I think Tom Ricketts would be a good owner for a team like the Cincinnati Reds or Pittsburgh Pirates. I understand Kap is friends with Tom but my god these are some creampuff questions. Really disappointing but predictable.
I hope you and Gordon talk about some of these answers from Jed and Tom in this podcast. Some of these answers Tom gave are very alarming especially about breaking even and just doing enough to make the playoffs
Mr. Ricketts is starting to sound like the tribune company now. “ let’s be competitive” no talk of winning the World Series! How will you ever gain fans !
You’re exactly right, Kap I’m not gonna watch no baseball this year. I’m protested against the Dodgers. They have a monopoly on the best players in baseball. I will never watch a baseball game. I’m done. MLB should step in. This is ridiculous. I only hope fans from other teams don’t support and watch the Dodgers when they come to their town
He's just like Reinsdorf, as long as there are people in the seats he is happy. Just like the Bulls, as long as they are close to competing it is good enough. I will say Jed is far better than AK and is willing to make more moves.
nice interview. There were lots of statements that went unchallenged like - he didnt spend on a closer in 23, he inherited the Sosa fued but took him years to sort it, howd they go over the threshold last year and it was tbeir choice to buy up the neighbourhood.
Tom wants to be the Dbacks so bad Kap basically asked him flat out if the goal was the WS & he said, no. The goal is to win the division or sneak in on a wild card. Dont think he realizes the Rangers WON that WS. & how'd they do that, Tom? On a hope that players outperform projections? Weak mindset imo Pay a Superstar. Do you not see what Sammy has done for this City? We dont care about wriglevile. We care about whats on the field sir
I enjoyed the interview, but he didn't say anything that I didn't expect. There was more discussion about Wrigleyville than about the team. There were no "we're going to do everything it takes to win" statements. I get the feeling that he's hoping to win the division but not spend like a Major Market team to get there. The Cubs were America's team when WGN broadcast the games nationwide. IMO, that loyalty and fanbase is dwindling.
This interview confirmed everything i've speculated. Tom & family invested DOUBLE the amount they expected to. Now they are, at least, reinvesting into payroll as much as they can under the luxury tax -- BUT -- the problem is they have roster problems & Marquee SN ratings & cash revenue problems they have been caused by their lack of spending. The fans wanted and paid for & team needed Schwarber, Harper and later Ohtani & Soto. We got nothing. Prices went up, wins & ratings went down, and seems the FO & Ownership are "hoping" it changes itself. Ask Arte Moreno how that's worked out over the last 10-15 years with his Angels.
I was really disappointed in how little pushback was given to Tom’s claims here. As I understood it, one of the major arguments for why money hasn’t been spent on the team is the investments in Wrigleyville. They are getting numerous tax incentives and Tom threw a fit when the city wouldn’t give him funds. Not to mention that the investments certainly haven’t stopped the family from donating over $10 million to Nebraska politics. These are important follow up questions because they tackle the veracity of Tom’s claims here. Someone needs to ask these tough questions if they claim to be a Chicago sports journalist. Love the podcast, but this episode was more or less a PR stunt for Tom.
This ain't Little League dude it costs money of which you have plenty of, I understand it's easy to spend other people's money but why did you buy the team if you're not going to win
Great analysis, thank you! I have a quick question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (mistake turkey blossom warfare blade until bachelor fall squeeze today flee guitar). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
If Tom simply let Jed go over the 1st lux tax level by 9-12 mil every other season and just under during the in between years, many fans would be much more understanding, bec it's a very reasonable request, and the team would win more games w that extra good bullpen arm.... BTW, 2 home playoff games is at least 10mil more revenue...
You shouldn't be scared to watch it, Kap was as tame as a kitten! He didn't call Rickets out, for a single thing! I understand him wanting to be respectful to Tom, but he could've been respectful and held Rickets accountable, at the same time. Kap sure had a lot to say about the Rickets on his Re-Kap shows, but Nothing when he had the chance!
Kap, we need a sit down with just you and Gordon stat to talk about how underwhelming this offseason continues to be. Player after player choosing the Dodgers over the Cubs and I just have to wonder if they're really trying to say the biggest number or appease fans with a fool's errand and "we tried, but hey, the Dodgers, what can I say?" It's time for everyone to get mad. Hope I'm proven wrong any second now.
Its pretty obvious there were restrictions on this interview. Lots of stuff left out. Tom is intelligent. But a businessman first. Based on this and their actions, they are never going to be all in on winning.
Unreal Kap wasn't harsher here. I get it he has to play ball to get Ricketts to sit down, but wow, he immediately was like screw you, pay 5 dollars for a coke
I respect Mr. Ricketts and Mr. Kaplan, but to not ask about the reasoning on the Bellinger trade is disappointing. We are under the belief that that money would and should be spent on impactful players. If not, it looks like a salary dump and the budget is more important than the product. (I understand both are important) Could you imagine Bellinger in the lineup with Tucker, Suzuki etc. the team would be better than where it is now, yet you haven’t replaced Bellinger’s production (not even close) not with any substantial offensive player at all. Hell, At this point sign Connor Joe or Mark Canha at least it’s someone….
Nobody asked him to put a billion into the neighborhood. He also tried to get taxpayer money and was told no, then financed it all anyway. His alligator tears for a billionaire is embarrassing
It's only an option IF you live within the Cubs viewing area in the greater Chicagoland & Illinois area. Outside of that, you're Blacked Out. I'm in Florida. I can subscribe to Marquee and watch their programming, but NOT Cubs games. I have to have MLBTV for that because you have to have an out-of-market package to do that. Yet... for years there was good 'ol WGN. 🙄
Thanks Kap. That was a very interesting interview and you handled it well. I was impressed with Ricketts and I do believe he cares about the team and fans.
That was an excellent interview. Good work. For those of us who spent much of our formative years at Wrigley Field, and watching the games on 'GN, the current telecast is a tremendous letdown. Jack, Harry, Chip and Len were terrific. Some of the best voices in the game. Two of them in the HOF. The radio side is well maintained w/ HOF'er Pat Hughes. But TV is horrible. Boog is a disaster. I am not the only one with this opinion. JD used to be terrific with Len Kasper but looks and sounds less than thrilled. What gives? Why not a better broadcast.
Kap, you had the chance to corner him and call his bluff. I’m surprised, I thought you could! Did t they try to buy a soccer club not too long ago??? Oh but they’re breaking even! Sorry Kap, you sold out!!
Seriously? The money goes "From you to me to them." You are a billionaire who gets big profits off us. You should be upgrading the neighborhood, increasing the payroll etc. Why do rich people always talk like they are doing us a favor? Your money comes from the customers and investors.
I love listening to you,Kap, but you failed us with this interview! I expected you to say the things that you've been saying about ownership! You know, the We're the Chicago freakin Cubs!! Really disappointed!
I'm angry with this entire interview! Kap, please don't ever talk about being "P*ssed," again! You had your shot to say the things to Tom, that you've been saying about ownership and the "We're the Chicago Freaking Cubs jazz! Tom Rickets, please, just sell the team! Your goal is, "To Not Be Bad!" That's Pathetic! Your goal should be to make it to the World Series, every year, and to win it!! I hope that people stay away from Wrigley, until this small market mindset Sh*t, Stops!
ricketts is all about winning the division, apparently will leave WS series business to other better teams as he continues keeping Chicago in the bottom feeder zone. Cubs not going anywhere with this type of owner mentality
Lol all of those petty rants about ownership after Cubs losses and this is how Kap decides to interview him. What a 😺.If you didn't want to be combative then you could've have at least said "pretty pretty please sign somebody"All the money the Ricketts gave to the maga campaign could've signed at least two relievers
And where did the Score radio postgame/call in show after Zack's wrap-up show go.... been gone for years and everyone had to wait until Grobber at midnight while the Score goes to National radio for the hour and a half when fans want to call in... what a joke that show went away about 4 years ago... is someone in the Cub organization trying to block post-game criticism when the irons are hot immediately after the game? .... bring back David Schuster to take calls from Score listeners after Zack's ( super commercial filled) wrap-up show is over and keep the fans interest alive nightly... what a short-sighted and stupid decision....
Seemed honest??? Hes a multi billionaire... he says they break even AND THATS BULLSHIT don't let these rich fucks make you think there anything but slimey
Great interview. Ricketts has been an absolutely incredible owner. Best by miles for this organization. I did find it very funny how Mcguffy's bite goes completely away when he has to face Ricketts. Because he's a clown otherwise.
You’re exactly right, Kap I’m not gonna watch no baseball this year. I’m protested against the Dodgers. They have a monopoly on the best players in baseball. I will never watch a baseball game. Kap gets more upset than anyone about this organization. So why didn't he hammer Ricketts about it. Unbelievable
The more the Cubs suck, the more Kap has to whine about.
Mr. Ricketts is starting to sound like the tribune company now. “ let’s be competitive” no talk of winning the World Series! How will you ever gain fans !
Started following Giants since I moved out here. From Chicago to Florida to NorCal. Cubs lost me.
@@OBYourThirstCubs have lost a lot of fans since they're no longer on WGN!

