpg). The cvt is not perfect, but it is how they achieve that balance. The manual shift mode is very useful to overcome the cat's week spot, hill climbing. Using the manual shift mode, you can keep the revs. where they belong while hill climbing. In both of your reviews, good and bad, you missed theist feature. The only time the key needs to come out of your pocket is for remote start. Push the button on the door handle to unlock and to lock, push button start, push button or kick hatch open and close. Oh, and that remote start, knows to turn the heat or air conditioning on for you, depending on the weather, not how you left the controls.
Also love the D steering wheel no longer hitting my belt cell holster as I get out and lots of clearance room as you enter and exit the SUV unlike a round SW.
For the price point, the vehicles intended purpose I think it is a very good car. I love the way he talks to the camera like he's talking to NIssan LOL!! "Hey Nissan, have your people call my people and I'll fix all your problems!" Funny... BTW, my opinion, hate is such a negative word..I would've said "5 Things I don't love"
Thank you. I feel much better that I wasn't the only one who hated all of these issues, specially the transmission. It feels like it is always runming in lower gears with lots of vibration in the car
I get that they trying to cut cost but i think a 4 cylinder should be limited to sedan cars some of them mid size suvs are to big for 4 cylinder transmission
Needs a manual option, turbo, fewer gee-gaws. Touch-screen controls are universally counterintuitive and require eyes off the road attention to do things that a knob or a rocker switch could do easily.
I think you're over exaggerating. The way you riding and you're not bouncing around. Any controls placed on a vehicle will distract you from the road. Overall, it's a good bang for the buck.

I thought this was a great video. I learned he should not have this car. If you are not familiar with a CVT study up. Rent a car and drive it. Subaru also uses CVT. It works well.
I don't have any problem with the CVT, I preferred better mpg than power! The Steering wheel is my favorite thing in the car!
I llove my 2016 RogueSLAWD. And the CVT, the more I drive it the more I like it
@KSTopNotch I’m wondering too! I’m checking one out tomorrow! A 2015 one
Hi there, i am thinking of buying one same year next week, do recommend it? 😊@NatElitze
When I was little I always dreamed of having a Dodge Journey but since the new rogue came out I'm starting to get into Nissans
But the rouge gets the best gas mileage out of all of them. True on the stick though.
Beau Carpenter what about the old ones
As an Hyundai and Nissan owner, I would stick with Nissan. Hyundai is the worst vehicle I ever drove. this video would be more interesting if it got compared against CR-V or RAV4.
We have a Tuscon vs. CRV coming soon! Also, check out our comparison of the Rogue vs. Tuscon right here --> ua-cam.com/video/7XtGCAkSGIc/v-deo.html
I'll buy it. This car looks amazing.
Most of the rear noise went away and this SV has a extra noise package Nissan could improve this for sure. .
Man be grateful you have a car 🙏
I have a 2017.5 Rogue with 68,890 miles on it and have no problems with anything in the car. There is plenty of trunk space and interior space. The only thing I would agree with this review is the buttons on the bottom are awkwardly placed and it could use a little more power. Great car.
It’s so funny you mentioned the steering wheel being as you call it a “D” shape I personally absolutely love it, my husband hates it. Just got me a 2021 Rogue and I was happy to see the same wheel.
The D steering wheel was actually one of the reasons I bought my 2017 Rogue AWD used in 2020. I thought it was kind of cool looking.
I bought my rogue SL new 2017 never had an issue still got original tires and battery never let me down. Solid suv
For me, the D shaped steering wheel works because I’m short so i do have to sit up close and high which makes it difficult to get out of vehicles without readjusting the seat every time- which gets old fast lol.
You can always adjust the rake and/or reach of the steering wheel instead of the seat. The release lever is underneath.
I like the Rogue. It is an excellent reliable SUV, one of the best on gas in this segment, looks good and very spacious. However I have the same opinion about the engine hp. Nissan should rethink about the hp of the engine. It should be at least 180 to 185hp.
I have a 2016 it's has more pros than cons. The cvt trans will never go away that will be the standard for all cars
I got the Hyundai. It's terrible. I regret not buying the Nissan, you're right.. it's a good CUV.. -.-
I have the same exact truck. If you want more power just press the "sport" button, Nobody seems to know this. Not only does it move faster it has a pretty sweet growl in the engine too. Try it. Also, I must say that the five things you hate are minimal and I bet you would easily find five things with another brand.
Over a year w/my 2017 Rogue and I am very happy with it _ No issues whatsoever
How about an update Jose? Still got it and love it?
@@Ghost-jy9hk yup
@@3rdJose does all the haters complaining about transmission issues worry you or nah?
@@Ghost-jy9hk no issues whats so ever on mine or my girls. Super easy cars to work on too, changin oil etc
@@3rdJose that sold me. Gonna get one for my girl in a couple months :-)
You should really watch our other Rogue video. ua-cam.com/video/HiSb8okixZo/v-deo.html
ShiftingLanes, you complained about the entire drive train. And looking at some of your other videos you didn't have any dislikes in this class that I saw!
RAV4 dislike video is coming next week! We're doing about 1 video a week right now so stay tuned.
Says 0 complaints... goes on to list 3
Already had my 2017 auto seat replaced ! So in the future better off , and manual seat is faster !
No matter what you say about Nissan Rogue I just love my truck 2015 SL!!!
i rented the rogue for a week and i love it . just one thing i wish they would change . thats the 4 cylinder . a 6 cylinder would be much better
alejandro fernandez it doesn't need a 6 cylinder. And if they were to offer it, no one would buy it. When Toyota had the V6 in the RAV4, only about 5-10% of the people bought it.
I couldn't agree more....I own a 2016....
I don't see them doing that especially today were turbos are replacing all v6 engines but expect in the future for a turbo on this car with a smaller engine like a 1.4 1.6
100% agree. Had car 1 year...every time I got into the suv I got depressed.
I have drove many brand suvs and if you compare, its not that great.
So what makes CVT so different? I’m looking into buying this car actually, but I’m confused with what CVT actually does?
Performance indicator, manual mode 3rd & 4th power curve range, 35 mph to 60 mph scooted very well.
Manual mode 4th & 5th power curve range up-to 75-80 mph not bad.
CVT 7 th power curve range (2,500 RPMs 95 MPH) was surprising sturdy HWY cruising foundation.
I agree with all the comments! I have one and noticed the same issues! The D steering wheel was quite a surprise when driving. I didn't notice it when sitting in the car before the purchase! Cluster on the left - yup, you need to stop the vehicle before trying to change the settings!
People like the flat bottom steering wheel.
CVT is soooooooooooooo much better in other cars (see: Subaru, Honda)
And thank you! Get that notification squad going!
ShiftingLanes Haha! Glad you enjoyed that. 😉
Naldy Diaz I love my 2017 LS Rogue
Naldy Diaz ib
Naldy Diaz D shape isn't good if you steer around with one hand
Nissan isn’t the only automaker using a CVT system…Toyota and Honda Subaru and the rest of the
I have the 2018 rogue SV.
How do you know if your Cvt transmissions going out
I actually love the CVT why would I want a fast sporty SUV, I bought a rogue that is a big and efficient on gas. Win, win
The reason for the flat bottom steering wheel is for easy entering the car
All Nissan 2.5 Liter engines are loud and rubber banded cause that engine has been around since mid 2000s when it was in the Nissan Altima. Now Nissan Juke and Nissan Maxima have better sounding CVTs plus much better get up go .
If you wanted “Speed” you should’ve gotten a performance suv you should’ve purchased the Dodge Durango Srt not the Nissan Rogue
The durango sounds beautiful with the hemi but gas is too expensive and repairs are not cheap.
My only complaint. CVT. Wife liked the color and that was it. One thing I like is great gas mileage. I really miss my 62 red Impala ragtop.
Love my rouge You just need to have it longer in order to appreciate it
Thinks buttons are hard to see.
I have this exact same rogue. Same seats even.. in sport mode its pretty fast! Maybe yours was out?
Based on your review, I could do a review as well, and do it better.
You’re wrong best car I ever had everything is wonderful in this I’m a mechanic if you maintain change trans oil motor oil I already have200.000 miles 2017 and runs like new he doesn’t know nothing about cars
CVT is prone to breakage big time.
just bought a 2017 nissan rouge SL Awd love it. love cruising in it and love the panoramic sunroof. I love everything about. I'm aware of CVT transmission just got rid of the 2013 nissan Altima sv. I feel the difference with the speed but again it's an suv . I love the comfort of the seats it dirtiest pretty good.
Any transaction issues yet?
I don't like how the AWD works. I do not like when you put it on AWD lock, it shuts off above 15 miles per hour. I live around hills, to tackle a couple of them you need AWD and at least 30 mph. If you don't you won't make it. If you live in the hills save yourself trouble and buy a 4x4 Jeep or at least a true AWD car (all 4 tires, all the time)
I have a 2020 rogue it’s a nice car love sport mode

