every now and then a video from you gets shown on the front page for me and it's like seeing an old friend after a long time :)
The paint job is starting to look really nice.
The little C spanner is a More & Wright Micrometer adjusting spanner. So it belongs with your Micrometer & that bit is for adjusting the inner barrel to the zero position & also for adjusting the collar which takes up the slack on the threads. The other end is for the ratchet.
Yes indeed it is, but I have never used it for that purpose . . . .

Another evening with an enjoyable few minutes with Mr. Appleton. Do you think letting the steam box cover dry facedown (supported on the corners and not on the red paint) would help cover the S better?
Maybe, but one coat would still not be enough .......
The small spanner looks like one for adjusting the zero on a micrometer
Yes that probably what it is, but it also adjusts Gland Nuts on small Stuart Number 10 engines.
Hi Keith, as you know I'm a newbie to steam. How do you know what thickness gaskets to use? would the squish band piston to barrel top / head clearance affect the engine performance.
It depends on the size of the engine, about 1.5mm is ok for most gaskets.
Steam engines are alot less fussy on tolerances! It's not called squish band, it's front or rear head space.
What happened to the ink pad method? I thought that was the cat's ass! A leather punch and arch punch set makes short work of it.
I try to vary the methods to make the videos interesting ..........
@ And you're quite suscessful at it! My hats off to you sir.
Thanks Jim }:-)))
Personal taste department: The cover with the "S" in it might look better if the "S" was red, and the depressed part was black, with the outside green. This is a VERY personal opinion, and might not be what the model people wanted. It would make the "S" stand out better (and possibly be more difficult to paint). Just a matter of taste. Discard at your leisure.
As you state at the beginning, it's all a matter of personal taste although this area in red is traditional on Stuart engines which have the "S" cast in the steam chest cover.
