- The prospect of owning a Tesla fills many of us with excitement, but the price point can seem a little high when compared to a similar combustion engine car. Have you ever wondered what the real cost is to Tesla ownership? We were wondering if the claims to earn your money back had any substance, so we set out to explore all the costs involved in owning a Tesla when compared to a conventional car.

calculated over 5 years it's actually a lot cheaper to buy/lease and maintain a Tesla Model 3 than ANY other similarly sized car. The savings are mindblowing. And this being both the safest and most advanced car on the market.
True. The only cars Tesla still can't quite rival in terms of cost are probably cheaper Toyotas. I own such car and for economic and regional reasons can't switch to Tesla anytime soon. But once Elon actually make his deal with China and build Shanghai mega factory, or even the rumored Indonesian factory I hope someday I can finally own these sweet car. Go Elon
Lol, I got my VW Jetta 4 years ago for around $22K brand new (including taxes. I have not had to do any maintenance besides changing the oil (less than $100/year). But tell me more about how a $45000 plus tax Tesla Model 3 is supposed to be "a lot cheaper".
@@tinytownsoftware3837 he’s right I’ve done the math . The savings on gas make up for the high price tag on the Tesla especially if you have a long commute to work . A full recharge cost around $11 and that long range gets about 310 miles . And also with the performance boost makes this thing just as fast as a hell cat amazing .

I purchased my model 3 for 47k and received 6k in cash rebates. I drove the car 40k miles in the first year and it cost me a total of $240. I’ve had 0 maintenance cost so far. Put that I perspective my previous BMW cost me 2k in the year just in service. Let alone the $3800 I spent on fuel on 30k miles a year in that car. Purchasing a tesla is more economical than people think even at 47k.
If you want to save money, why are you buying a Tesla for $47K? If you want to save money, buy a used Corolla for $12K.

You skipped the most important aspect: depreciation
And insurance
@@RobbyBesch my insurance went down when I bought my model y
Depreciation happens less in a tesla as the car actually gets value with each update, ie: full self driving beta etc.
@@balneetsraon5478 Their examples didn't include the $10k Full self driving option. The other updates are usually fairly minor. There were a couple that increased acceleration and range. I don't think those lowered depreciation by much. Tesla do have good resale because electric motors last longer than ICE engines. There is still wear on the interior, suspension, electrical components, etc. The battery degradation will also vary depending on charging habits. There is also the issue of Tesla dropping the price of new models. This will obviously cause depreciation on the used cars since no one will pay near new prices when they can get a full warranty, pristine interior and exterior, and possibly better hardware, especially newer batteries with longer range.
@@ymcpa73 to minimize battery degradation, what do I do?
Look, I've never put a thumbs down button to videos (and this was the first), but the title was a bit of clickbait. After watching it, there are no real numbers there (but for an approximate fuel and yearly service cost), no numbers written on screen, etc.

I would have expected a way more in depth analysis.
I'm not an ICE lover, btw. I will be owning a Telsa Mod 3 by the end of the year. I love Tesla etc. But I can't really put a thumbs up on this very simple video.

Electric cars are cool until you have to start paying for re charging at the mall or when electric prices go up.... in a world where everybody wants to make money im sure the "free charge stations" will come to an end
Not to mention the sticker price. If you want to save money buy a used Corolla or something.
The insurance is almost double.
The b-roll in this video is utterly non-value-additive.
Most important and the most expensive maintenance item for a car is tires. Teslas eat through tires like Tic Tacs.
Several issues: 1) If EV sales increase beyond insignificant the subsidies will have to disappear. 2) Much of the expensive maintenance on a car are in the tires, , bearings, brakes with smaller ones being windshield wipers. All you are saving is the cost of oil changes & fuel. 3) Gasoline & diesel vehicles especially trucks have upwards of 40% - 50 % of their original value after 7 years. For most EVs the cost of the replacement batteries is higher than the residual value. Nissan Leaf is an example.
Good thing is Tesla battery don't degrade nearly as fast
It’s been 4 weeks since I ordered mine, still no vehicle assigned.
Haha
Where do u live
Which is quite normal for EV and ICE cars, even if you already paid up

Wow sorry. My friend bought a Kia for more than the price of a tesla. I cringed on the inside. What a waste.
Wish you'd covered ownership tax in the US. I've heard it can be pretty outrageous.
Every state is different.
The biggest expense is going through tires twice as quickly as a gas car. They didn't mention that cost.
Not to mention you pay $45K + tax for a car. If you want to save money, you don't spend close to $50K for a car. You buy a $12K Corolla.
i got a 2019 model x i love it
Did you really OMG