Same here husband totaled 15 no scratches ! Got 17 !
Same here. I totalled my 2012 Nissan Altima and walked away without a scratch.
@melindasmith3713 any mechanical issues so far?
Last time in Fl. rented a new Rogue. Had ample power to get on X-way and keep out if harms way. CVT while not a big fan was totally acceptable. The Rogue is #1 Nissan selling vehicle. Can u say FX-35/Murano. I agree it's not a Track car
So I realize this video is 3 years old but I have a 2015 rogue and im pretty sure it's not a cvt and the steering wheel is round. So I think it depends on year. But the button layout is the same.
Question, I’m looking at a 2015 Nissan Rogue SV tomorrow. How is yours holding up? Do you like it?
whew...I bought one before I saw this..and thought...okay lets see whats wrong with my new car... and tah dah... nothing, I get why things would be the things he doesn't like...
Thank you for taking the time to create, edit and post this video but you should rename this video, "5 things I hate about the CVT"
So... You don't have to take your eyes off the road for things on the right side of the steering wheel? That's an odd thing to say
Worthless nitpicking.
Dude you bitsh to much! Ever time you say you hate it you turn around and like it
complain, complain, complain, sure gets old for all the nit picks reviewers do.

All cars have good and bad.
Finally someone agrees about how i dont like the steerling wheel
I get that they trying to cut cost but i think a 4 cylinder should be limited to sedan cars some of them mid size suvs are to big for 4 cylinder transmission
@@EpicDrew15 meant to say 4 cylinder engine and its a strain on the type of transmission
That CVT makes a great boat anchor.
Needs a manual option, turbo, fewer gee-gaws. Touch-screen controls are universally counterintuitive and require eyes off the road attention to do things that a knob or a rocker switch could do easily.
Sounds like you actually love this SUV. lol
I think you're over exaggerating. The way you riding and you're not bouncing around. Any controls placed on a vehicle will distract you from the road. Overall, it's a good bang for the buck.
The camera system is AMAZING
I love vehicles that have the button on the left side of the steering wheel............. am I the only one?
My wife has one I’m low key jealous because I have a jeep and the speed is pretty good if your not a speedster
I agree about the power and the left side controls
Shouldn’t most of the buttons on the left be decisions you make before you start driving around?
D steering wheel so it won't burn ya belly