This was horrrrrrrible. So uninspiring… wow.
Pretty obvious that Tom does not believe that they need to build the strongest team.
He's just like Reinsdorf, as long as there are people in the seats he is happy. Just like the Bulls, as long as they are close to competing it is good enough. I will say Jed is far better than AK and is willing to make more moves.
So Build the Ballpark, But Not The Team 😮
Thats what he said about spending 🤦 😂😂😂
My take too
nice interview. There were lots of statements that went unchallenged like - he didnt spend on a closer in 23, he inherited the Sosa fued but took him years to sort it, howd they go over the threshold last year and it was tbeir choice to buy up the neighbourhood.

LMAO bullshit the $5 for a pepsi goes straight to the $20 million for a pitcher. Also lol at whining about how much a starting pitcher costs.
You just wanna be angry about something!!😂
Tom ricketts making lies look at him lies to this teeth 😬 he doesn't not care about winning

From us to him to players, bullshit. He's profiting plus the value increase of team. People that rich shouldn't exist
Every team has baseball ops cost, and yet the ones who want to win it all spend on and off the field, not to just stay competitive
You can't even win a weak division what are you talking about focusing on winning
Thanks REKAP for bringing on great podcast members.

As of this recording they sit at $182 mil.. 13th in payroll. They charge the most of any team. You never win. Every year?? Gimme a break bozo
Don’t feel bad for this guy, the top 1% combined is more rich than the bottom 90% combined.