You didn't mention failing door handles, quality escapes, poor paint quality, uneven body gaps, uneven stitching , long wait for parts and if you get lucky power drive replacement..
In my area, superchargers are 28c/kWh. That means a Y in hot or cold weather will cost 8-12c/mile for fuel. A Toyota RAV4 Prime will cost 9c/mile in any weather. If you like to keep a car for 15 years, the Toyota maintenance and repairs will cost you $4 - 8,000, depending on the battery. A Y will cost $6,000/drive unit (you will probably need two in an AWD), $8 - 12,000 for a replacement battery, $3,000 for front control arm replacements, $2 - 4,000 for drive shafts, $1,200 for brakes, $1,000 for every replacement door handle, $1,800 for MCUs, $1,000 for each rear light unit when the condensation gets bad, on top of routine maintenance which is not as cheap as Tesla would have you believe. At 15 years, the Tesla will have no residual value because of the likely repair costs, while the Toyota will get 30% of its original cost.
When all them people trying to return their teslas once the newer ones come out… they’re gonna hit em with the… “we’re only giving you this much because we have to replace the old part with new parts” lol
I’m not sure about your residual estimate for a Tesla. Even though it’s not been 15 years, used teslas on the market have a really high asking price.
@@CaliRepublic77 You are looking at dealers' prices. A private sale will get 5% of the original cost after 8 years.
It doesn't matter how much it costs, if you can afford such a car, you can afford to maintain and operate it.
No, the right thing to say is, if you're able to buy twice or three times, then you can afford it.
You completely forgot the main reason why people actually buy Tesla for?? It's got autopilot, insane acceleration speed and updates over time.
You forgot that BMW also includes service for the first 3 years of ownership. So your numbers are incorrect when comparing to a BMW, but valid for other brands such as Benz, Audi, and Porsche.

Price point is not in the range of most Americans. They preach for us to stop using gas vehicles but make them to high.
None of us can buy it but still we are here !

A Model 3 with the $2,000 acceleration boost does 0-60 in about 3.6 seconds.. so comparing its efficiency to a POS Toyota Prius that goes 0-60 in nearly 10 seconds is a bit strange to me.. Any ICE engine that can do 0-60 in 3.6 will most likely get 16-19mpg on the highway
I just bought a nearly BMW X3 after looking at elec cars specifically Tesla and Polestar. My car is 3 months old and less than 3K miles and I saved nearly £9k over the list price and got a 3 year maint plan thrown in. Discounted the Model 3 due to just not having a big load space due to not being a hatchback. The model Y is now available but just too expensive, and to date have never been able to get a test drive or a look at a Polestar because I live in the West Country. I just gradually came to the conclusion that the UK isnt really ready for EV's yet. Also another thing that is not considered here is they is no tangible used market for decent EV's yet so you are forced to buy new. To my mind right now nice EV's are still over priced and pitched as premium models. I decided to wait a few years so I wouldnt be stung as an early adopter. I also think tech will improve greatly also. No mention of some of Tesla's iffy build quality and the fact that Tesla charging is no longer free across the board as far as I'm aware in the UK plus my insurance was almost 80% more than my BMW. Slick video with some convenient omissions for ownership in UK !
My average gas price is closer to $2.00 and I pay nothing every year for oil changes. I think my specific case makes it more favorable for my ICE vehicle
Obviously I still want a Tesla

