I'm here by way of Smarthistory and another "most interesting UA-cam channels" search rabbit-hole. This is my first video of yours and it's great. Thank you for this comprehensive and interesting portrait. I look forward to seeing more. :)
I've been subscribed to your channel for less than an hour but your content is quickly becoming some of my favourite on UA-cam! I don't know if you've received a request for Carel Fabritius before, but an episode about him would be great. Sadly there's so much obscurity about him and he didn't live very long but I think you could make a great video about him and his art!
Wow thank you so much! A video about Fabritius is a good shout, especially since his Goldfinch became so popular. I’ll add him to the list :) Thanks for watching!!
It's not even about realism or technique. There's a special quality of life in the minutae of his paintings, his joy and inspiration shine through and are arresting
The master of light, indeed. He had such crazy skill. It's so hard to give the impression of illumination in artwork. You have to plan for it from the very beginning, but finish it last. It takes a great vision to pull it off so expertly.
fascinating. I remember Cocteau speculating that Vermeer used mirrors I think way back in the 1930s while at the same time, or course, revering his talent. I think sometimes some people would like to think that creating compositions and all they contain, and then executing them with brilliance and deep understandings of colors and light it easy if you use a mirror. I remembering seeing Vermeers in person when I lived in Amsterdam. amazing. Thank you for another great class!
ive literally been asking for this. art history should have its own place on youtube. hope u will look at african art as well cause i never get to see sumthing like this with it. keep up the great work
First time watching one of your videos. Wow, your voice is so soothing. Like, I want exactly your voice to announce to me arrivals/departures whilst laying over at an airport at 9 pm as I melancholically swirl my whiskey in my hand.
good channel! since u might actually read it: i would love videos on die brucke, blaue reiter and the favues. maybe looking at collectives and movements could be an interesting approach for some videos? you probably considered it before. ive also been in love with kees van dongen lately, but we have a complicated relationship. all the best. looking forward to slowly moving through all your videos
Thank you so much! Jimmy does love to work it for the camera 😻 And absolutely, we’ll make videos about both Carrington and Varo soon. Two of my favorites as well!
I think "The Glass of Wine" may now be my favorite Vermeer. It's funny, technical, and the open window is stunning. But, yeah, it's mostly the glass fully in the woman's face, and that the glass is green. Nice video. Ah, the kitty, when he or she comes into focus with the depth of field.
That’s a super useful request! Since ‘Know the Artist’ is our bread and butter, it’d be great to contextualize where each artist sits on the art history timeline and in relation to one another. Rather than a long video, we’re thinking we’ll create a series of art movement playlists organized chronologically, and each playlist will have a little introductory explanation with dates, key artists, etc.
Know the artist, Johannes Vermeer's name, In the halls of art, his legacy aflame. A master of light, in the Dutch Golden Age, His paintings enrapture, on history's stage. Born in Delft, in sixteen thirty-two, Vermeer's brush brought scenes to life anew. With meticulous detail, he crafted each scene, In colors vibrant, like dreams in between. His subjects, ordinary, yet imbued with grace, Captured in moments, frozen in space. From 'The Milkmaid' pouring, to 'The Girl with a Pearl Earring' serene, Vermeer's paintings enchant, like a vivid dream. In shadows and light, his genius does shine, In the glint of an eye, or a glass of wine. Each stroke of his brush, a testament rare, To the beauty of life, in its simplest affair. So let us know the artist, Johannes Vermeer's name, And marvel at the legacy, he left in his frame. For in his paintings, we find a timeless delight, A glimpse into beauty, forever bright.
Thank you Rachel for giving us such a valuable insight to 'Vermeer's world'. Will it be feasible to do a session on Ivan Shishkin; esp. the creation, "Morning in a Pine forest"
I recently purchased a beautifully antique framed restored print of Girl with The Pearl Earing which led me to researching Johannes Vermeer .Great video, excellently presented, and just wondering is the a Know The Artist : Salvador Dali ? - I just love his theatre-museum in Figueres. :) Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam is was a pleasure to experience.
Awesome! So glad you enjoyed the video :) No Dali feature just yet (we’ll get around to him!), though his work shows up throughout our new video about the Surrealist painter Remedios Varo who attended the same art school as him at around the same time.
Already done! Well, one of the Pre-Raphaelites anyway. But we talk quite a bit about the Brotherhood by way of Dante Gabriel Rossetti in this video: ua-cam.com/video/TR0Lth2n4bc/v-deo.html
I love this channel so much, how am I just finding out about you guys? Also I think girl with pearl earring was also stolen, I heard it was by some dude named Redd, he sold it to a dude in a deserted island
Another great video. I do love a bit of Vermeer, though I agree probably his most well known work - though beautiful, doesn't really represent him at his best.
Thank you! My thoughts exactly, I’m most blown away by those Delft scenes ✨ Though I admit the couple of times I was able to see Girl with a Pearl Earring in person I was totally entranced. Thanks for watching!
9:55 I highly disagree that Tim's Vermeer doesn't have the "soul" or "finesse" of the original. if you look at the stitching in the carpet or anywhere else in Tim's painting, the finesse is obvious and he basically goes above and beyond Vermeer's attention to detail.
😂 Officer and laughing girl works BECAUSE the proportions are NOTICEABLY off.... part of the sublimity is the juxtaposition of a surreal kind of near-realism and the artful, I believe intentional, distortions of space and perspective. It's supposed to feel real as opposed to look real. It's proto impressionist and he's clearly the first modern painter
This is one of those super underrated youtube channels that needs a million more subs. Awesome video.
Thank you!!
Yes yes yes
it is soo true
It’s actually shocking
the intro, the music, the cat, the way you talk, the idea of the channel, everything in it is so interesting.
Thank you!!
@@TheArtTourist only the music is ... horrible :D Love your content, keep on doing!
Do not care for the cat.
Her way of speaking drives me nuts! So damned affected. Nevertheless I have to respect her writing. So, one hat off, if no thumb up.
goals.
I can't believe this channel has only 8k followers:/
amazing content.
This channel is so interesting and it always helps me unwind after long days at work 😊
Thank you! That’s so awesome to hear! :)
So happy I stumbled upon this gem of a channel. Thanks and more power to you guys!
Thank you for watching!
So interesting, thanks a lot 👌❤️👍
You have a great voice, and presentation skills, offcourse i love the subject of art as well.
Thank you!
Great paintings , great well informed painting history and information . And a cat . This channel has it all.
I love your point on why it would really matter if Vermeer used technology. If so, good for him, his work is amazing. As is your channel!

