  • This animation provides an overview of the locations, inputs, and outputs of the light reactions and the Calvin cycle. It highlights the connection between these two sets of chemical reactions and is appropriate for high school through college-level students.
    Photosynthesis is a chemical process that occurs in chloroplasts. This process consists of two sets of chemical reactions, the light reactions and the Calvin cycle. In the light reactions, light energy drives the formation of ATP and NADPH molecules. This process also results in the formation of oxygen gas, which is released into the atmosphere. The Calvin cycle uses the chemical energy in ATP and NADPH, plus carbon dioxide from the air, to make new organic molecules, such as sugars. Through this process, photosynthetic producers make new biomass that they can use to grow and reproduce.