To get from work to home and to the grocery store it will cost 75k .The millionaires I see drive a 10-15k car .
I completely agree with your assessment of the Tesla as a comparative cost savings vehicle along with "saving the planet" from green house gases! My challenge is the Honda clarity Fuel Cell. My lease costs are much lower than Tesla along with free fuel (Hydrogen) for the first $15,000 (US) worth of Hydrogen. By then my lease will be over (3 years and 60K miles) and with the tax credits and the California State Rebate I am money ahead along with milage deduction for business miles. The biggest advantage to Tesla is its cool and totally computer run and the updates are continually renewing the vehicle performance. Downside is repair and parts availability when you crash into the wall while sleeping behind the wheel or playing a game on your cell while in auto drive (YIKES).
Tesla is not saving the planet. The battery causes more pollution than gas.
One day I will own this car. mark my words..!!
the real cost is you dont feel the engine roar like other cars in that price range
But you save a lot on gas so hey
Have to agree with a number of the comments, you are speaking about number here and show very few. Also, not sure what the service costs are like in GB, but service costs on BMWs and others you noted are not as cheap as you state. Finally, an insurance comparison would have been relevant as well. What does it cost to insure a Tesla in the old sod? Typically here, unless you can get the Tesla sponsored insurance (not yet available across the USA) you are going to pay a premium for insurance. I'm still going to get one mind you, but you need to look at all the factors involved and so a true cost analysis.
#1 He compared the cost to a BMW330i. Not the "average" car here in America.
#2 He stated that the average cost per KWh is $0.11 but that is if you charge at home. Tesla super chargers cost $0.28 / KWh so the fuel savings he quoted are almost zero.
#3 I don't know too many people that spend $300 on maintenance / year for a new car. Oil changes are $50 and you need 3 per year at 10,000 miles.
I think electric cars are cost effective if you are planning to keep the car for > 5 years, drive a lot of miles and buy the cheapest version you can find. They will become more viable as the cost continues to drop.
if you live in the north where it’s cold forget it every thing is far and in the cold your range will be shorter and the battery will drain itself if you’re car isn’t plugged in or in a heated garage
Even though I could afford the model s performance I wouldn’t want it. I would want to hear the some engine noise going 0-60 in 2.3 that’s why I bought a used 911 turbo s
A more expensive, polluting car that requires constant expensive maintenance and will die long before a Tesla? You must REALLY like an exhaust note! I have come to love the slight whine as my nearly silent car leaves Porsches in the rear view mirror.
Tesla’s are ugly cars
Pro tip: Toyota or Honda is the way to go, they’ll never fuck you over.
TESLA charging stations charges for electricity (approx. $30 to fully charge a Tesla vs. $50 for a full tank of petrol). This wasn't taken into consideration.
You are right about it being excluded. On the other hand you are paying for electricity.
What is the source of the electricity to run these cars?
No way you will get 65mpg average from a diesel as an average in UK. I work for a large car manufacturer and change my car every 4 months and have had many different types of petrol and diesel engines sizes and models over the last few years. I would estimate 45mpg is more realistic especially with new regulations. Not sure where you got 65mpg from....
Spot on.
Average cost of insurance really blows out, but one have take account of no paying for gas and less maintenance
I saw a tesla at a repairshop once and overheard that its a one time use car lol.
I own a Model x 2017 with 40,000 Miles. Never been to a service center. The only maintenance were new tires. Gas cars are high maintenance
But can you ever take road trip
In developed countries, perhaps, it’s more economical. If they want to capture bigger market like here in Southeast Asia, prices should go down to as low as 30k USD for base models.
I literally remember nothing from this video and I finished it about 30 seconds ago.
Not sure if this is true but when you go to the supercharged Tesla and you want to get gas isn't it like 6 bucks?
I’m gonna buy the 25k Tesla for sure 👏🏾
Your Tesla payment - Your Tesla balance = Your Tesla Gas Savings.
What if something on it breaks? which it inevitably will
i mean he basically mentioned this by noting that there are very few moving parts in teslas. i’ve owned the specific tesla he mentioned (model 3 long range, but mine has full self drive so i paid an extra $10k, doesn’t matter lol just threw that in there) for about a year. nothing has ever “broken”. i know a couple tesla owners that would say the same and they’ve owned their teslas far longer than i have. you can save so much money with these, the purchase price was steep but it has been super cheap ever since, and not only is it affordable but it’s magical to drive.

I don't have time to watch, can you summarize what the real cost of owning a tesla is?
One battery change is $ 22,000. CA and HI electric cost on average .30 per kilowatt - 3 times the cost of electric in most states. PA is about .10 per kilowatt.
Batteries are covered for 8 years/120k. And even at 30 cents/kwh it is still much cheaper to fuel than gas.
How about the home charging? How much to put it in?
The long term cost rank second to initial cost. If we can’t break the 1st cost barrier discussing long term cost feels like weather talk.
Hey, could you do another video but focus on the leasing part (if you can, get any hidden costs). Love your vids.
What of reliability and build quality? Does the Tesla stack up against the BMW in these two areas?
Tesla to date can't make acceptable costing parts to maintain the car beyond its warranty period and not break the bank. That would be the true testament of a great car and great company, and Tesla the best car to own.