@@TheArtTourist My pleasure. ☺
Another great watch. The blend of information, visuals and detail you include is fantastic, thank you.
Thank you!!
Crystal-clear commentary to match Vermeer's superlative eloquence. Thank you. (Glad the Cat emerged to participate as a model assistant too!)
Thank you!! Yes we brought Jimmy out in full force for this one 😺

Love the pearl-like earings.
Super captivating! You deserve more!
I use your videos for our homeschool. It adds so much depth to our artist studies. My kids love your videos and cats. Thank you.

I watched Tim’s Vermeer today. Awesome documentary!!! Thanks 😊

This is great. The animated Vermeer is moving and freaking me out a little but great channel
Yeah sorry. The cartoon Vermeer came out a bit creepy in this one. 🤷🏻♀️
@@TheArtTourist I'm totally just messing around. I love your work, really appreciated this one and the Caravaggio one
Seriously tho... love the channel and your insight into the art and artist alike
Thank you so much!
excellent!
Thanks!
Wonderful
Very beautiful realistic art
Great content, I got to say I love those cat intros! Can you consider doing a video about Leona Carrington or Remedios Varo?
Thank you so much! Jimmy does love to work it for the camera 😻 And absolutely, we’ll make videos about both Carrington and Varo soon. Two of my favorites as well!
Great video as always !! Great wardrobe too, you could be a character in a Vermeer painting xD
Thank you! You’re one of the first to note my attempt to dress accordingly 🥲
his blinking eyes are a little disturbing... but this is an awesome video! looking forward to seeing others on your channel!

Watching this video from Delft, The Netherland!
👋
Vermeeer is great , master of light. :)
Totally! A well-earned nickname ✨

why does the audio sounds so off here. It's not that the voice doesn't match her face, but it has that overdubbed feel to it.
How about Degas for a "Know the Artist" spot, pretty please?
Of course! He’s high on our list of “Know the Artist” candidates. We’ll get around to him eventually. Thanks for watching!

Several Circles is Kandinsky abstract.
Definitely! He’s considered one of the pioneers of abstract expressionism
13:37
harsh sound
I never knew Vermeer was such a gangsta.. 🤣
If not for that silly cat.

well i suppose Hockney would like to expose Vermeer as a fraud, seeing his own talent (if you can call it that) is so miniscule
this girl makes me laugh: where he lived, worked, and eventually died. got news for you: we all eventually .........die
You’re kidding!
