Long lost Aussie here, I hope Donny Sutherland earned respect. He was caught in the crossover between glam/rock and wave/punk, thee was a lot going on. I hope he was treated with respect by the bands, I think this video shows as much. With that out of the way, what n epic couple of bands to talk to, I dunno, just Saints and Triffids. This clip needs to be preserved.
I'd never heard (let alone seen the video for) this one. I loved this band. I don't think they ever made it to Canada, but I was lucky enough to see them in London in 84.
being australian i was lucky enough to see them a few times and they were always great. but you canadians have Leonard Cohen which just about trumps everything.
Nathan Parsons Yes, Cohen is certainly up there. Have you ever seen him in concert? Pretty amazing. You probably saw a lot of the Aussie bands who were in London in 84: The Bad Seeds, the Scientists, The Go-Betweens, among many more. Glad I was there, otherwise it's doubtful I would ever have even heard of some of them.
i'm going to see Leonard in sydney this weekend, but i also saw him a few years ago being supported by the Triffids, without Dave Mccomb of course but still.. there were a few great australian bands in the 80s, not so much these days.
Part of the video was shot on the corner of South Terrace and Collie Street, at a cafe called Ginos, which we used to frequent back in the early eighties. It was one of a small handful of cafes in Fremantle and authentically Italian.
Yes... _After Dark_ indeed. Interesting back-story to the show: the television network (Channel 7, in Sydney) gave the cast and crew free use of the TV studio late at night to film these episodes of After Dark. None of the crew got paid. The network wouldn't foot the bill for that, but they gave the crew free use of the facilities when they weren't needed in the wee small hours. The people who worked on the show all did this because they wanted to, not for profit (because there wasn't any) but solely for the love of music...
Donny overly concerned with work visa arrangements whilst touring the UK and Europe. Chris B chimes in with the Oirish accented "isn't patriality illegal by the way?" for the humour...

Absolutely. Two fabulous writers gone. 😔

You lucky duck! I never got to see them, they were before my time. A Canadian friend was telling me that Calenture received a local release there

Five icons in a sofa, playing some Lloyd Cole and the Commotions as an intermission. That's pretty brilliant.
I meant the SPANISH BLUE track. Fabulous. Always been a great TRIFFIDS fan. Undervalued band. One of the truly greats !
For sure.
david was so articulate
I wish Chris Bailey had had hos own tv show
Chris Bailey is hilarious!
Wee bit of whisky me thinks 😂😎
Chris Bailey channeling Oliver Reed.
Nice work i enjoyed it...
once I felt something ...but it was gone in a flash
On which album is this? Got all the TRIFFIDS albums on vinyl but this one is not either of 'em.. Like it very much
Think this might be After Dark.

Reality tv before it's time and extraordinarily politically incorrect.
Bands had to work so much harder in the 80s. Unless you toured OS, even to the ‘motherland’, you just wouldn’t be able to crack the world market.
I don't think the incredibly talented and sensitive Triffids wanted to be there. They were so unshow business.
Triffids far more subdued than Chris and Joe.
Yeah because Chris is wasted at 9am in the morning LOL
Chris Bailey had to dominate as the quieter Triffids wilted...
Donny overly concerned with work visa arrangements whilst touring the UK and Europe. Chris B chimes in with the Oirish accented "isn't patriality illegal by the way?" for the humour...
poor old Joe Camilleri waiting for his turn to speak that never arrived
